This is the early 2016 model, the new ones are much more powerful
Agharta to ashuk

I'd be amazed if it's much more powerful as the CPUs are both 4.5W and the jump is from Sky Lake to Kaby Lake which is a minor upgrade.
slannmage to Agharta
2 Sep 17#14
It's not much more powerful, the big upgrades are the GPU and Storage speed. I found it's the difference of 15FPS in Overwatch to 25fps in overwatch while playing at like 720p with all settings on low...... so you won't be playing anything graphically demanding on either.

Well, no, it's an ultraportable. If you're buying this to play games on you're doing it wrong.

Good price for this model. Ultimately the new ones start off at £1249 so quite a bit more. I was going to change to one of these from my MBA but found that the MBA is more powerful so decided against. Worth checking.

I almost bought one of there as i love the concept and as ido a lot of work on an external monitor the size isnt an issue. In the end i was suprpised to fine the 2016 macbook had almost exactly the same benchmark processor score as the mid 2010 macbook pro it was intended to replace (2.3 core duo) so it didnt seem worthwhile.

Very nice looking piece of kit and has a good performance too. The lack of full size USB ports and even a HDMI port make this not an option at all. Very unpractical in my opinion

I need to get a laptop for a 13 year old for schoolwork etc, and want to get her one of these - she loves the look of them and as a very long term user of Macs i am happy to pay the premium so i don't have the reinstall Windows every couple of years, deal with viruses and anti-virus software slowing everything down etc etc, and i figure it will last her for a very long time so won't have to upgrade after 3 or 4 years, so no comments about wasting money etc. My question though, is how much of a difference is there between this and the latest model? Would it really be noticeable given the amount i would save between this at £900 and one from the education store (with free Beats headphones which would also make a present - and i know they are rubbish having just had to rewire a pair but again, kids!) for £1,125?
and secondary to my question above, as you can get the M5 processor one with 512gb RAM for £1099, would that be a better choice - i hate decisions like this, too complicated!

At last a constructive post. I own the m5 2016. I can do everything I need on it and I'm doing a PhD in computing. I even run VMware on it! The key here is that they both have 8GB RAM which is usually the issue for future proofing with MacBooks for none power users. 256GB is also more then enough for most users. The m5 upgrade was a decent jump last year and the m3 of the first model was rubbish. I would say save your money and buy this m3 which is still a very capable machine. Also beats prior to the solo 2 and Powerbeats 2 were indeed rubbish. The 3 series with the W1 chip are actually very good and never cut out. They are great for pop, hip hop, dance and rock (so probably what most teenagers love!). Before anyone else chips in I'm a B&W man at heart and I use my beats the most due to Bluetooth and W1 chip. The M3 2017 is like the M5 2016. All of this is irrelevant for your daughter. I'd even say at 13 you might be better looking at a MacBook Air 2013 or above (with 256GB) for about £450 on eBay but you know your daughter and how she'll look after stuff. I would say that this should last her most of school unless she gets into video editing!

Ignore my questions above, decided this was a good enough deal so have bought a lovely Rose Gold one before they go out of stock! I am absolutely certain she won't realise it is not this years model, and we had originally been planning to buy it earlier this year so this was the model we were going to get anyway!
Thanks for the heads up on the deal...

Also there really is nothing else like this when it comes to portability! Some other ultrabooks come close but are actually about the same price or specs or have fans which output a fair amount of noise...and of course they don't run Mac OS!

2 Sep 17#36
There wasn't an i5 version of this model. There is now but it is just a rebranding of the m5 which tbh is rather naughty by intel. Even is the speeds on benchmarks are the same as some models of i5 from about 3 years ago due to turbo boast they are still very different!

Great screen and outstanding proportions. Such a stunningly tiny machine and with the mac OS it works really well, because it actually works without issues like windows. We live in 2017, so a year old model makes zero difference to 98% of laptop users that use it for Facebook, netflix, office and emails.
Those having a moan about the price need to understand it's genuinely a good machine that won't need the operating system reinstalled in a year and won't be subject to the viruses that windows have. And they seem to hold their value so it won't be worthless in 2 years, like your windows laptop.

