Just noticed, O2 have their prices for Like new iPhones.

The best deal I could find was for iPhone 7 32Gb Like new, Tariff £109 upfront and £35 plan for 5Gb. This brings the cost to £9*24 + £109 = £326

Using the usual O2 refresh trick, you can request the unlock for free, pay the remaining balance upfront and call to cancel the airtime before your 14 days return period is up.

I know a new iphone is coming soon, but at this price, iPhone 7 is still a good choice and you get a full 12 months warranty from O2.

refresh how to guide.

Even if the phone costs £326 on its own, that's a huge loss of £274 in only 1 year as the starting price was at least £600.

I got the last O2 refresh deal on the iPhone7 and was made to pay the one month rental. But overall, it was still a very good deal as I paid just over £300. The phone was practically new. It just didn't come in an original box.

13 Sep 17 #26
You definitely shouldn't be buying this then, since you are clearly a superior deal hunter... you've been on here for 5 years and never come across an O2 Refresh deal, this much I find suspicious. Hmmmmnn..

In all seriousness though, the phone and line rental are separate contracts, each with their own 24 month time period, but you are allowed to pay of the phone at anytime, so you can then cancel the airtime within the 14 day cooling off period, and also get your handset unlcoked for free.
peter1969uk to Uncommon.Sense
13 Sep 17 #41
Maybe its because I've never had a contract with O2, and find most phone deals not worth it since they started wanting a 24 month contract.

14 Sep 17 #51
It's probably because you're not reading the original deal posts & other people's replies to you - all of which clearly explain this type of deal (in this thread anyway). You seem to have missed my earlier reply to you as well.
Crossbow to peter1969uk

Let us give him the benefit of the doubt...

peter1969uk, this deal is £326 for the phone only & no more to pay. There's no contract involved, as you'll be cancelling it on receipt of the phone & after paying off the remainder of the device plan.

Is there a link on their website to show this?

I'm looking at the link and they still have £109.99 @ £35.00 per month. I just order the phone, ring the 202 and pay off the phone and they will tell me it's £217 one off to pay?

I've googled it and can't find anything to confirm this will 100% work so it worries me a bit....

You can only cancel the contract & pay off the remainder of the device plan via telephone/online chat I think - not instore. Also, I'd recommend not cancelling the DD - let them do it from their side. After it's all done, ask them to send you the following confirmation in writing via email:
- the device plan has been fully paid off,
- the contract has been cancelled,
- there is no further payment required &
- the DD has been cancelled by them

No.

Also keep a note of this:
"I confirm I want my service to start as soon as I receive my sim (you'll still have 14 days to cancel, you'll just pay for what you've used) "

So if you do not use that sim at all, and get the phone unlocked then cancel, they can't charge you for anything other than the device; £326.

14 Sep 17 #47
Please explain how you can get the phone unlocked - without having to put the sim in the phone - and activating it by making a call/text?

Without activating first - is is still possible to get the free unlock from O2?
ScotBoy to Libertas
14 Sep 17 #48
You have to put the sim in and get it registered on the network - dial your home number but just don't pick up.

Last time, I cancelled the contract before I got the phone unlocked - it was a right PITA to get it sorted. They need the phone on the network to unlock it.

So, Sim in, register on the network, call for an unlock (free with contracts). Once unlocked, pay off the device cost and cancel the contract (within your 14 days).

Used o2 refresh five times - everything done perfectly on my end with payment, cancellation , etc.

Went to apply for bank account to switch and got refused - found out because they put a default on my account the last time I used it over 8 months ago - absolutely no communication to state that was the case. I phoned them up they acnowledged that everything was done correctly at my end but they messed up their side. In addition they owe me £15!

I am in the process of removing the default - althougth their customer services continously lie that it is sorted - I only find out when the next credit report is produced. I am now looking at legal solutions to remedy the situation in terms of compensation - let me know if anyone else has taken that route?

