Just been into two London CPW stores the instore price of Pixel XL is £449 today (Monday 25 Sept 2017).
CPW shop assistant told me it's the same price £449 in all CPW shops all over the UK?
How/ where/ when, did you get the pixel XL for £419? Thanks...

XZ Premium looks aweful I find personally. I agree the Pixel XL looks just as bad lol.

Bootloop was a while back now. May as well say phones setting on fire is Samsung's thing. The G6 is superior to the Pixel in basically every way.

I'm going on personal experience with the phone. For me it wasn't good. Lens flare in particular very annoying and low light not fantastic.

Well I owned it for one. Lens flare was horrendous and getting blurry pictures when I shouldn't have was an issue. Low light was terrible.

Ahh. Hahaha. Little bit of true. However I prefer it over Pixel Launcher or Google Launcher. Maybe because I've got used to it. Touch wizz on S8 looks OK better than S7 had. But its Android so we can use and customize whatever we want right?

I'm talking about the UI not the phone. Not a fan of the Sony phone shape either if I'm honest although I can see that others might like them. The UI though? The icons are hideous, like a Tesco blue stripe redesign. The ironic thing is the standard ones are nice so they changed them for nothing.

Have you seen XZ Premium yet? It looks more premium than any other phone on the market in my opinion. S8 for example looks like a toy. Pixel XL...no comments one of the ugliest but I like its functionality.
jazzuk777
5 Sep 17 #123
I was interested in the Nokia 6 for that but the reviews put me off. Hopefully their first gen androids are a practice run and we can look forward to some Moto beating phones.

Lots of people want a decent camera, probably a significant amount more than need serious CPU grunt for gaming etc. Most parents for example.

And almost any android phone has fairly similar functionality, within reason, though some UIs are clunkier and uglier then others, Sony being one of the ugliest and cheapest looking.

I haven’t an in depth knowledge of their retail process but my understanding - based on other retailers and the amount of BS I’ve been fed in the past by their staff - is that Carphone Warehouse stores don’t just say ‘I want 5000 units because I think they will sell’; they are allocated stock from head office based on various algorithms. None of the staff instore would know the details given to you in my opinion, so at best it was banter, designed to placate you - I don’t think your comment was particularly constructive either - or at least it didn’t really add much to the whys and wherefores of this deal, unless you were implying that people shouldn’t buy this because CPW didn’t sell many.

Ive got XZP and is great. And who buying phone for camera? Design, screen and functionality is what I need. Pixel was over £700 when I bought XZP via O2 refresh deal for £430. I dont like rear fingerprint reader in Pixel also 32GB still holding me. 128GB price is horrible.

Why wouldn't they, they work for CPW. I'd say they know more than you. I makes sense to me @£700+ devices Sat in boxes doing nothing.
Nice to see you placing great constructive posts again.

More versatile how? It’s slower and less reliable, and many MANY apps won’t let you cache to an SD card.

As far as I’m concerned the only advantage is being able to put an old card in a new phone but that means loads of detritus and old folders carrying over from the old phone, as well as increased risk of errors and incompatibilities - e.g. app errors. Just as an example I’ve just swapped an SD card from a KeyONE to an LG G6 and try as I might I simply cannot get Pocketcasts to store podcasts on the SD card, even though it’s working fine. I recently had to wipe the card because another phone I was using said it was corrupted, even though it worked fine in the previous handset - and still did when I swapped it out.

SD cards are cheap, that’s their advantage. The ‘versatility’ of swapping into other phones comes at a cost, and I believe that’s part of the reason Google doesn’t like implementing them (though most assume it’s purely greed, which I don’t prescribe to).

My 2 cents on this.

I can live with 32GB but it isn’t ideal.

I had this phone for a little while and it’s really nicely built and feels like a really weighty, solid and premium device to me. I will caveat the previous remark with the fact that I am not in the least bit obsessed with bezels as some are, as I think bezels improve productivity and allow you to grapple and fumble your phone without catching things on the screen. This is just my personal opinion based on ownership of devices like the S7 Edge, S8 and S8 Plus. The LG G6 has screen/bezel ratio about right in my opinion but the Pixel didn’t disgust me in this regard, and it wouldn’t be a basis for determining a device to be mid-range.

The Pixel is incredibly fast and smooth. I’m not sure what secret sauce Google uses but they obviously have some supremely talented coders because no Android device comes close - not even the S8 or the Oneplus 5. Just having stock Android alone isn’t the only reason - I believe Google is doing more low-level optimisations with this, and my more long-term ownership of other Google devices leads me to the conclusion that they retain their speed and stability in ways that Samsung and other devices simply don’t.

This device comes with lifetime unlimited Google Photos uploads at full quality. This is a really nice perk if you ask me, and isn’t suggested enough as an advantage to the Pixel often enough.

Oreo is already on this device, and is a really nice upgrade.

There is absolutely no bloatware rubbish and pointless apps on this device. There is no need to disable anything, uninstall anything or turn off any features. It is lightweight, fast and a pleasure to use.

