Anyone manage to get ads off without paying? I have tried asking nicely in chat etc

I did on my standard (non-paperwhite) Kindle, but I bought that through Amazon. Told them I wasn't bothered about the ads, but I asked on chat how to get rid of the "Swipe to unlock" option that still appears when you have a case, and they took them off then.

Do only Amazon sell the ad free version and how intrusive are the ads? (Also isn't this just a standard £10 off all orders over £75 code?)

Great devices...
Firstly, Ads are screensavers and at the bottom of the homescreen - if you get rid of them you get pictures of pencils etc as screensavers and the ads at the bottom of the homescreen disappear. There are no ads when you're reading a book etc and there are no differences to daily use apart from the swiping to unlock is replaced by just opening the official case if you have one. So, it comes down to the person if they find their presence intrusive or worrying... They can be very relevant (new books you might find interesting etc) or completely pointless (fancy a new shaver mrs crabby09?). They are very easily removed from the device for a tenner, or you can try and wrangle with customer services.
Secondly, the paperwhite is well worth it over the standard version - the light really can just make the page seem whiter, which is great in itself... But never needing a light source is awesome for night time readers who have violent other halves!!!
Finally... The day my paperwhite is retired will only come when they stick audible narration on a new device with audio output!

Yep - its a very good point. If you have an official case (or similar knockoff) with the magnetic opening, then you'd never see the adverts, cause they are only on the lock screen, and the lock screen is covered up when the case is closed, and automatically unlocks when you open the case, so you'd only see the ad for a microsecond if that. The wife's one is supposed to have ads, although never seen any before she bought the case. Now she has the case, who can tell!
Maybe get yourself a case rather than spend a tenner on the unlock (unless you can persuade amazon CS to unlock it for free)

That wasn't the case for mine, because you've still got the Swipe to unlock, when you open the case you see the advert. It's similar to pressing the button on the bottom of the device, then swiping. Without adverts, you don't see the pencil etc, agreed.

This was how mine worked... Open the case with adverts you had to swipe... Open the case without adverts it goes straight to book or home page.

Yup, I think we're in agreement, I'm just terrible at explaining!

Ah fair enough - I'm guessing the wife's one has never had the adverts enabled, so I never saw the swipe to unlock. Sorry for the confusion!

Do you reckon they might make a new one this November for 10 year anniversary?

I hope so... But was expecting to see a price drop on the current version before that and whilst this IS a good deal, it is one that has been available before. The day we see Amazon selling this generation for £69 or less is probably the day we can start counting down to a new paperwhite with new features. Audible just seems to make sense when the two service are so well integrated already.

On the ads - I've called Amazon before and requested the ads to be removed - they waived the £10 cost as I said I wouldn't have purchased if I knew about them.
