I do not understand the big deal with Costco, where you pay membership to buy overpriced goods and some brands are unknown. In most cases high street is cheaper, am I missing something?

What is overpriced?
m4rky2011 to walsall123
27 Sep 17 #10
Yes you are missing the point, I agree you do have to pay a yearly fee but a lot of stuff is really well priced, they often have special offers and the quality of the meat fish etc is very high, they have a great returns policy especially with electrical good and they will price match! And the best but you can get a jacket spud with 2 toppings for £1.50 :raised_hand:
caverncity to m4rky2011

But you dont need to pay a membership to get the spud and toppings for £1.50 anyone can buy it just go in the exit straight to the cafe. Chilli jacket is the best.

Never been stopped. I have had two memberships but cancelled both as always spent £80 on nothing I wanted and always preferred to head for the cafe instead to get spud and chilli and cake. Tried going in once and wasn't stopped so carried on, been doing it for years. I have seen many people queuing up for take outs so not sure if they have membership as they come straight to the cafe then go out. Anyway if I get stopped I'll just say looking into getting a membership. I'm thinking of getting another seen as it's £18 as miss the Danish cakes.

27 Sep 17 #43
I have found costco getting steadily less price competitive over the years and you need to buy things in large quantity. So I binned my membership cos' I was struggling to find stuff to buy. Also electricals (e.g. TV) can be bought cheaper elsewhere. The petrol / diesel is cheap though... but not enough for me.

I've never noticed that at Watford, but the guys on the exit who pretend to check the items in your trolley against the receipt will sometimes challenge people walking in the exit if they are not busy pretending to check the items in the trolley.

It's happened to me, finished shopping, put wife in cafe queue and go out to car to put the shopping in the boot, then went back to join the wife in the cafe and get challenged walking in the exit.
androoski
27 Sep 17 #45
Costco can work out very well, you have to know your prices and only pick up the stuff that really is good value and you actually need. I go there and pick up very specific items only, and only after I've checked elsewhere for deals on them.
They have a lot of foreign and USA brands that you can't get elsewhere and generally Kirkland branded stuff is good quality. They also have size of packs that are aimed at caterers and can't be found easily outside wholesalers.

We've calculated that our membership which is shared cost with others, pays for itself many times over.

Not to mention all the eating that you can do from the free samples around the place.
kitana8
27 Sep 17 #46
I wouldn't say Costco is cheap but quality of products especially food is beyond that in supermarkets so well worth it and good prices on Tropicana  fuel always cheap but that alone would t make it worth it in a year.

Worth noting that all electrical bought in Costco gives 2 year warranty so like John Lewis plus just take it back and then replace on spot. Bought TV for a friend an it decided to go funny on the last month of warranty so took it back and they replaced with latest model no questions asked and another 2 year warranty. Depends how you value the warranty though. Just my 2 cents

You'll sometimes find the same item cheaper elsewhere but so what, the point is do you save enough money to warrant the membership cost and in my experience - definitely. But I also like the peace of mind buying from Costco, most items come with a 90 day satisfaction guarantee, if you don't like it for whatever reason, in the first 90 days they will give you a full refund, it doesn't have to be faulty

I noticed that the T&Cs have the standard Costco membership stipulations of having to work in certain industries. I don't work in any of these and wondered whether anyone else has joined without being in one.

Here's what is says:

Membership is only available for those employed in a range of different industries including IT, Finance and many others. Qualified professionals such as Doctors and Accountants are also eligible.

Just about to renew membership for the 10th year in a row I believe - alas new members only.

Yo have to be careful with costco - lots of things, even when on special, are more expensive than elsewhere. That said there are a lot of bargains and as mentioned the quality of the fresh meats is excellent - far better than my local butcher.

Baconaise and cheese btw.

You can get a membership if you don't qualify due to profession. To do this you would have to go to Costco with someone who is a member and ask to be added onto their account. It actually works out cheaper that way. £19

27 Sep 17 #61
On the flip side I've bought 2 of them over the years and both have been a good bit cheaper at Costco.

It's simple with Costco you have to be more selective with purchases nowadays with so much competition but you can easily get your money back over the year, especially if you have a family.

There are obvious people who are a typical case of sour grapes. They don't see or are not aware of difference between Asda/Morrisons groceries and Costco fresh produce. I use Tesco and Costco both for fresh produce, poultry, chilled, frozen, dry cupboard items, sports nutrition supplements, occasional home improvement, car cleaning and accessories. I can vouch for their quality and price. There fresh produce are class A, which Asda and Morrisons doesn't sell. You eat and can tell the difference in quality. If you buy electrical or electronic goods, 5 year warranty which neither Tesco nor John Lewis provide (except for tele or selective AV items).
Leonintelex
27 Sep 17 #70
Due my renewal this month but I just don't think it is worth paying a membership for.

In my opinion it's just a supermarket where sometimes you get good offers but in most cases it's the same price as elsewhere. Some prices are also massively inflated and cheaper when bought individually.