As mentioned before, the Pixel 2 will launch soon. I don’t expect the price of this to drop much further, but you never know. Maybe it’s worth waiting just in case but it could be that supplies dry up before then as the XL at least has never been particularly easy to get in its 128GB form.

An SD card can’t replace internal storage either, but some people assume it does.

It's £100 less and won't run out of storage in a week.

It looks much better, has better speakers, a brighter screen, a much better finger print sensor and waterproof.

The internals are pretty much the same.

Tough to pin down one model without spending some time with them but interested in:

Leaning towards Note 8 if honest but excited for iphone 8, just not the price tag!

Went to my local store, also quoted £449 for the XL. They tried to sell me a contract, but I think online deals are better. Still a very decent phone despite being a year old.

I am keeping an eye on Nokia though, £200 for the Nokia 6 which is pretty much stock.

4 Sep 17 #106
Unfortunately this deal doesn't exist in the shops. I went into 3 outlets and they said the price was the same as the online price (£449). They indicated someone may have managed to get an open box, returned one for the discounted price.

So for all of those that got it a few days ago don't worry!

However, CPW has "plenty" in stock in their central warehouse and I suspect during this month the price will drop to £400 or £350 as they attempt to clear these in time for the new models in Oct.

I'll never buy another Google phone again. The only company I know of which fails to recall faulty products. Paid £280 last year for a phone only to have it get stuck in a boot loop due to a manufacturing error 14 months later (2 months after the warranty expired). Checked online and everybody else was saying the same thing

I still have my Nexus 4 that I ordered from the Google Play store via HUKD just over 4 years ago and it's still an amazing phone for the £160 I paid. I'd love to upgrade to the Google Pixel but the price is still quite high for what I would pay for a phone.

Its great price considering they were too expensive when released

actually i managed to got it cheaper on ebay but still sold it as dont like overall experience that i was getting from Samsung phones i.e SD card option, mircacast support to connect with TV and connect with laptop via SideSync, real water proofing etc. I was disappointed with ear piece sound as well and speaker is worse than 6p but battery life is excellent

If you just want to get this for camera/stock experience then even camera of nexus 5X/6p is great. I have taken pics from nexus 5x and Pixel XL and there was no difference in quality when compared it side by side ..camera of last nexus devices are very underrated and only those who own boht can see that these camera are comparable in still photography

Just to add my personal experience with Carphone Warehouse and Google Pixel.

I was really excited to get my Pixel as it was a phone I'd been after for a long time, however when I finally got it the screen had a terrible pink hue to it. Aftercare was good, I was able to return it to store (purchased online) for an exchange of a "new" phone, however the next had a washed out screen where whites weren't white. I went back again where the store manager offered to let me open all the Pixel's he had in stock (5) to find one I was happy with - I didn't want to waste my time and actually led to me believe that a lot of the phones Carphone Warehouse sell as "new" are actually returns or refurbished. I ended up returning the phone and had to cancel the contract that came with it - the return was a whole other story, I had to print out the page from the website to prove I was allowed to return it to store.

You might get lucky and get a good phone, but I suspect a lot of these being flogged off cheap are seconds or returns/refurbs - just check out the reviews for the Pixel on the Carphone Warehouse website a lot of them appear to have QC issues - it's not a coincidence.

I'm still using my Nexus 5x (no bootloop issue yet) and the whole experience has put me off "risking" getting a new phone.

Like I say, just my experience and I'm sure many others have had nothing but success with Carphone.

Well if the last 3 Moto phones I had (plus my wife's G5) are anything to go by, that's not anything to celebrate. Lenovo seem to be responsible for a noticeable drop in hardware quality and increase in bugginess on their watch. My G5 Plus is likely to be my last Moto phones (and I have had a G1, G2, X Play, G4 Plus and now the G5 Plus).

Shame other companies aren't realising stock is actually an advantage, not a drawback.

The bezels are fine imo, the stereo speakers make up for it. I find the curved displays of Samsung pretty uncomfortable. The LG G6 is available for around 400 if you'd like but bootlooping issues are their forté...

I had the phone for a year and enjoyed my time with it. There's an SD slot and apps can be moved onto it. The camera was pretty good, if you've got a steady hand night shots look great.

For 320 I doubt you could do much better, especially since you get warranty/peace of mind.

Just running it at stock, they stopped updating the software ages ago and it does run a little slow sometimes but it's nothing I can't put up with for a few more months .

My only major problem is that the screen on time is appalling, which is to be expected with a 3 year old phone.

Not set in stone about getting the Pixel 2 but will decide once it's been released and weigh up my options then

I bought a Nexus 6P the day it was released for about £449 from what I recall. It's now a 2 year old device and software-wise runs practically the same as the day I got it with the only thing that's become worse being the battery life.

The 6P was massively ahead of the game in terms of software. I'm pretty sure I was running Android 8 beta on it about 5 months or so ago, which is laughable considering how phones like the Note 8 or S8 are barely even on Android 7.1.

