Any simple instructions on getting Play Store installed on this Fire 7?
Do I need to root or need a Windows machine to get it on there? Any simple solution to get it up and running so can install any apps and also get Nova Launcher on there to make things easier.
This guide needs Windows but found this guide which can do via the device itself.
Thanks in advance.

Hi folks, only just got around to looking at these...ordered a couple but have just realised they sent me the kids version in one case!
Ironically it's going to be for one of our kids, but if I can I'd rather remove the kid's settings. I haven't got very far because it asks me to sign up for some free yearly subscription so haven't actioned either way and turn off at that point.
I'd typically return but that window seems to have expired and I'd just get a refund...for £20 seems like a lot of effort if I can workaround myself, cheers

Sounds good to me, be interesting to have all the info clearly laid out in one place.
Right now I am not using the tablet, as I don't want it on wifi and downloading updates in background. I have read that some firewalls can be used to block the OTA, but didn't fancy it updating if miss something.

14 Sep 17#225
You can: Side load playstore and google services. Remove ALL Amazon applications & disable OTA updates. When you go to settings>device settings> system update. The page is blank and just returns you back to the device settings options. The actual OTAVerifier service is completely uninstalled so it will never download or install OTA updates ever again. (Unless I do a fs Tory reset and reinstall the firmware)You can also completely uninstall the fire launcher and use something like nova lush her or ADW. Again completely uninstalled so it never reappears. The only glitch I have found using a different launcher. When you press the bottom right button and close ALL open apps. The screen refreshes and then takes you back to the lock screen. But this is something I can live with. If this is something you're interested in, let me know. - I spent around 3 days looking online and trying stuff out myself but there is little information on 7" 2017 & HD 8/10. However this does work on either models. - I'm going to create a thread on XDA with everything I have found and done on mine. Either before I go away or just after I return.

Sadly 5.3.2.1, which I don't think can be fettled with, other than sideloading play store.
Would be nice if nothing else to block the updates, just in case anything is found for this version.

I bought another one, rooted it and installed the vanilla android Nexus ROM...and unfortunately exactly the same problem occurs: you can't listen to Spotify and surf the net at the same time without Spotify halting.
So yeah, that's a limitation of this tablet (too little RAM?), but on the plus side the Nexus ROM is noticeably faster than Amazon OS at the moment.
EDIT: I finally ended my woes by installing the fantastic "Via" browser - it's fast and fully featured, yet at 1.66mb so tiny that Spotify can easily run alongside it. It even has a proper text-scaling feature, which is so important for this device.

Collected 16gb and appears brand new, albeit in a brown cardboard box. Version 5.3.2.1 build 1/12/16. Updated to 5.3.3.0 then updated 5.4.00
Side loaded Google account manager, Google services framework, Google play services, Google play store.
From play store installed my favorite apps and now tablet is already half full, which noticeable slows it down compared to my higher spec phones.
Installed mobdro, works fine, so happy as Larry. Alexia updated, which you can access any time by pressing the home button, middle of the three on the bottom .
Alexia records everything you say in Amazon cloud, so be aware, you are the product and privacy concerns.
With play store I down loaded Google so can now ask Google voice assistant as well.
It is a shame they are now OOS at this price as if I knew they were this good I would have bought more of them as presents.!
Word of warning do not turn on voice assessibility options on to screen read, at you peril! You cannot do anything and everything is double tap and it just reads the Button instead of activating it. It is a nightmare to get out of.
You have to with 2 fingers swipe down the screen to hopefully bring up the assessebility menu and if your lock screen is also on, then you have to with 2 fingers swipe down and to the left, first!

Has anyone had the issue when trying to go to the Amazon App Store. I put in my Amazon details but it won't sign in. I believe it is trying Amazon.com inserts of UK because when the log on fails, it says check Amazon.com for support. Tablet is configured for UK use.

oliverkennedy10
6 Sep 17#141
Make sure you are on the .3 FW
Step one: download the rom and put it on your device. I put mine in the download folder
On your device activate usb debugging and use the downgrade bat to downgrade.
Then use the supertool to gain root it will install rootking on your device run the app. Mine said no compatible but click run anyway and wait. Your device may reboot. If it does not work then reboot and try again. Once it's installed root then press any key on your pc and it will uninstall king but you still need to delete it from the fire.
One that's complete press the one to disable ota updates then press the one to download fire it will install then find the zip and install it wait and you'll have new ROM

I think you'll be OK if you're intending to read books using the kindle app.
Stuff like this website is a bit of a strain to read. The text is small and adjusting text size in the browser settings makes no difference. Everything is slightly stretched vertically when in portrait view- perhaps a result of the unusual 1024 * 600 resolution.

Needs the microSD adding to increase the memory as it soon fills. Not an iPad but for £600 cheaper its brilliant. Screen plays video in good quality. Forget how many million pixels it hasn't got. If it's the same model I bought last time they were cheap then yes, Alexa came with an update.
I put the Google store on it and have to say it's a fab little tablet. Surprised me how fast it is.
Absolute bargain at this price point.

They're probably a mix of customer returns & old stock. Warehouse deals goods can vary greatly in condition from brand new to completely battered but as it's Amazon - returns are easy.

I normally only use apple stuff (having used a lot of android stuff in the past). However, £27 16gb + a spare 128gb micro ad card I have laying around makes it fantastic for me. I'm going away in a few weeks so I wanted something cheap to take with me instead of my iPad. At this price, I'm not too bothered if it gets lost.
can anyone recommend any griffin style cases for this please?

