A great machine, at a reasonable price. I paid £199 several years ago for this (cue all the time travel comments!) so have to disagree that it's a stonking deal. Not voted.

usually drops to <£200 a few times a year, sometimes even lower, might be the cheapest available at the moment, but I certainly wouldn't call this a stonking deal.

It was 199 earlier this year, and usually gets around that at black friday/near xmas
I wouldn't buy this unless you need it now and were going to get it anyway. If you have patience, then use it and wait for a month or so.

This is an awesome machine had one for 6 months and couldn't do with out it now. If I have to go without a coffee for more than 3 hours I get all itchy and act like a meth head :joy:

Had mine for several years now without any problems. Always consistent regarding strength etc. Just keep it descaled and it will go on forever!

Here's a tip: don't let the scale get into the machine in the first place and you won't have to descale it so often.

I agree it's a great machine and well worth the money. Saying that it took me a bit to get the beans to grind right (then again I had the same problem with my last bean to cup machine) On the downside it's more noisy and smaller than the last machine.

Dont let the scale get into the machine? I dont think you understand how hard water works! The limescale isnt in chunks you can just strain out ha ha ha
definition to VaderLover

To stop limescale getting into the machine all you have to do is filter the water beforehand. Some may get in but not much.

Had one of these for about 18 months, and use it every single day. Makes lovely coffee, though here's a few tips...
Steam the milk first.
Turn it to the hottest setting
Use decent coffee. (Ive found Starbucks Guatemala bean coffee is really nice)
Get a cheap milk thermometer so you can get the milk to the right temp (60-70c)

I have never got the hang of using the steam to froth milk, can't get the hang of it. Beginning to think there's something wrong with it as I didn't have the same problem on the last bean to cup machine I owned.
peanutkp to definition
30 Sep 17 #21
I take the cover off the pannarello wand, then only just dip the tip of the wand into the milk till you get to the right temp using a thermometer. With a bit of practice and you can get a much better micro foam for lattes etc. If you keep the cover on then the foam will be just too airy which might only be okay for cappuccinos. I've had my machine for about a year now and I can't fault it apart from the noise.
Chz to definition

Apologies if you already know this.
I've seen more than a few people online who weren't aware that you must push the button (next to the espresso ones) for steam, wait for it to finish its noisy clunking about, and *then* turn the steam on. If you just turn the knob for steam while it's in coffee mode, you're only going to get hot water and it will never froth milk.

I also have one of these, and love it. As others have said, it's not the *best* deal when you look at the prices all year long but it's £20 less than I paid and I waited months for it to hit £260. That being said, if Tesco still has the 2800 for £199 then buy that. They're the same machine, no matter what some people may think. The 4200 is NOT a double boiler. These machines don't even have boilers - they're thermocoils.

I ended up pulling the big plastic part of the steam wand off, and just using the thin plastic part inside it, it makes much nicer seamed milk without all the froth. Just warm the milk with the very tip until its body temp, then plunge it to the bottom until hot. makes a lovely latte.
uptoyou to definition
30 Sep 17 #34
If you place the steam nozzle just under the surface of the milk and move it around slowly and just below the surface doing the same you should get a nice head of frothy milk. Keep moving down below your froth, layer by layer so to speak.....When you just submerge the nozzle from the start, all you are doing is heating up the milk with a few bubbles here and there.....

Turn what to the hottest setting? I have one of these and I'm not aware of any temperature setting - am I missing something?

BTW I doubt it'll go as cheap as £199 again given the state of the Pound. So I reckon it's a good deal at this price.
LionelRichieFan to Dodge62
30 Sep 17 #29
it was 199 before xmas, which is after after brexit, when the pound was 1.20-1.25 to USD and now it is ~1.34, considerably stronger.

This october/november I expect it to do the same, or atleast considerably lower than 240

If you read the manual, there is a way of setting the water temperature and water hardness. It involves pressing and holding some buttons at startup IIRC.

