Good price and great headphones. I bought these just before a 10 hour flight and couldn't believe how well the noise cancelling worked.

Although with the new model out, maybe we can expect lower prices in the coming weeks?

Heat for the deal. Was going to get a pair of these until I read the reviews stating that although the sound is good they pale compared to sony or sennheiser. Was going to get the sony but they DO have build issues. Opted for AKG in the end but a part of me really wanted these Bose and still does!

Bought a couple of tellies from RGB in Loughton back in the day, including my last CRT a 28 inch Sony and first ever flat panel a 32 inch 'HD ready'' Panasonic around 12 years ago so I'd have it ready for Sky HD and Germany 2006 the following year.

Very fond memories of a decent retailer back then, alas they're Euronics now :disappointed: shame

These are great at ANC but don't even come close to the 1000x for sound quality and even better ANC and feature set.

Sounds like if you haven't got an android phone the new model is pointless.

Going to try these and the Sony's next week and if it's close I'll get the most comfortable pair and judging by the reviews that's the Bose.

Just for those on the fence about the bose vs sony, I tried both and spent nearly two hours in Dixons trying them both, constantly swapping between the two! Probably looked like a bit of a prat to be fair...

The Sonys are amazing, sound quality and ANC are superb. The feature to just place your hand on the ear cup to pause the music and let outside sound in is simply genius.

However, I went for the Bose. Sound quality is also superb, and ANC is fantastic... I could barely tell the difference although I think the Sonys were ever so marginally better.

What sold me on the bose was that the inside of the ear cups are angled, which means the tips of your ears don't touch anything, whereas the Sonys are flat like most ear cups, so my ears, especially the tips, were touching the inside of the cups. Only very slightly, but it did make a difference, for me anyway, and I have small ears! My ears got a bit hot, and were less comfortable even after short periods.

The bose is also a bit lighter, the travel case is a bit more compact, and you won't have to put up with the worry about the dreaded issue of the band developing a crack.

I think anyone comparing the two would be more than happy with either set though. I almost went for the Sonys because of the touch feature, it was a tough decision.

This is a cracking price... Wish I'd waited!

ANC is crap, I have them and they don't block much out at all. You'll still hear people talking, you'll still hear cars and machinery.... only seems to block out low pitched drones. The sound quality is also just okay... nothing special and the highs really hurt the ears, they are so harsh.

I would not recommend them and you hear the Plastic creek with is annoying. I'd also say stay away from the Sony's as they are so uncomfortable, if you want to wear the headphones for hours at a time... the Sony's just aren't an option.

I'm interested in trying the new Beats, I loved the feel of the Studio Wireless 2's, but the ANC sucked worse than the bose and the audio wasn't anything special either.

Guys, for those of you who are comparing these Bose headphones to the Sony mdr 1000x model may be pleased to know that the 1000x have been redesigned and updated to an even newer model the WH-1000XM2. They have just been released by Sony and going off the initial reviews, they are fairly hard to beat. They are on amazon roughly the same price as the 1000x (£325) , for those that are interested !

I bought a pair of the new Sony M2 in the US last week and they are stunning. I extensively trialled both the 1000X and these Bose in a Best Buy out there, using my own audio sources (just Spotify on my phone) and found the Sony better in every way....and the M2s are even better still, so personally I'd get them, but £60 is a big of a difference in price, and the Bose are still good value.

30 hour battery life on the new M2s too, nearly double the 1000x.

Bought these from Amazon.de and was charged £263 after £ to € conversion. Cancelled the order this morning and bought these instead - £4 cheaper and from the UK. It was a toss up between these and the MDR1000X's, but went for these because I'll primarily use them for work; that means I'll be using them 8 hours+ a day so for me comfort is more important than sound quality and ANC.

They only had them in Best Buy out there - I got them day one! Worked out at about £270 all in, so a bit of a saving on what they will be here. Not massive difference in sound quality, though it is slightly better, but the battery life is a game-changer for me, also they seem less likely to have the band cracking issue the previous ones had. They were an absolute boon on the airplane!

Worth considering they will have no warranty if you buy them States-side, so I'm taking a bit of a risk, but hey ho.
TonyP72
24 Sep 17 #44
If there's a significant difference in comfort I'll go with the Bose, everyone seems to say they're the best out there. Too many headphones seem to rely on clamping pressure to help block out outside noise.
What's the point in having great sounding cans if you can only wear them for short periods?, I recently sold a fantastic pair of Oppo PM3's because of the discomfort, I won't be making that mistake again.

