If like me you have been looking for a new 4K TV that doesn't completely break the bank and isn't too big then this could be very useful for you.

It was £799 a couple of days ago but it seems to have dropped to £749 at a number of retailers now including Richer Sounds if you can find it in stock.

I decided to post the John Lewis deal as it's a brand everyone knows and respects and the TV comes with a 5 year guarantee as standard.

This TV is 10-bit, HDR and comes with freeview and freesat tuners.

It's also highly rated on Which? and is one of their top TV picks for 2017 so far.

So I actually went and bought a Samsung UE49KS7000 as well to make a comparison between this IPS panel LG and the VA panel samsung. The Samsung does look fantastic and the contrast is definitely better with deeper blacks and overall nicer picture than the LG. The 2017 equivalent is the Samsung UE49MU7000 (although it's actually a worse TV overall than the 2016 model).

BUT

And this is a big but. I now finally understand why the make IPS TVs. The viewing angles on the Samsung are really quite bad whereas they seemed really quite good on the LG. If you sit straight on to the TV then the VA panel is hands down better but move side ways by a couple of metres and the picture starts to look washed out. If you're sitting on a couch to the side that's perpendicular to the TV you really aren't going to get the best view.

User reviews for this TV on John Lewis, Amazon, etc are great. Currently priced £699 at Richer Sounds. No doubt John Lewis will price match if prefer JL 5 yr warranty terms over RS 6.

Well I set it up today. Everything looks great. Just make sure you turn off auto dimming and motion flow. User interface is speedy, intuitive and we love the magic remote. For the average consumer this will be a fantastic TV. 4K content looks great. Really don't understand why people are saying the black levels and backlight are bad. The blacks are deep and the screen is lit incredibly evenly. Speakers are fine, not great by any means but I've never come across a flat screen TV with good audio. We use a soundbar anyway. I get the feeling a bunch of people have commented without ever seeing this TV in the flesh.

Can't agree with you sorry. Picture is mediocre and is shamed by samsung tv's 2 generations older. I spent half an hour teating each tv side by side in currys and wasn't impressed.
soulio to Bumnut53
17 Sep 17 #41
That's fine. I haven't compared mine to any others. I do find it hard to believe that Curry's would display a 2017 TV alongside one that is two generations old though.

I suspect this would be because LG uses a dreadful snowscape as its UHD showcase which, while nice looking, is mostly showing white and grey colours whereas Samsung has a fantastic reel that really shows off all the colours and highly detailed scenes. Pop that video on the LG and it would look just as good.

It's not so much the fact they use rgbw panels - they still offer greater detail than a 1080 set, it's the fact they advertise it as a 4k TV when it's 3k (to put it simply).

2016 models with VA or non rgbw IPS panels are also superior to the 2017 lines, they have better blacks, go brighter, have better response, more accurate colours. Other than 10 bit Vs 8bit FRC of my 850v these offer no improvements, and indeed are worse as they don't offer 3d yet cost more than the old models.

A bad time to be buying TVs nowadays unless you want oled and don't care about 3d. Would be interesting to see which other companies are now using LG panels other than their OLED lines. I'd stick with Sony, Samsung or hisense.

Every TV that claims HDR support right now is much farther away from being able to reproduce the full range of the HDR standards than this is from being able to reproduce the full detail of 4K.

sorry to tell you,

but 3D is DEAD
jaydeeuk1 to ws007
17 Sep 17 #43
Could you let Disney and paramount know that too? Seems they still have the impression 3d is alive and well judging by the 2017 and 2018 3d release schedule

3d is awesome on a decent 4k TV, much much better than anything a 1080 set could muster and makes a massive difference in experience. Try watching the Martian for example, breath taking in 3d.

3d will be back on consumer TVs in the next 5 years, probably using Toshiba's glasses free tech.

Been considering this one... But getting tempted to get the Sony 49xe9005 as that has local dimming. Much more costly though so this deal gets heat from me.

Regarding 5.1 via optical I'd be surprised if it didn't support this.

Would be good to hear from someone who has it. Mine is being delivered tomorrow. The Which? review says it's an excellent TV. This is the bottom line of their review:

"Should I buy it?

Yes. It may be a little pricier than your average set, but you get what you pay for. Whether this is your first smart TV or you're an AV enthusiast, you'll find this TV has everything you could ask for."

