If it works like the free coffee the Starbucks near this store did, the homeless people were in the queue like everyone else. Furthermore, some people like me actually got the coffee for the big issue seller since they could not queue.

To be fair to PRET do distribute all their left over food to the homeless at the end of the working day. This involves using their own vehicles and staff to do this into the early hours. This is unlike some well known sandwich shops who don't.

Visiting Edinburgh this year - a beautiful city - I couldn't help notice many homeless men and women. Given this, wouldn't Pret do better offer those without free meals as opposed to what is likely to take place, queues of well off/comfortable individuals wanting anything for free.

of course not - those are the people Pret DOESN'T want in its store, they'll just steal stuff

Pret actually do a lot of work with charities helping the homeless and for many years have given away their unsold food at the end of a night to those in need locally and even have their own Pret Foundation Trust which offers training and jobs. But you are right in that there are a lot of homeless people in Edinburgh. I was very shocked when I visited a couple of years back and was looking around in the Calton Hill Old Burial ground cemetary and actually saw sleeping bags amongst the monuments, it's pretty sad to see people sleeping rough in stone mausoleums in a graveyard.

But, its not really free though, is it? Its payment for being part of their promotion of the new store, for the time it takes you to queue.
Not saying that it isn't worth it if you have nothing else to do at that time - but its quid pro quo.