I've always flown with the in ear wired quietcomfort 20's. On my last flight to the states I borrowed by wife's qc35's because my son had disappeared with my earphones. I have to admit I was amazed how good they were (I normally really dislike overear cans). Noise cancellation was just as good as the in ear set and I was watching the films at minimum volume (BA flight). They stayed on when I dropped off as well, which was a bonus. Sound quality for me (a non audiophile) was spot on, but most of all they effectively cut out a lot of the annoying rubbish that can make flying almost unbearable. I would buy a pair without hesitation, also they worked well for calls and pair with your phone by NFC which makes them easy to use.

Have some heat for a great price. I have both these and the wired 25s.

I wasted loads of money on cheaper cans over the years. These make traveling so much easier. Often I use them just for noise cancelling, as well as tunes.
garryallen
24 Sep 17 #69
As someone who owns the new model you couldn't be more wrong. The build quality is improved, and the battery life doubled, which alone would point to them not being rebrands. I demoed all 3 extensively and the M2s sound the best and offer the better noise cancelling. As to comfort, as mentioned before, the Bose offer bigger openings so envelop the ear more, whereas the Sonys seem to be more the same size as your ears, so sit on them a little more snuggly, so it will likely boil down to personal preference.

They are all excellent phones for the money though. The battery life increase and slightly improved sound quality puts the M2 in the lead though, for me, and they are plenty comfortable (wore them for pretty much an entire 9 hour flight last week)

Heat for the price but i had a bad experience with a set i bought and had to take them back after 1 week which i thought was shocking for a brand like Bose. Didn't dare take the risk of another set for the same to happen, couldn't knock the quality of them when they did work though

Can anyone comment on lag with video or games between the QC35 and the Sonys? It seems that the QC35 has problems with Bluetooth lag in recent firmwares. I would use them mainly for watching video, and I'm pretty sensitive to out-of-sync sound. I currently have Audio Technicas, which have great sound quality, but not the best ANC and no Bluetooth,
rev6
24 Sep 17 #83
Can you adjust audio sync with the video player? Workaround of course.
garryallen
24 Sep 17 #84
Yes I believe so. That or leave them paired to a Bluetooth device and have it set to pause. That also works if you don't want the cable plugged in.
painty
24 Sep 17 #85
You're missing the point. I'm not talking about the update for the bose. I'm talking about the 1000-xm2. The design and build is the same. They have tweaked the 1000 but the materials and design are exactly the same as the previous model therefore will have the same inherent build quality flaws as the predecessor. I'm not arguing that sound wise they are excellent but the very fact that a large number of consumers all experienced the same issue with them breaking around the same area put me off completely.
painty
24 Sep 17 #86
I stand corrected then. Clearly a headset that is designed in the same way, manufactured in the same way and built with the same materials will clearly be better quality....I hope yours last longer than the average but I would keep hold of that receipt if I were you.

24 Sep 17 #89
Mostly you can delay the sound but not the video, so that doesn't help.
rev6
24 Sep 17 #90
Then offset the audio forward so it's ahead of the video?
Dodge62
24 Sep 17 #91
They don't provide negative delay. In any case, from the reports it sounds like the lag is quite variable, so even if there was a way to delay the video (or negatively delay the sound) it wouldn't be an effective solution.
fisa002
24 Sep 17 #92
Totally agree. Reading the reviews online they all state the cups are different and the materials and build quality appears different. The styling is 'similar'. He still fails to respond as to why this makes them 'crap'. Each to their own opinion but don't just go off what u see in pictures and form a baseless opinion unless you have physically tried and tested both.
Naqvi
24 Sep 17 #93
It definately isn't. I've had both. The battery lasts 10 hours longer for a start!

25 Sep 17 #94
Far from "crap sound". The sound quality on these is brilliant. The Sony ones are great sound too, so to describe the sound on either of these as "crap" is just click bait or tempting a response. And lucky you, you got one. Enjoy your day my little troll hero.

If you want great quality, noise cancelling headphones, grab a bargain with these. Unless you absolutely NEED Google Assistant in your life, opt for the cheaper QC35 I's.
terencetcf
25 Sep 17 #95
This is how I felt after some listening sessions:

Design
QC35 looks more compact, seems lighter and overall seems smaller on your head. 1000x, i like the leather cup, seems a bit heavier and overall size looks bigger on head.

Comfort
QC35 certainly is more comfortable than 1000X after long session, but not the most comfortable i ever wore.