To date the only things I can think of that saved me money was Kirkland water and tassimo coffee pods. But I definitely haven't made my £28 back with only 4 days left on my membership.

27 Sep 17 #71
Do yourself a favour and install the mysupermarket app on your phone and use it in the store to compare as Costco prices are not always cheaper per kilo or litre

On the plus side the free samples are always a nice touch and the cakes section is pretty good. As is the cafe and the chopped tinned tomatoes work out about 30p and are better than most. Cheap fuel is always a bonus, and some do cheap tyres but always compare with black circles etc...

I go with a friend so don't pay for membership, as with most things in life it's worth it for some but not for others.

Have been stopped both on entry and asked for membership at the cafe when paying numerous times. I think it depends when you go and to which ones. For example Reading do a lot of checks on match days (parking/entry/cafe), Watford seem to do them around lunch time and Southall often check on entry and sometimes at cafe.

I do have membership btw. But have seen people without being pushed straight to the membership queue which is at the front entrance so unlikely to get lunch in that case.

And yes the Danish are excellent, just too many of them so must resist

Clearly you are missing something, DONT buy the stuff thats "overpriced", simples!

Whilst most things may not be cheaper (or may even be more expensive then elsewhere), some things being cheaper is all it takes. Staples such as Olive Oil, Lavaza Coffee beans, Toilet Paper and Kitchen Towel for example are consistently "cheap" making it a worthwhile trip every month or two. Which then covers our membership (I give the second free card to my parents).

The "unknown" brands are actually better then most of the "known" brands. The quality of their frozen produce is a notch above. As is the quality of their meat (although we try to buy free range which restricts us). They also do items you won't easily find in supermarkets and definitely to a significantly higher quality. Dim Sum for example.

The fruit and veg whilst usually not cheaper is Class A. In season stuff is often competitively priced, in which case you're getting significantly better produce for the same price as our supermarkets knock out inferior produce.

And then there's the customer service. Better then any other "retailer" including John Lewis. Its so good I fear the piss takers will force them to start being meaner. I've seen people turn up with products they bought years ago and get a swap out. You get 90 days virtually no quibble returns, 2 years warranty on most things and 5 years on TV's and some big appliances. And they can be competitive, for example on the 2016 LG 65E6 they were the cheapest many times.

28 Sep 17 #88
I would say at this price with the voucher and freebies included is definitely worth it. You just have to know what to buy from there.

As others have said petrol is always cheaper, the meat is not necessarily cheap but excellent quality. The bakery and cafe products are excellent too.

Staples I usually get from there which I find good quality/value are washing up powder/liquid, packs of tinned/chopped tomatoes, teabags (generally when on special offer), potato wedges, Greek Yoghurt, sausages, and the rotisserie chickens from there are unbeatable in my opinion.

i always keep my eye on the monthly specials (you can get a brochure in store which shows the products they have discounted), often (but worth remembering not always!) the items on special work out at good value.

Costco is good for us, we buy all our babies' nappies from there (I know Aldi nappies are cheaper but they're rubbish despite what Mumsnet says!). It's a good point you raise. We have CostCo membership and its debatable as to whether its worth it. With the recent supermarket wars in the last decade or so, it is much more of an intense issue which is why CostCo is resorting to Groupon.

Somethings CostCo does best all the time like when toilet tissue is on offer (40 x branded loo rolls for £10 is very good). Others, like Pampers nappies, they have good offers, but not the best compared to when ASDA has offers on large packs or Boots coincides it with and offer and points events.

Fresh veg is good, but not really cheaper. You can get larger items, e.g. larger apples, but whether they are higher quality is debatable and also because they don't put best before dates on, how good it is really depends on how old it is as you take the next one available.

One area they provide good value is large childrens birthday cakes which are massive, are personalised and for around £14. Anywhere else, and it would be £30+ really.

Meat is good value especially if you buy in large packs. Anything where restaurants might buy in bulk sort of thing tends to lean towards better value.

Nice free food to taste whilst walking around.

But overall, its no longer clear to say that its worth shopping at CostCo. Savvy shopping use things like mySupermarket app/website to compare prices and go to a couple of supermarkets to get cheapest branded stuff and if they want to ALDI/LIDL for other items - in those situations there is no way that CostCo compares on value when you're benefiting from all offers in all supermarkets.

Where CostCo can shine is that the supermarkets sell largely the same stuff in all of them and CostCo can sell different stuff - quite nice on the run up to Xmas etc.

So we like it and yes there is value in some items (we largely go for loo rolls and we like the restaurant) but whether its worth it for most people just looking for value - I'm not so sure.

The Groupon offer includes a £14 voucher, free rotisserie chicken, batteries and fudge cake. So I think its about £30-35 of free stuff and £35 of membership. So the £72 is maybe not right, but its at least £60 of "value" in the package. Its not far off a £14 voucher and 3 items free with your first membership.