When it works its great - when they mess up they screw up your credit score and life making decisions. I was lucky it was only to switch and not cruical - just be aware.

thats spooky the same (well similar) happened to me
a late payment mark of my credit file, which was and always has been excellent (and now has been restored to excellent)

Similar experience as this - twice(!) with iPhone 5 then 5S last summer. I now monitor my credit file like a hawk with these jokers (Noddle, MSE Credit Club, Clearscore - signed up free to all three as it covers all three agencies). It didn't stop me getting the SE recently though as I was prepared for them this time. It was eventually resolved with emailing Credit Referrals ([email protected]) and copying in Complaint Review ([email protected]) - the second time this happened they paid me £50 compensation.

Could be The last 'classic' iphone. The new one is hideous with that sensor insert. Its like the flat tyre display on circular smart watches. Poor design choice. Can see the 9 or the 10 having these sensors under the glass and a full display, i understand this is already acheivable.
ezzer72 to Regprentice
14 Sep 17 #80
Have you not seen the 8 then, just the X?
Rickardo to Regprentice
14 Sep 17 #88
That is the ultra premium X. IPhone 8 same design as this. All the sensors are under the glass and have always been on iPhones, since the glass covers the entire front, including over the bezel. Rather than a "flat tyre inset", it's the display that has been extended around the sensor array, the idea being that it's mainly the notification bar area that's moved.

Complete balls up start to finish

had to pay first month airtime but was told I would get a credit back for it

thought it was sorted, then got an email saying I hadn't paid

phoned again and now I think it is sorted

Don't relax just yet - I thought "sorted, finally" 5+ times with an SE on O2 refresh.
Most folk don't seem to have any bother with them but when they balls up, they want to continue ballsing up!

Oh, and don't use online chat to sort anything - the staff who work on there are blaséand work-shy - if you manage to finish a conversation with them (they often kill the chat or fob you onto someone else if it seems like you have a difficult problem), you can assume that nothing has been done or even noted.
Anon to nseaman
14 Sep 17 #82
Check your credit file, login and check what the online billing shows too - if their system somewhere thinks you owe them money, they can report it to the credit reference agencies without notifying you or even attempting to take payment (despite in my case the Direct Debit being "live" so there was no reason not to - and no reason not to send me the email that you apparently received, as I didn't get any notification that their system thought I owed them!).

BubaMan to slannmage
14 Sep 17 #71
Some have WiFi at work, some are not able or allowed to listen to stuff at work, some have offline storage, some have very little need for the Internet outside the occasional search or FB update.

I get by with 2GB per month, mostly never going over 1GB due to a mixture of the above.
The only time I get close or go over is when I'm on holiday as most of my Internet use is at home on an evening.
slannmage to BubaMan
14 Sep 17 #93
I don't use Facebook, I just listen to audio all day and sometimes I'll watch video while at work. One new Album I listened to today was 450mb, Game of Thrones was 3GB per episode.. your average podcast is 100-200mb. Sometimes I'll listen to 4 or 5 podcasts a day...

Again if you're only using 500mb like some people are saying, are you checking one web page a day? At that point don't buy this phone, go get a Nokia 3310..
androoski to slannmage
14 Sep 17 #94
Nope. My phone gets hammered all the time with incoming messages, map use, web and other such things. I don't stream video because seriously, phones are a really crap way of watching TV content. I do listen to radio and podcasts. When WiFi is available I use WiFi.

Your use patterns are (overestimated) unusual and that is lucky for the rest of us because if we all pulled that much data daily then the UK networks would not be able to cope.
Agharta to slannmage

Did this with three SEs and one 7 last time, no issues at all with the cancellation with the SE all were brand new un registered so 12 month apple warranty as well. The 7 was a perfectly fine not a mark on it, had 11.5 months if apple warranty went ok until I got an email to say I hadn't paid and owed them £500+ for the contract, despite my bill being zero. Customer Service couldn't explain where the email cane from so waiting for credit file to make sure it shows up correctly.

the 7 cost £267, can sell it for £350 at Game.

