This looks pretty decent for right in the middle of the school holidays, 11th August departing from Southampton to the gorgeous Norweigan fjords. I also think it's a great itinerary to occupy the kids as there is plenty of things to do in the ports, such as walking/hiking, kayaking on the Fjords, taking a train in Flam and wildlife spotting. You only have to pay £200 deposit and you also get £50 onboard credit.
Princess is a good cruise company and very family friendly.
Tipping as with any cruise is extra, but you can opt and and tip individually which is what I did.

It's school holidays, unfortunately any type of holiday is expensive in August with kids. I paid £299pp for my week Norweigan Cruise from Liverpool a while ago and I've never seen a Norweigan Cruise as cheap as that since.

Mine wasn't with Princess, I did the Caribbean with Princess. I went with Cruise and Maritime which was very basic in comparison. It was a good way to see Norway though as everything is so expensive there and due to bad weather in Scotland we had to head straight to Norway so we ended up with extra time there. We did our own excursions such as hiking Pulpit Rock and going on Flam Railway. The scenery was fabulous, the weather was a bit 'sultry' at times, misty - which made the fjords look even more spectacular bit this was mid June. In August the weather should be much better.

Did this cruise several years ago but with P&O in my opinion to take advantage of the beautiful scenery a outside cabin is a must

Great, now I just need £2000, and a family.

Go on your own, it will be cheaper anyway

How much does food and drink cost as I've never been on on a cruise, I'm thinking it could be pricey?

Your food is all included, eg it's full board. They also have 'anytime dining' basically there is 24hr food all the time.
A list of what food and drink is included can be found here. Rooms service for food is also free. I liked that some drinks are included in the cost such as lemonade, tea, coffee, etc.
Drink packages are available at a cost, options here

Norway is an amazing place to cruise to but it isn't really one for the kids.
The weather can be good but often isn't so the pools etc on the ship are just too cold to use.
The stops are lovely but everything is very expensive. The train at Flaam, for example, is at least £45 each for a 90 minute round trip. The kayaking is circa £40 each for 2 hours.

You don't know my kids then. They love exploring new places. There is also loads to do on the boat for them. Open you mind, you kids might well surprise you. The cruise was actually their idea (7 and 10 girls).

You're right, I don't know your kids!
I wasn't on the cruise with our son as he was exploring Ghana! I spoke to an awful lot of parents who wished they'd cruised in the Med instead.
We were on P&O Britannia and many of the kids were bored and frustrated that they couldn't use the pools as it was cold out. They just sat in the Hot Tubs for hours on end

Oh dear. I think it does depend on the cruise company too as P&O isn't very child friendly. By contrast I think Princess is. I also think this itinerary is quite good as there isn't too many at sea days but every family and their expectations are different.

Edited as I thought this was an NCL cruise not Princess. My mistake.