I owned the 49" inch model of this TV and to be honest I hated it. I don't understand the tech jargons like 10bit, Dolby, IPS and RBGW but this TV is overpriced for what you get. The screen brightness is too low. I was struggling to enjoy hardly anything I watched. Despite turning off all eco settings the screen was constantly adjusting itself which was annoying. The colours were average too. The sound is mediocre despite claiming to have an integrated sound bar. I'm glad I got rid of it.

I bought the LG 55SJ810V a couple of months ago (was £1169) and found it to not be up to standard for that price. It had bad DSE (Dirty Screen Effect) that could be seen on anything that moved left/right (football and games). Motion was poor. Really poor banding.

The real killer was the 'Local Dimming'. Having that turned on would create pillars of greyish light from top to bottom in certain scenes, even in scenes I wouldn't have expected- Man in the High Castle had scenes where the pillars would flash on and off on the left and right of the scenes. It was terrible and distracting. The only option was to turn it off, which left me with a screen that was greyish black and washed out.

I went from a 49 inch 1080p £500 TV that was acceptable, to a £1169 TV that I considered to be worse. Returned it and just took the plunge on OLED. Even at the new price for the 55inch (£899) I'd still feel ripped off.

I also wouldn't suggest this TV for anyone who likes to watch movies, or play games in the dark.
kingkash_786 to Dsync
16 Sep 17 #36
You're absolutely right I noticed the same thing but the reason for that is that these TV's are egde lit, meaning the light comes from the edges which is why we see bars of light whereas an OLED has individual foods which turn on and turn off which in turn means the black levels are the best and nothing looks washed out

To be honest I'm scared off by the RGBW comments. I'm just about to have a look at a couple of Sony TVs at richer sound for about the same money.
EndlessWaves to almo
14 Sep 17 #5
I wouldn't be. From what I've seen it's very much something people complain about in principle before they purchase, rather than something people find they dislike after they buy the TV.

Unless you want it for close work (e.g. PC use on a desktop) then it wouldn't bother me at all on a 49" TV.

This is an LCD not an OLED, the extra brightness steps are handled by the backlight.
triggersaunt to EndlessWaves
15 Sep 17 #22
Would you recommend this over an OLED? or is this a case of you get what you pay for? In which case is a very good tv for a good price. I am an average TV user and thinking if I should get this or an OLED?
kingkash_786 to triggersaunt
15 Sep 17 #35
No Way, and OLED TV is far superior than this TV, hence the price difference. If you have the money then definitely go for an OLED but as you say your an average user you better off with this as I could guess you won't be bothered by the difference in black levels of the TV's.

This is very tempting, been waiting for a true 10-bit screen around this size and price. Does anyone know if this model supports 5.1 Dolby/DTS optical passthrough?

remember this is a RGBW panel,

Seriously, what would be a superior TV for around the same price? I may return this before I open it up if I can get something else based on what everyone is saying.
EndlessWaves to soulio
15 Sep 17 #30
The main alternative would be one of the TVs with better contrast like a Panasonic EX700 or Samsung MU6500. How much that would benefit you would depend on how well lit the room was when you watched TV. This one is good for well lit rooms, but might be a bit underwhelming in a home cinema.

I don't understand why people are bothered about 10-bit panels in LCDs, if not as if the 10-bit content can be mapped to the LCD and tests show no difference in banding for current colour gamuts.

If you want good HDR then in the real world the local dimming performance seems to be the biggest influence.

The current OLED models may have positives and negatives relative similarly priced LCDs like an XE93 but compared to a cheaper TV like this they're outright better.

Whether they're a sufficient improvement to be worth double the price is the tricky question and rather a subjective one. It'll partly depend on the TV you're coming from, it's a lot easier to miss what you're used to than quality you've never seen.

Totally correct,

if you don`t compare this to a RBG panelled TV (even a 1080p one),

you`ll be fine,

obviously you can`t visit a TV shop, or any friend`s with a new TV,

unless of course they got screwed with a RGBW panel as well. :kissing_heart:

It's not true 10 bit. I rang LG with the question a few months back and the guy asked his manager to confirm who said only their oled range are true 10 bit.

At this size I think the only option for true 10 bit non oled are the Samsung Ks 8000 or 9000s (which have horrible uniformity issues) or the Sony 49Xe9005 with local dimming (which I own)... It's the best options at 49"....but is the priciest.

15 Sep 17 #14
Do some research - these tv's are cheaper for a reason... LG are cutting corners and obviously the picture will suffer. If you're ok with that, go for it, but you're not getting a great tv you're only getting a passable one.