Be careful if you're looking to get any credit soon such as a mortgage as O2 have a habit of erroneously adding an early termination fee upon cancellation and instead of contacting you they pass the debt to a collection agency. All sorted now but I'm glad I waited until after moving house!
androoski
14 Sep 17 #91
I did this on the refresh deal when it was £277 and got it sorted, no effect on credit rating and no charge for 1 month. Fully unlocked perfect condition iPhone 7 with Apple warranty for 10 months.

However, maybe think carefully about this if you are not used to dealing with people and standing your ground, because it seems the call centre people working for O2 all have a completely different idea if how the rules work. If some jobsworth tries to tell you there is a 1 month charge, tell them to shut up because you've taken the option to change your mind within 14 days. If you can't get anywhere with them, end the call and try again with somebody else. If you still don't get anywhere then ask for a manager call back.

According to their T&Cs this is a perfectly fair deal, though some of them try and read it differently a manager will always OK it.

15 Sep 17 #133
Next year, I'm expecting a 9 that looks like a further iteration of the 8 design (possibly with a OLED screen). They'll likely keep the X unchanged until 2019 when you'll see its successor (possibly called the XI). Even then they'll keep the X on sale but will drop the price to make it more appealing to people upgrading from the 7/8/9.

Ok, just seen the recent posts above and the screenshot answers it. £9 per month device charge so pay off that £9 per month to own the phone and cancel the tarrif within the 14 day period and you have a cheap mobile only deal?

I have just checked and it is still available. Choose the 5gb £109 up front.

Personally I will wait. My 6 is still in great condition and these prices are only going to come down. Also it would mean moving from 64gb to 32. I'll wait and get the 128.

Phone arrived - Put sim in - Made free call - Phone Activated - Requested O2 unlock code - phone now unlocked...

HELP - There is significant confusion being expressed through multiple O2 refresh posts - about how to deal with cancelling the sim.

MANY are saying that O2 will insist you have to pay for the first 30 days.

Others are saying this is not true - that you can infact cancel the sim contract within 14 days under DSR immediately - Or that there are other ways around this.

Can anybody clear this up for us please once and for all - since this seems to be a problem for many.

Advice on this would help many many members of the hukd community - that are going for the O2 refresh deals.

Please like this post - if it would help you.

If you phone up and pay off the device plan you can ask to cancel within the 14 day cooling off period. If they claim you have to give 30 days notice (it seems to be pot luck!), you can either argue it (as they are technically wrong according to their own T&Cs!) or the next quickest way seems to be to ask for the PAC. Buy a SIM from Asda (50p for Asda SIM) or use a free one if you have one, phone up and give them the PAC and assuming the weekend is then not in the way the following working day the number should transfer out and it then closes the account. This seems to then let the automatic process kick in to cancel the contract without penalty (rather than having to give 30 days notice and pay for it). You will end up paying for a few days line rental but this seems to work. You can request for the O2 number to be transferred to O2 PAYG, but I hadn't realised this means them sending out a new SIM and then them processing the PAC process(!), so more days lost waiting for the new SIM to arrive, when it is cheaper to just buy a PAYG card in the supermarket anyway.

Before you do this, you may want to quickly download the O2 Priority app and activate it (as you need an O2 SIM for this one stage only!) - you then get lots of good offers for the future.

Cancellations hung up on me twice, third time processed with no questions asked and no mention paying full month. Fingers crossed all goes ok and they said unlock will still come through.

Having done something like 8 02 refresh deals (so tempted to get this one, but I got the last one anyway)

anyway these deals are great, so long as you don't mind the hassle afterwards
as 02 staff don't know there left hand from there right hand

once you cancel after unloxking the phone and paying off the device plan
what happens is once you cancel (I have never paid a month's extra line rental either) they tell you you will get a final bill in 14 days, usually its for anything from £1.xx to £3.xx
however I usually query this and get it refunded back.

