Regularly voted one of the best beers in the world and a true Trappist product (brewed by monks) "Chimay Blue 9%" is a timeless classic beer founded in 1862. While the supermarket shelves are awash with "craft beer", many of the small breweries making these beers have been/are being acquisitioned by the huge multinational brewing companies (e.g. Millercoors) which is bad for craft brewing.
Chimay Blue is the ultimate in craft beer and is a delicious full bodied lightly carbonated strong dark ale full of dried plum, raisin, date flavours and is yeasty with a great fruit coffee, chocolate aroma.
Put some away for Christmas!

Great beer, one of the best sold in supermarkets, that's for sure. I wish they stocked the Tripel.

Nah. Waitrose and Ocado sell better trappist beers, they also sell Tripel Karmeliet too. Chimay blue is nice but it's too syrupy in my opinion.

Do you mean the blonde Chimay? It's delicious and Westmalle blonde is a good alternative if you find it.

I can understand the cold votes. It's more than most folk are willing to spend on a beer but it is a very different product to pretty much every single other beer on the shelf in the supermarket. IIRC Chimay are one of only 7 brewers in the world (6 of which are Belgian) that are licenced Trappist brewers and the monks who make this beer do so on a tiny scale.

yep I love the beer but hate the price - 33cl after all

Its 9% though, not likely to find it in a pint bottle.

Maybe not in pints but you can get it in 750ml and 3 litre bottles.
Decent beer though, a bit on the sweet side when fresh but it improves greatly if cellared for 3-5 years (if you can avoid temptation for that long).

This probably isn't a beer for people like you then. I'm sure there's a good deal on Fosters at Asda.

You do realise this is 9% beer that doesn't taste like dishwater?

Thankfully you can get Westmalle in waitrose etc. This is a quad right? I'm partial to a dubbel, although I had a lovely quadrupel recently - Kasteel Donker (11%): ratebeer.com/bee…05/
I've got some Chimay red but I think I was a little dissapointed, probably because I expected so much.
Prefer a Gimbergen dubbel - but may be too sweet for some - I like my beer like Christmas cake - sweet, fruity and boozy.
Anyway, £2.12 for a Chimay is great value in the UK, even if you can get it for a Euro at an average supermarket on the mainland!
I think it's around £3.50 or more at Waitrose.

Chimay blue is a quad the Chimay white is their tripel and the red is their dubbel, the red is quite poor and is nothing like the blue. Chimay has the flavour profile you describe as your favoured kind. Chimay Blue isn't €1 for a bottle in Belgium it is more like €1.70-€1-80 and you have to pay €0.10 compulsory bottle deposit. There's a website called belgiuminabox.com that deliver to uk for €7.00 for 43x330ml bottles of whatever you like which is a great way to get access to a fantastic range of Belgian and world beers. Their case price for Chimay Blue is €49.99 plus about €0.16 per bottle for delivery which works out at £2.05 at the current exchange rate if you have a Halifax clarity card so £2.12 per bottle is reall good considering you can just pop out to buy some and you only need to buy 4. I have some of them £3 off £30 vouchers Tesco send in the post so mine will cost about £1.90 each.
You said you like Westmalle blonde which is a 9% Quadrupel and that is my favourite blond it is great and I think they have it in Waitrose. Tesco have the Westmalle dubbel which is dark and 7% and is quite a different style to the Chimay Blue, it has a thinner mouthfeel higher carbonation and a bit cola like, not one of my favourites but at £2.10 in Tesco (£1.68 after 20% off) it's worth trying.
I will be stocking up on Chimay Blue and Duvel and putting them away for Christmas and I might order a box of 43 mixed bottles from belgiuminabox as a xmas prezzie to myself to try some new beers. I have a stash of 20 or so bottles saved over the past couple of years that I have been aging in my garage that contain the best beers available like westvleteren 12, struise tsjeeses reserva (both port and bourbon barrel versions), struise pannepot 2011 grand reserva, Struise XXXX Quadrupel, sint Bernardus Christmas Ale, Carlous Christmas ale and a few others. If you really love your Belgian bottle conditioned beers it's well worth aging a few because they continue to develop and ripen for several years. By the way going off the style you like Rochefort 10 is the best of all and is my favourite
Also I've had kasteel donker it's nice but by far the best beer from kasteel is the barrista chocolate quad and it should be on your shopping list!

Why is this a hot deal? Is the item being sold at a special price or is it just an advertisement for some beer the OP likes?

This is a fantastic beer from one of my favourite breweries. Glad it's now appearing in the UK more widely. Worth the price (although it's about half that on the Continent).

Love this stuff xxx my heart skips a beat when I see it for sale and my wallet seems to jump out of my trousers!
Best beer and decent value I've ever had is Weheinstephaner dunkel Dark wheat by beer by the self proclaimed oldest brewery in the world. Can be bought from Waitrose for a bit north of £2
Might try this, cheers. Syrupy sounds good!

I meant Westmalle dubbel - I think they're more known for their dubbel? That's what I see more anyway.
I don't tend to drink blonde or trippel.
Not a huge fan of duvel - not sure boozy works when it isn't dark.
Found the boozyness in the Kasteel pleasant, while in the Duvel I more put up with it I think.
I do like fresh beers too, anything low on hops. Although dragon stout is taking it too far in lack of hops and sweetness - Jamaicans love their sweet drinks.
Yeah I saw that chocolate quad when searching, will have to try it. Sounds amazing.
I finally had some samuel smith's organic chocolate stout which was amazing the first time I drank it - another bottle another time less so for some reason (maybe drank it too cold).
That's good to know about the bottle conditioning. The Kasteel I drank was a couple of years old. Bought that, Orval, all the trappists beers I could when on the continent and took them back in my suitcase on the flight. Didn't take too many given space limitations and wasn't sure about the pressure - but they didn't explode
Guess it's just Chimay red that's around 1 euro then. Makes sense that blue would cost more.
Will try these, cheers OP
