Instant Ink is not expensive, its very good value
£1.99 a month for 50 pages
£3.49 for 100 pages
£7.99 for 300 pages
Pages printed over your limit are charged at £1 for each 15 pages (or £1 for each 10 with the free deal), or you can increase your subscription level.
Unused pages roll over, but only to the maximum of your monthly limit – so, if you were on the 50 pages a month plan, you could never roll over more than 50 pages in total.

Whatever the price, the question is are compatible inks available cheaply.
AFAICT the cheapest set on Ebay is £39.99

2 Sep 17 #18
If you are a high volume user, then 300 pages at £7.99 using HP Instant Ink for 5 months would cost the same as the compatible inks.
The good thing about the Instant Inks is that you can change plan month by month, some months I seldom use the printer so pay £1.99, then have times when I print a lot and switch plans, its very user friendly
palmerspepsi
2 Sep 17 #19
sounds like a good deal until you realise that the ink costs £92.00 to replace
dancingbear84 to palmerspepsi
2 Sep 17 #22
Except actually whilst they may cost 90 quid to replace for genuine cartridges the price per page is very cheap as they print ~1500 for colour or ~3000 for black based on the 5% iso standard that all manufacturers use, works out to be under 6p per page assuming all colours used equally at the same rate, when compared to the cheaper printers (to buy) they have a lower yield ink that costs around 20 quid for a tri colour, so if you use all of the cyan then you will chuck the cartridge, even if it is full of yellow and magenta inks.

I have the previous model the 8610 it isn't that big, and the multifunction is really useful, I didn't have to change the ink cartridges for 18 months and when I did I bought compatible cartridges for 20 quid from a local, reputable company.

Compared to the hp 2132 for example which is currently 20 quid everywhere to buy that works out to be over 12p per page based on the same iso levels this is a much more cost effective option.

If you use instant ink you can pay £24 for 12 months after the trial and print up to 600 pages. £40 for 1200 pages. £96 for 3600 pages. A single set of cartridges at £92 won't get you far if printing full colour a4. It's doesn't matter what you print so I get best use out of instant ink by printing photos. 50 a month for £1.99 up to a4 size. I've had 3 sets of cartridges for my 6970 since June.

I suppose HP's business plan is to sell the ink rather than the printer.
Musicrab to othen
2 Sep 17 #32
But you have to buy the printer first. This is HPs plan to take over the home printer world. The Instant Ink scheme has been very well thought out and works very well. However, give the scheme a couple of years and the price will inevitably go up.

R0adRat to ministrymason
2 Sep 17 #26
I bought the 8720 last week and have been really impressed. Yes it's bigger than my old one but it's got a big touch screen and looks very modern. Prints b&w quickly and I've also printed a few photos which are good too. The trade in deal is easy to arrange, you just fill in an online form and choose your collection date and they'll send you the postage labels. Can't say whether it's worth the extra over this one but with the trade Ins, these are great deals whichever one you opt for....
Ps the trade in is after the purchase so it doesn't matter if you use ebuyer or another place. I bought mine from hp direct for peace of mind - £5 more.

Depends on what you print. HP like all other cartridge manufacturers calculate their page yield at 5% coverage, yes then you'd get 1500 pages from a set ofcolour cartridges. Instant Ink doesn't care about coverage, you can print full colour A4 pages with your allowance. BIG difference if you are into photo prints or colour heavy material like brochures.
Uridium
2 Sep 17 #53
Instant Ink might sound expensive at £1.99 per month if you only printing a few lines of text per page but If you are printing colour heavy pages/photos then £24 per year for 600 full page A4 photo sheets seems pretty cheap to me.....

Many thanks for highlighting this one Bowdiddly - you just cost me £39.98!
I followed the link and discovered that the HP Officejet Pro 8720 was also on offer for £39.98 after trade-in, the discount is £100 for this model.

I currently own the HP Officejet Pro 8610 and, overall I've been happy with it but it's been well used and is around three years old, so for the price it just made sense, especially when you factor in the three year extended HP warranty and the two months instant ink subscription.