I've had this machine for over two years and its still going strong and making great coffee. I wouldn't be without it now. The tips I've picked over the years are :

1. Pre heat the cup / mug to avoid the coffee going luke warm quickly (a common complaint).
2. On a similar vein - double skinned (thermal) coffee glasses are great for keeping the coffee hot.
3. Take some time adjusting the settings in the first week to get the best tasting coffee - once done you won't need to do this again. Similarly adjust the strength and size of cup (the dials on the front) so that you get the perfect sized cup and strength for you.
4. Use filtered water to fill the machine.
5. Keep some descaler in stock so that you are prepared when the machine requests a descale !
6. Give it a good clean every so often (the manual explains the key bits to clean)
7. Use fresh coffee beans if possible (it does take ground coffee as well but it is a lot messier feeding it in cup by cup than beans )
8. Explore a few different coffees - its surprising how soon you get to notice all the subtle differences between them !

With the machine in standby/off mode, press and hold the One cup button until the row of lights come on below. You should see the default of 2 lights is showing. Now press the two cup button repeatedly to select your desired setting out of a possible 4 settings. When set, press the 1 cup button again to save your setting, and the machine will go back to off.

I got one for 10 pounds less on Amazon around black Friday last year. It's a good machine. Re the milk foaming, it's got the delonghi plastic attachment which makes it easier to make a thick foam, but to my mind you'll never get espresso art from it because by the time the milk's hot, it's too thick and gloopy. I tried one of the Sage by Heston machines before this and I couldn't get on with the foaming at all. This machine makes it easy to get a good foam if you clean the plastic attachment properly, but if you were expecting a barista style finish you may be disappointed. Final observation... If you save 3 coffees a week from your local coffee shop, the machine's paid for itself in less than a year. So waiting for black Friday may not be worth it.

Chz to buufalo

Adjusting for inflation, you paid £270 (probably more, this year's inflation's spiked quite a bit). This is cheaper. What's the issue? It's not a PC, there's no funky new technology in coffee machines that makes this obsolete. For home machines, it pretty much *is* state-of-the-art.

Bought one last year on the Black Friday deal. It broke down a couple of months ago. Collected and returned within 2 weeks by DeLonghi so nothing wring wit their service and the machine works well again.

I bought one last Black Friday too, worked great until July, milk frother started squealing and it stopped foaming the milk. Sent it back to delonghi got it returned with “no fault found”. Sent it back again (after a rather angry phone call) and it returned minus the squeal, but the milk foam isn’t as it was it bubble rather than layers as it used to. Can’t be bothered sending back again as you can’t speak to any of the engineers to explain the problem and it goes away for a couple weeks at a time....and yes it had been de scaled at correct intervals.

I bought one of these about 3 years ago, I thought it was great. We changed the layout of the kitchen a bit and I realised that it was taking up a bit too much space so I bought one of these
amazon.de/dp/…PO/
it was much cheaper at the time,
It was a complete revelation. everyone noticed and commented on how good the coffee tasted. Now, I have no idea why it should be so different, but it undoubtedly is

Bear in mind that I was completely satisfied with the Delonghi.

I sold the three-rear old Delonghi for within £30 of what I paid for it all that time ago. The Delonghi is great, this deal price is great too. It might not make the best-tasting coffee but then you might not know it anyway.

Bought one of these via ebay last year - £175.00; great machine and gives you a load of different settings depending on your own preferences. My favourite is Ethiopan coffee - wonderfully smooth taste  . As mentioned - descale regularly - preferably before the warning light on the machine lights up and it'll last for ages.

Are people voting hot for the item or the price? Just a bit confused as it's been cheaper many times before?
stevep94 to Sunni
1 Oct 17 #45
That may be true but if it's the cheapest by far at the moment, then by definition it's a hot deal isn't it? So unless you a) have a time machine or b) a crystal ball, I'd argue that this is a good price for what appears to be a very good coffee machine!

5 Oct 17 #47
I own one I keep in my office at work, thinking about getting another one for at home... because the coffee it makes is just so damn good.

Fantastic machine. Mine gets hammered (everyone in the office is always after coffee from me) and doesn't miss a beat.

I find the best coffee is made by using decent espresso beans (the espresso bit is most important), dialing down the water volume, upping the strength and using the resulting espresso shots to make an americano or a latte.

Always worth checking if you have a local coffee roaster. Most areas do and you can get coffee far superior to Starbucks or Costa for the same or less money.