Skip to my bullet points below to save time
This MacBook has been redesigned to be much lighter, thinner and smaller than the MacBook Air. It removes ALL ports (like USB 3.0) and just leaves a headphone jack and a single USB C port (the new standard which people are not completely used to). The main concept is that this laptop should be completely wireless and able to pick up and go whenever you need it. I has no fans, so the laptop runs completely silent. However, it means that the processor isn't very powerful for demanding things but is great for web browsing, writing documents, video chatting and light video and photo editing. It has a fantastic new Retina display (miles ahead of the MacBook Air's) but a slightly lower battery life. It also features Apple's larger Force Touch trackpad which is much more sustainable and is better overall, along with the new Butterfly keyboard which some people love and some people hate because it is incredibly thin and doesn't feel like you're pressing on much. You get used to the keyboard quickly and it allows you to type much faster and with less mistakes. The keyboard has individual lights underneath each key so they light up much brighter and last longer. The display is also much brighter and lasts longer. The new MacBooks no longer feature a light up Apple logo (due to hazards for factory workers exposed to chemicals) but it looks much more professional.
So all of the new things:
Advantages New slim, light and portable design Completely silent processor Efficient processor (so much less heating up and better battery management)
Brand new USB-C port (the future) which is faster and more capable of doing different things (i.e power a whole monitor) New, longer lasting keyboard and lighting system Fantastic new display (looks light years beyond the MacBook Air's) which is slightly smaller (1.3 inches smaller) Faster, more efficient SSDs (much faster storage - application open quicker, computer loads quicker etc.) Longer support for OS updates Massive new Force Touch glass trackpad which allows you to press harder to expand things Newer, faster RAM Stronger body Different colours to choose from - Space Grey (Dark grey), Silver, Gold, Rose Gold (soft pink)
Really high resale value (if you ever want to sell
Disadvantages Smaller display (quality makes up for it) Lower battery life (10 hours vs 12 hours) The processors aren't that much faster. Instead they focus on making it silent and cooler to run (which is good) Less upgradability (even though the Air didn't really have any) You may not like the new keyboard Price (small things make it jump in price!) No standard ports (only headphone jack and brand new USB-C)
In my opinion, I think it's a great upgrade over the MacBook Air!

The main things you need to think about are: are you ready to adapt to a new keyboard? Are you okay with less battery life (two hours less)? Can you manage with just one port (you can buy an adapter to get back some ports)?

Mine came through yesterday and only opened the box a couple of hours ago. I'm typing on it now. The screen is incredible,... really! Performance is great for what I use it for and is considerably more than what I'm used to. I have a hub on order from aliexpress, which will satisfy the port issue, but in all honestly I'm not sold on the keyboard. I realise there will be an adjustment period, but it shouldn't feel like a compromise off the bat, but it does. Its not a natural feel. Apparently the 2017 has deeper "perceived" travel and any model you try in an Apple Store will be "better", but is something I will (have to) get used to but it's really the only negative. It's a superb machine and the display is light years away from the current Air's and form factor is just ridiculous. Just thought I would chip in with an opinion and would echo @sellingthings123 's comment and pro's and con's. Good luck on your purchase :sunglasses:

I've just broken the screen on my 13" MBP and it's likely to cost around £600 to replace. Tempted to buy something like this instead and have a new machine for little extra cost. But, it's September and apple are likely to announce their new range next week ... Should I wait?
Was tempted by this, but didn't they improve the keyboard in the latest version?

Thanks OP for the deal. I've been doing a bit of google-fu and ended up ordering from Toby deals. They have 10 on sale in silver (9 now left). The other colours are a little more. It's got a US keyboard but so did my last macbook air, so don't consider it a problem.

John Lewis one comes with 3 years warranty. Did you consider that? My MacBook Pro in the past stopped working outside a year warranty and apple wouldn't fix it without payment. For an extra £120 I would consider John Lewis. Just saying  Although if you don't care about extra warranty yours is indeed a great price!

Actually, no :persevere: .. that's a good point. I was lucky enough to have my 2010 Macbook Air last for 6.5 years of 9+ hour a day usage (had 81% battery capacity left according to Coconut Battery) and it finally bit the bullet with water damage a fortnight ago (Sainsburys over carbonated tonic exploded and a bit got in it from across the room). It was a dinosaur but did me proud. Sorry to hear about your Pro. I would have expected more from Apple customer service