Not entirely sure what people got working as didn't read into it, but sure I saw someone say an old phone with GPS works fine, presumably any Bluetooth or Wifi GPS should work.

+1 for the launcher suggestion. The default Amazon look is pretty unappealing (far too much 'Store' etc.), I'll give this a try.

4 Sep 17#66
This is only the 2015 Amazon Fire (I wrongly stated that it was the 2017 version), but it should be supported and kept secure with OS updates for a couple of years. The current 5.4.0.0 version is based on Android Lollipop. I imagine it'll be updated to Marshmallow unless Google have blocked access to their code somehow (I know they would want to, does anyone know)?
I think you mean mobile connectivity, rather than GPS (though the mobile
networks can figure out where their phones and dongles are).

Yes it does, I bought this in a previous deal for a relative. It takes a handful of incremental software updates....but once all up to date Alexa feature works fine on it

Thanks , I was unsure about ordering this but went with the heat and ordered two for the girls. Our iPad Air screen got damaged a month ago and honestly I'm not spending that kind of money again. Yes need a case for thisso is this the 2017 or 2015 one?
nige182
4 Sep 17#62
When I looked this up on Google on Prime Day, some people had done this, however the Fire tablet has no built in GPS so they had to add that by other means, eg, connection to phone, dongle, etc.

I don't think you can put a new ROM on these unless they are running old firmware (which I doubt). The newer firmware isn't rootable (https://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/index-amazon-fire-2015-t3210485).
I've two of these running CyanogenMod for my kids and they are great tablets for their needs but it's unlikley you'll be able to install vanilla Android on any Fire 7 Gen 5 you purchase now.

Do I need to root or need a Windows machine to get it on there? Any simple solution to get it up and running so can install any apps and also get Nova Launcher on there to make things easier.
This guide needs Windows but found this guide which can do via the device itself.
Thanks in advance.
Right now I am not using the tablet, as I don't want it on wifi and downloading updates in background. I have read that some firewalls can be used to block the OTA, but didn't fancy it updating if miss something.
Side load playstore and google services.
Would be nice if nothing else to block the updates, just in case anything is found for this version.
After, install Nova Launcher using Google Play. :sunglasses:
Also saw a news article that in US brand new Fire 8,s are being discounted. Look out for coming available in the UK.
I'll give it a few days, and if it is noticeably bad, i'll have to return it.
I tidied mine up to look more like a stock android and installed Google Play Store device by following these instructions howtogeek.com/270…id/
i mainly wanted it to run the app which lets my Echo talk to my broadlink and also for Kodi. can anyone confirm I can still do the latter items please ? Thanks
It even has a proper text-scaling feature, which is so important for this device.
great little buy, they are happy with websurfing, facebook and skype with the grandkids
receieved a 7 as ordere
Side loaded Google account manager, Google services framework, Google play services, Google play store.
From play store installed my favorite apps and now tablet is already half full, which noticeable slows it down compared to my higher spec phones.
Installed mobdro, works fine, so happy as Larry.
Alexia updated, which you can access any time by pressing the home button, middle of the three on the bottom
.
Thanks in advance.
Is that normal?
only bad point i found you cant do mirroring on this 5th gen but otherwise good voted hot good dea
I'm on 5.4 firmware, 8gb model, with Google Play Store sideloaded.
I've tried: Different browsers. Different versions of Spotify (From Amazon App store + Google Play Store). A different Spotify account. Restarting the tablet.
p.s. also spoke to some one on live chat and they removed the adverts for free
I guess I'm sunk if I want to try another ROM then, but actually I'm happy with the Amazon OS + Google Play Store so far.

What a bargain of a tablet for £23! I hated the amazon OS.
So pleased with it! Also in pristine condition. Trying to resist buying another for that steal of a price!
Put 128gb microsd card in it. Mainly use it for when I am travelling and have Netflix and prime TV installed. Use it also for storing documents and reading books. Browser ain't great, but I have the default one in it.
Wouldn't like to use without a set of headphones though, but at £30 these are a very good product.
Step one: download the rom and put it on your device. I put mine in the download folder
androidfilehost.com/?w=…493
Step two download this
rootjunkysdl.com/fil…ool
On your device activate usb debugging and use the downgrade bat to downgrade.
Then use the supertool to gain root it will install rootking on your device run the app. Mine said no compatible but click run anyway and wait. Your device may reboot. If it does not work then reboot and try again. Once it's installed root then press any key on your pc and it will uninstall king but you still need to delete it from the fire.
One that's complete press the one to disable ota updates then press the one to download fire it will install then find the zip and install it wait and you'll have new ROM
Will be putting on Google Play store and using Firefox rather than Silk for browsing
Web Pages are much easier to read now, so I'm satisfied this tablet is brilliant value!
Have managed to side load Google play but only on my profile, not the second (adult) one. I can't work out where I'm going wrong. The first three downloads install but the fourth fails each time. Any ideas?
Stuff like this website is a bit of a strain to read. The text is small and adjusting text size in the browser settings makes no difference. Everything is slightly stretched vertically when in portrait view- perhaps a result of the unusual 1024 * 600 resolution.
What's stopping me now is the last couple of comments about the screen. From what I've seen with the kids they are ok for games, tv but haven't tried any reading on them......
TBH the screen is not exactly a joy to look at- if you're going to be doing a lot of reading, I'd get something with a higher resolution. Still, it's as cheap as Android tablets get, and it's running at a decent lick, so I'm OK with it so far.
Very happy for £27
The price for the 16gb isn't dropping on checkout, how do you get it to £27.86?Scratch that, it applied on the very last screen for confirmation