However what is quite common is despite cancelling within the 14 day cooling off period, which you can do under UK law and there own T&C's, they often send out "Early termination fee" bills for several hundred pounds
A quick call to 02 or a live chat should resolve it

DO NOT CANCEL YOUR DIRECT DEBIT, AS THIS MAY EFFECT YOUR CREDIT FILE SHOULD 02 TRY TO TAKE MONEY OUT AND IT GETS BOUNCED BACK.

if they do take money, the quickest way to get it back is to get on to your bank and they can do a charge back with 24 hours, 02 will say wait 21 days

hope this does'nt concern people to much just my experince with 02

as soon as the phone arrives
put the 02 sim provided into the iphone
then request your unlock code
there's several ways to do this, via your online account, via the 02 app once you set it up or via live chat although they often refer you back to the online link

wait for unlock email confirmation
this will be a email stating the unlocking is done, and telling you to put in a none 02 sim and connect to itunes to complete the unlock, then its done (unlocked)

then phone up to pay off device plan in full, then cancel the airtime***
you are perfectly entitled to do this
however since the last 02 Refresh deal (iphone 7 on HUKD) a number of posters said they had to pay an extra month's service, where as others said they never.

In all my previous 7 deals this has never happened (asked to pay an extra month)

Hence "as new" (from the widely used and understood expression "as good as new") rather than new :kissing_heart: . Many of their Refresh deals still work cheaper than most other refurb deals you may find on eBay and elsewhere but are with relative confidence they are in excellent condition and with a safe(er) supplier.

They shouldn't really. Its undefined in their terms and conditions. I'm currently having a dispute with them over the last deal similar to this.

I'm just waiting one more week and then I'm off to the financial ombudsman because they've messed me around saying I've paid everything off and can cancel my direct debit and when I try get in touch they cut me off.

They can pay for my complaint to the ombudsman. Even if I have to pay up the outstanding charges, they'll lose more money than they'll get back from me

Because nowadays most phones batteries are sealed in, which kind of makes it disposable after the batteries life ends, just like your U11.
And for a phone that's almost 3 years old, it's spec holds it's own against the U11 and even boasts:
1. Larger screen 5.7" vs 5.5"
2. 3.5mm earphone socket
3. Larger capacity (3220 mAh vs 3000 mAh) replaceable battery
and we haven't even got into pricing yet! (which most people strangely seem to omit when comparing phones)

No, phone back and ask them to cancel immediately (this sounds like our will still be charged for 30 days) - if they won't, ask for your PAC and get a sim tomorrow with Asda, give them the PAC and your account should then close Tuesday.

Just a heads up! - O2 have quietly changed their contract agreement on refresh plans.

When you buy the refresh deal with the above iPhone, unlock it & pay off your device, and try to cancel the refresh airtime plan, they would take it only as a 30 days notice period as you are keeping the phone.

This means you'll end up paying for the month for a refresh plan you may or may not use!

If you return the phone then the standard 14 days cancellation with no fees applies.

Just a heads up for anyone looking at the above deal. This will add about £20-35 on top of the cost as you will be paying for the monthly airtime. See O2 terms and conditions on their website for confirmation.

I got hit by this charge so keep in min guys!
Anon
17 Sep 17 #193
This is not new if you read this thread and other recent Refresh deals - it is different customer service agents interpreting their T&Cs differently and more people have recently faced the 30 day notice message than simply having the contract closed.

If they say it is 30 days notice, ask for your PAC, get a PAYG sim from another network (Asda Mobile is 50p in their stores) then give the PAC to Asda. The following working day (normally maximum 2 days) the number will transfer and the contract will end. I have done this recently and it worked with only a free days line rental charged (if within the 14 day cooling off period).

If you read the T&Cs as you suggest, 10.4 is clear that you can cancel and keep the handset (someone quoted it a few posts back),

17 Sep 17 #194
Brilliant.

It does have a marginally larger screen, in a MUCH bigger body
The headphone socket is becoming a part of history, and I have AirPods anyway
Although the battery is slightly larger, in my U11 it lasts longer (and charges faster)
The Note 8 doesn't have a removable battery, so are Samsung going backwards?
(this also enables the newer more advanced phones to be waterproof)

So, that's all the things you thought were better on your Note 4 - now what about the 1,001 things that you know are better on my U11, so didn't mention?

