Three's rates are very cheap but their network coverage is very patchy to say the least. We binned them as there was never any network coverage at home or work in a normal, busy suburban location. EE/Plusnet has been the nest bet for signal strength.

That's my usual usage, I am the unpaid IT support dept for a few older relatives. That takes most of my talk-time, luckily it's not too frequent. Plus I tether now and again when the broadband was down at my old house.
I wasn't aware of 321, but looks like I'll be a customer real soon, those rates are brilliant.

Thanks, I didn't notice this. They disconnect your number abruptly after 120 days without topup - that makes them really less attractive in any case.

Scrub them. Although their credit remains as long as the account is active, they require a topup at least every 120 days and their website says the minimum topup is £10, so unlikely to suit a "very very small" user.

the issue with these china phones is their generally pretty poor build quality and consequent lack of longetivity (xiaomi is probably the only real exception) and bad user experience rather than raw specs. couple that with a lack of warranty, makes it a unappealing proposition for me. IMO what's the point of a phone, even at £30, if you have to bin it after 6-12 months

As this is a dual sim phone you could fill one of your slots with a Three Sim. Just by registering the Sim you get 200MB data completely free every month. There is only 1 caveat, you must send 1 text or make one paid call every 6 months. You could just order another Sim but I just topped up £10 and set a reminder in my calendar for every 6 months. That £10 will last a very long time.
You can then fill the other Sim with whatever network that offers the best deal. As I send <500 texts each month and make a few calls, I use GiffGaff but you can pick whatever network offers the best rates for a simple PAYG. I get by on £5 PM whereas before I was spending £10.
200MB is great for the odd Facebook, Email, Twitter etc. check but Three send you a text when your data is about to run out. In this case I just swop over to my 100MB on GiffGaff but if you haven't topped up then just run the data dry and use Wifi.
It's also important to download as much as you can over wifi. I got caught out last month when I played the Wordscape game several times which had video ads. I used up my Three free data last month this way.

I think every PAYG deal requires you to have _some_ activity in 6 months: cable.co.uk/gui…iry If you don't use your PAYG SIM at all for 6 months in a row they will cancel it and your number will be given away. I'd set a reminder in my calendar to make sure I send a text (or so) every 4 months.
Three or ID Mobile should be cheaper than giffgaff (3 2 1 tariff). There's also 1pmobile, which is incredibly cheap (1p per min/text/mb).
I've had a 12 month 12GB data sim (three, £25/year) as my main SIM, which works ok if you only do voip calls. The customer service may need some time to understand when asking for a PAC code, though.

Honestly, this phone has the best standby of any phone I have ever had (first iPhone I have had, usually an android or blackberry user). You can leave it overnight and it'll only drop 1-2%.
It all goes downhill unfortunately when you're using it, soon as that screen is on you can almost watch the battery drain.
I'd say around 140% gets me through a day with a top up around 15:00 for half an hour. Charging is really fast though, I just wouldn't expect it to last a full day with heavy use.
If you're a sporadic user you could probably get two days out of this easy, if you're using safari, YouTube, hukd etc (I don't have Facebook or Instagram) and you're using them for more than a few hours - expect a top up midday.
I'm going to be selling soon and going for the Sony XZ1 Compact based purely on battery-life. iOS is simplistic but it just works, I don't think this phone has crashed once since I bought in March... the battery life though is disappointing.
If iOS or an iPhone is a must for you though I'd look at the SE or Plus variety, both have better screen on time than the 7.

I ordered two, separately. It shows the second time as the much higher (though still good) price. The trick if this happens to you also and you want a different colour: Order whatever shipped as showing at the lower price. Then edit, in the basket, to your preferred colour. It then accepted at the lower price the black OK, from the gold previously.