Every single Nexus phone I've had has been great (4,5,6P) and the only things that have let them down have been battery life and camera (until the 6P had a good one) and lasted multiple years whilst still never becoming sluggish or incapable.

Im highly tempted to buy this since I know full well the Pixel 2 will no doubt be an £800 odd phone, and I don't want an iPhone/Samsung. The original Pixel would still easily provide two great years of use for £449.

I thought the 32gb would be a bad choice that I'd regret on my 6P but two years later I still have 7gb free. With Google backing up photos and stuff, there's barely anything I even store on the phone. The days of me being interested in the novelty of apps and games is long gone and mostly everything I want is streamed through 3 mobiles unlimited 4G for £25pm so I'm finding less and less need to even have large storage capacity.

The major manufacturers provide updates for two years on android.

After that, it seems as though custom ROMs are the way forward.

Wouldn't trust Chinese phones for updates though... Huawei might be decent.
ArthurDent1
3 Sep 17 #51
That might be 3 years from release, but if I buy it now it's barely more than 2 years - for a £400 device that's pretty awful. Unfortunately other manufacturers seem to be even worse.

I presume everyone that doesn't think this is good value for money don't care about security updates? My HTC one stopped getting security patches after less than 18 months (I won't be buying another HTC phone for that reason alone). This phone is guaranteed monthly patches until October 2019 - 3 years after release. Not as good as apple but better than any other android manufacturer. Updates for the oneplus phones are a bit of an unknown quantity which is why I think this is a better deal if you are not confident installing custom ROMs.

I went into a CPW store before I bought my new phone & asked about the Pixel. He said they had over stocked on them thinking people would buy them, they apparently sent the majority of the stock back. Once the reductions came they are selling but stocks are low. Looks like a good deal. I've been loyal to iPhone and iOS for 10 years and may jump ship on 12/09/17 if iPhone is £1000

Main one on my radar is the Huawei Note 9 approx £375 amazon prime.

There is a youtube video on how to make android look like iOS in 10 steps, quite impressed if it works.

£1000 for a phone is getting silly, retina MacBook pro 128GB 2015 costco is £1025, great machine.
daBluone to deany76
3 Sep 17 #27
While I strongly believe that any business selling non life essential goods should be able to sell at the price of their choosing, I agree if the Iphone is north of £1000 I’m also jumping ship. Used an iPhone since day one and tied myself in with the ipad and watch but now barely use the ipad and don’t feel the Apple Watch is that useful so ready for change I guess. I buy Apple because of the build quality, customer service, and for iOS realibility. Android devices in the phone space are now equal, minus the customer service (as they don’t have on the spot retail solutions like Apple).

Heat for this deal. 32GB not quite enough for me personally.
deany76 to daBluone

Which android phone are you looking at if iPhone is £1000+?
I think a 2 year warrantee minimum is important at these prices.
I paid £699 for my 128GB iphone 6 in Sept 2017, I use with a mophie battery pack as iPhone battery shot.
I'm a heavy user and get the most of the iPhones functionality.
I've a moto £60 android that I've tinkered with but do prefer iOS
Would miss my apple watch and cardless payment and iOs

I'd say max for me is £799 maybe £849for 128GB iPhone 10th

Personally still holding out until Pixel 2 is announced , all depends on the price as I thought this launched at a ridiculously high one, would really like pure android experience though.

Still using my HTC one m8 which I've had for nearly 3 years now , cost me about £500 at the time but considering how much I use it and how long it's lasted it's been worth it

Do i get this or the s8 pus for 619 at giffgaff. Im really not sure how far touchwiz has come and that was the main concern for me. The s8 wins in design, waterproofing, sd card, camera is similar but is it all worth it if the phone is gonna lag like all my previous samsung phones? Someone help me please.

Ooo this is good deal. If I didn't have iPhone 7 plus, I would certainly be popping in tomorrow. No bloatware, fast update, should remain a fast phone for a few years I think.

Was that a humble brag? Only joking. But seriously, this isn't a match for iPhone 7 Plus in opinion

‌ no it wasn't a humble brag. I really like the unlimited storage and the camera. I'm a new parent, like new parent, I take a lot of pictures of my new son. While the iPhone is pretty good, the pixel is a generation better in camera. Oh and that screen
saltyzip to Dekard97

Why not? It got a verge score of 9, same as iPhone 7 plus, and the former has better camera.

Lifetime backups of full resolution photos and 4k video to boot!

Not forgetting latest security updates released monthly and Oreo update being released now!

Hope this stays for a week or two. Will see what Apple iPhone 8 announcement is and if nothing spectacular may go for this.

Bargain!
About the price they should have been.

There must be a new Google phone incoming with all these price drops

Getting cheaper as the Pixel 2 is just around the corner! Great phone but I went back to Samsung.

Pixel 2 coming soon, I hear. If I'm sticking to a budget, I'd go with a Moto. If not, I'd wait it out. £450 is too much money for year-old mobile tech, that will no longer be current in a month or two.

Shows as £449 for me too online. Is the £419 price likely to be store specific?