I ordered one yesterday. Received it today and called customer service to get the contract cancelled. It's a nightmare. First person said I can't cancel within 14 days. After being on phone for 40 minutes, another guy told me that I can cancel it immediately with no charges. They said I have to pay the device amount first and then they will process the cancellation. So I paid the rest of the amount over the phone and he then transferred the call to cancellation department. The lady there said they need 30 days notice period so contract will be cancelled effective Oct 27 and I need to pay one month. I said Section 2 says that I can cancel it within the 14 day period. Then they are saying Section 8 says 30 days notice required. After talking to the person of 15 mins, she is still not convinced. I requested to talk her manager , after 10 minutes , her manager repeated the same and also said that since I paid the device in full I am not eligible for the 14 day change of mind. I told her that her customer service confirmed that I can cancel straight away. Manager apologised for that. I said an apology is not sufficient and need to get that first month cost waived. She said she need to go through all the recordings and then she will give me a call. All this happened this evening so waiting for a call back.

Do I need to activate the iPhone by adding it to iTunes for it to be eligible for unlocking from O2 ? I just put the SIM and I can see O2 in the status bar. I can receive calls. Will that be enough to register the phone to the network ? Also, how long does it take to get it unlocked ?
Anon
29 Sep 17 #207
You need to insert the SIM and I suggest calling 202 (free call to O2) and just play with a couple of the menus so it latches on the network - no need to talk to anyone (in fact if you phoned CS on it you are fine already). Request for it to be unlocked (I used online chat). No need to link to iTunes but will need to be linked to your Apple ID as it uses this on the Apple system - once unlocked and you insert a new SIM off a different network (assuming WiFi connection) it should unlock and then be permanently unlocked.

if they don’t play ball on the 30 day notice period (as they do seem to be changing this depending on who you talk to!), don’t waste time arguing further just request a PAC - get a cheap SIM and give the new network the code. Next working day/day after it will transfer and close the account. Those who have done this (including me) have not been charged for the 30 days, just a couple of days while the contract was live. Final bill arrives 14 days later (but check the online account - you don’t always get notified).

Updates ...........

Just now, I received a call from O2, they informed me that my contract is cancelled effective today and I don't have to pay anything. They cannot say how much will be my bill. Hopefully it will be a small amount ( £2-3) .

Also this morning I have received the email confirming the unlock status of my iPhone. I did put my EE sim in it and was able to receive a call and saw 4G data icon.

Unlocking ...
Unlock request was fullfilled in 16 hours. I requested through My O2 website. I managed to unlock it without linking the phone with an Apple ID. Use Wifi network to navigate till the screen where it asks whether to set it as a new iPhone or port it from a previous iPhone. At that point you can call the O2 number from a different number, also it should display O2 on the top portion of the screen. Left it like that overnight.

Thanks for the help especially Anon

Hi,

Some advice please.

I have received a PAC code which needs to be enabled to cancel the o2 air time. However I don't wish to use the number so what is the best way around this.

Do I use two PAC codes? i.e. change number using one PAC code and then use another PAC code to change back again?

I might have a old o2 PAYG sim lying around and potentially I could use the PAC code on that?
Anon
30 Sep 17 #210
Just transfer it to a PAYG SIM that you won't need and then forget about it. Remember to activate the O2 Priority app before you use use the PAC as the app will then work. Yes I believe you can transfer O2 PAYM to PAYG.

Normally you have to submit a complaint to 02. I've done so via email and then give them up to 6 weeks to resolve the situation. Which I've also done. Then you can report them to the financial ombudsman. I've been lied to several times by 02 and I've done everything in my power to resolve this situation but the bottomline is that I refuse to pay for a service I've not used at any point.