It's not an offer that I was aware of so I'm grateful, thanks for sharing.

ihaveaquestion
2 Sep 17 #69
Do you know what their definition of 'working' is? For instance I have a very old Lexmark p3150 and it turns on, but there aren't drivers for the latest versions of windows. If they just switch it on seee that it works and use the components then aybe it's good as a trade in? If on the other hand, theyre faffing around trying to get it to print something, maybe they could decide it's obsolete? I'm a bit wary of buying, then trading in, in case they reject my claim.
Me1791
2 Sep 17 #70
The trade-in offer is provided by HP and according to the details from the website, provided you can submit proof-of-purchase then you should be entitled to the discount - BUT I'm not sure if the trade-in scheme will apply to HP employees, often there is a caveat in the small print excluding employees of a manufacturer/retailer. from offers. I'd suggest you check the fine print before committing and if in any doubt, run it by the customer support team.

This is the relevant HP Webpage covering the trade-in deal:

Hope this helps.

I don't currently have either the HP Officejet Pro 8710 or the HP Officejet Pro 8720 - I currently use the HP Officejet 8610 and can confirm that the print quality on that model is visually great - I'm a long time keen amateur/sem-pro photographer and have used it for proofs and quite a few shots that I like personally and it hasn't disappointed.

Based on this offer and the reviews that I've seen, I've now opted to move on to the HP Officejet Pro 8720. I trust HP when it comes to build quality, print quality and support, with both frequent Driver and printer Bios updates, at least in the near future.

Obviously, if you want a professional print output, I'd suggest that you will still need to pass on your photos.

If you only want the 2 months free ink, how, or what do you get?
do they send you cartridges or what?
Me1791
2 Sep 17 #80
I'm unsure of what you mean about only wanting the two months free ink. I believe that you only qualify for that offer if you trade-in within the terms of the offer. If you do, you can use the supplied discount code when you sign up to the HP Instant Ink service and you will receive, via post, a new set of ink cartridges (in addition to the ones included with the new printer) which you can then install to cover your ink costs while printing for the period of two months. I'm unsure of the number of pages covered by the ink offer but, from what I've read on this thread, it appears to be fairly substantial.

You can cancel or change your Instant Ink subscription at any time - I assume this policy remains valid even if you only plan on using the free two month ink entitlement. Keep in mind though, that if you are continuing to use HP Printers, the Instant Ink service does offer the most cost-effective way of making sure you don't run out - it's a modest monthly cost compared to forking out for a new set of cartridges when they are empty.

I apologise if I've misunderstood your question.

The hp site says when you trade in a laser printer or scanner? Never heard of a laser scanner before!

I'm assuming you can trade in any printer as long as it works and is over 6 months old?

It's a little vague.

Can I trade in an old inkjet?

Update: think I have just answered my own question. When you go to claim you can choose other in the printer choice to return. Under that you can choose inkjet or laser jet. I chose inkjet and the next screen said I would receive £60 cash back.

So if anyone is wondering you can send in an inkjet printer.

I'm confused about this free ink service. Could I not:

Month 1 - subscribe for 50 sheets. £1.99 paid. unsubscribe 1/2 way through
once subscription is over (day 1 of month 2) i print hundreds of printouts - they give you an extra capacity cartridge.
500 sheets later (or whatever the capacity), I re-subscribe for 50 sheets.
they notice i'm low on ink, send me a new ink cartridge for £1.99.
rinse+repeat above

What's the catch?

edit - ah

You can cancel enrollment in HP Instant Ink at any time without penalty. Before you cancel the service, read the following information carefully:
  • HP Instant Ink cartridges do not work after the end of your current billing period, and you are required to return them to HP. To continue printing after your billing cycle ends, make sure you have standard replacement ink cartridges ready to use in your printer.