Sound
For me QC35 the sound quality is just okay, not too bad, not great either, sound like just like a pair of £50-100 wired headphone. The 1000X sound quality is better, but still a bit distance away from high-end wired headphone. For this category, definitely 1000X wins hands down. Please note if you want to get best SQ from Sony, make sure you use LDAC with good source.

Noise cancelling
Draw, some may prefer one or the other, depend on your ears

Other features
There are certainly quite a lot more features with 1000X, but QC35 has 2 years warranty.

Conclusion:
- If you can barely hear the different of good or pair SQ headphones, get which ever is cheaper
- If you want comfort, go for QC35
- If you want good SQ, ANC, wireless, go for 1000X
- If you want best SQ and cheaper headphone, go for wired headphone, lots of good brands out there: Sennheiser, B&O, Beyerdnaymic, AKG, Audio Technica, etc....

25 Sep 17 #100
Got these when they were £289. As others have said, fantastic headphones and ANC, if you use everyday, the comfort is excellent. The fact that they are so expensive means they better be damn good. I was also on the fence with the Sony's and in the end, the lightness and comfort won over me instead of the marginally better quality of sound on the Sony. Also the call quality is horrendous on the Sony compared to the Bose. Using the Bose, the other person doesnt even know you're on a headset...

The Sony WH1000XM2 look great. The originals were always regarded as giving better audio so with better battery life and improved noise cancellation, they are going to sell well.

Was just watching this review and the guy said that you cannot connect the earphones to multiple devices. I'd be keen on using them with my laptop during the day and then switching to my phone later. To do that you need to manually disconnect and then reconnect to the other device. That sounds like a real pain.

Hopefully they can fix that in an update.

26 Sep 17 #111
Yep it is inconvenient. You don't have to pair the other device each time though. E.g. I use mine with a Mac and an iPhone. I go into settings in my phone and click disconnect then just click connect to them on my Mac. it is two processes and you don't have to put the headphones into seek mode or anything.

What is odd though is you can connect two mobiles to the same pair, but can use one for calls and one for music, so I'm guessing it is a hardware limitation. One thing it does mean is that the connection is rock solid - with my AirPods I sometimes had connection dropping out but with the Sonys I have listened for hours without a single issue.

Anyway this is off-topic. The Bose are fine, fine headphones and anyone buying them will be happy, especially at this price.
TonyP72
26 Sep 17 #112
Just spent an hour in John Lewis comparing the Bose and Sony (both MK1's), was made even easier as they were next to each other. Every time I thought the Sony's sounded better I'd quickly switch and play the same part of the track, only to discover I couldn't hear a difference. Both have great NR and the Sony's gesture control was very handy.
I must admit the Sony's were more comfortable than I was expecting but when you put them on straight after the Bose you realise just how soft and comfortable the Bose are, that was enough to swing it for me.
Price matched on the spot and wearing them now.......happy chappy.

Picked up today from Waitrose (price matched from John lewis). Superb pair of headphones!

Also known as ikey, quick click, pressy...
I wouldn't bother getting an expensive one for this purpose. Get a cheapish one off ebay but select location as "UK only" otherwise you will be waiting 1-2 months to get it delivered from China. be wary about the snug fit though. You might need nails to get the thing out again. the ikey I got has a bit of a lip so isn't so difficult to remove.

Mine just arrived from RGB this morning (ordered Tuesday). Husband happy as I will no longer steal his on flights!

I contacted JL for a price match, I have to buy the product at full price and then they will refund me the difference, is this the normal procedure?

Ordered and got OOS email from RGB. How to price match at JL?
smithywill
28 Sep 17 #129
Yeah that's how they do it.
ALav
28 Sep 17 #130
Yes I think that's their standard procedure for online purchases. It's my first price match with them too. I think when you receive the item you contact them and they refund the difference between original price with JL and the matched price

Yes, they should give you a case number (will be in the email if you did it online) that you need to quote when you've received them.
Alternatively they do it on the spot in store and charge you the RGB price of £259 there and then.

For those still interested, John Lewis Newcastle price matched this with no issue at all for me yesterday evening.

Thanks OP.

Sent an email to JL and got a reply within the hour, took the email to the local store and they matched without issue.

Wanted to return these because they gave me a headache after 15 minutes. The ANC felt really weird - especially in quiet environments. I e-mailed RGB Direct and they replied saying for hygienic reasons they can't accept returns.

Anyone had any problems with this? Didn't know they couldn't be returned or I wouldn't have bought them from there.