R0adRat
4 Sep 17 #98
Im by no means a printer expert and have only used the 8720 and not the 8710. It's bigger though because it's designed to be used more heavily. It's collects all your print outs within the machine like an office printer, rather than throwing them out the front like a lot of cheaper home printers. It will print pages much more quickly and has a larger, more modern touch screen on the front making it easier to use. That and for £40 You get a brand new updated printer with a 3year warranty for peace of mind.

100% correct !!!
HP did a sneaky on the one i have (predecessor 8610) and updated the software so that it could NOT accept compatible (very cheap) cartridges. Due to consumer and "legal" backlash they then offered a retro-software update to allow use of compatibles...but they always glitch now and print alternate blotchy pages so are not worth the hassle!
I buy the HP cartridges, not on the "instant ink" however, as they last a long time, especially the XL version.

The trade-in deal is offered by HP. Although not all retailers are advertising the promotion, provided you can submit a valid proof-of-purchase and conform to the other terms of the offer, I can't see any reason why you shouldn't be entitled to the deal. T&C's state purchase through a "reseller" do you think HP Direct is acceptable?
Me1791
9 Sep 17 #110
I received the new printer yesterday and have completed the HP web based process for all of the discounts available. The free two month Instant Ink service subscription is straightforward using the code supplied on the Ebuyer website but the trade-in and three year extended warranty deals are a bit more involved.

You have to supply proof-of-purchase, relatively straightforward i- either scan a receipt or print it to PDF from the re-sellers webpage but... apparently this should list the serial number of the new printer - I've never seen that listed on any receipt/invoice for a product that I've bought. On that basis I've supplied a PDF of my receipt but, minus any indication of the serial number - I included that separately when prompted for it during the application process.

It's also only made apparent when completing the process that you are responsible for securely packaging the printer you are returning for trade-in - basically you have to come up with your own box/shipping container prior to collection by the courier service. I'm planning to ship my previous printer back in the same box that the new printer arrived in since I don't have any other practical solution.

All in, it's still an excellent deal but be aware of some relatively minor complications along the way.

Fingers crossed that the trade-in refund and the three year warranty extension also work as smoothly.

Many thanks for your reply. :-)

Trying again with the nearly identical 'Invoice' page from the order page.

Save some time and don't make the same mistake I did!

For those who signed up to instant ink how long does the welcome pack normally take to come? I know it says up 10 business days but is it really that long? I've not seen any notification of it being sent yet. I'm on the start up inks and don't want to run out before I get the instant inks.

Also note that the small print in the T&C's says you have to remove the ink cartridges / toner and wrap up separately.

I wanted to trade in an old LJ5P but for some reason that didn't come up in their trade in list, 5, 5L, 6, 6P but not 5P.
Contacted their helpdesk about it but they didn't seem to understand the question saying I had to do a like for like trade. i.e. inkjet for an inkjet. That is what the T&C's say but doesn't fit with them listing lasers as well. Oh well. :-)

Worked out ok anyway since I couldn't actually get the thing to do a self-test after being in the garage for 2 years. :-)
Trading in an older all-in-one that usually takes about ten minutes to make up its mind to print instead.

Cool. Remember when you get it to claim your extra free month of instant ink from a refer a friend

Where can we refer a friend, and does the friend need to order it to get my 1 month free ink?
Laura.Palmer

When you get the printer, it comes with a "starter" set of cartridges. You can use these to make copies immediately. During the software driver setup process you are asked whether you want to enroll in the HP's instant ink service. This printer comes with a promo code UK2FREE that gives you 2 months free ink. If you also add the refer a friend code - my one is j78vP you will get a 3rd month free too.
After you are all setup, you can then refer a friend yourself with your own code that HP give you during the setup process.

When your 3 months trial finishes, you can either pay HP every month for ink or buy your own refill cartridges from HP or refilled compatible ones.
If you REALLY want to save money you can refill cartridges yourself using a refill kit and an spare set of cartridges. Send me a message if you'd like to know how.

I have an Epson printer thats run out of ink last time I tried printing. Do I need to include ink separately for the trade in so HP can print and check if it works? If it doesn't work, would I be able to claim at least £20 which is also another cash back claim with the deal?
