There's apparently a 4k box with Alexa voice control built in I was hoping would be announced today

Maybe for USA only. Echo Show is now available to preorder in UK . Before it was only available in USA

In the USA Amazon is also bundling together the Fire TV and the Echo Dot for $79.99 for a limited time, as well as a similar offer for the Fire TV Stick and Echo Dot for $59.99.

Can't see such a deal here.

In the USA the Echo can be used to control the Fire TV by voice without touching the remote. According to Amazon this will be available too here in the UK soon.

Yeah, fail to see what is so great here too. Aside from the alexa stuff, which is of zero interest to me personally, i dont see what it does the current fire tv doesn't do already?

In some ways it seems a step back e.g. no ethernet port, which is surely the best option for trouble free streaming especially at uhd, which is surely the main reason to own the fire tv box over the cheaper stick...

For anyone considering one of these, some points to consider based on personal experience of both previous Fire TV's and Fire TV Stick and various android based streaming boxes plus the Nvidia Shield and Xiaomi Mii box...

The Amazon products are the only products that offer all of the UK catchup services (BBC, ITV, More4 and My5). Other boxes generally only offer one or two of these.

The amazon voice control for media is gimmicky at best however it is currently much better than its rivals in my opinion and is officially supported by Plex with their own skill.

Only the fire tv products and the shield support Amazon video... If you use this service then it's something to consider... I missed this when I had my Mii box which is why I bought the shield!

The only product I've had working consistently with 4K content (and currently use) is the Nvidia Shield... But it's £100 and doesn't support some of the catchup services mentioned above... Plus some users don't like it's remote which doesn't have dedicated play, fast forward or rewind buttons.

The new Fire TV doesn't have a built in ethernet port or USB port for external storage... While it is technically capable of playing high end 4k HDR from my experience of using the shield and Mii box, the bottleneck is connectivity to the source... Even the shield struggles with 50GB+ files over a wired network (caveat here being that it could be my network) however it works much better over ethernet than it does over my 5ghz WiFi with no other devices connected to my WiFi and the router 2 foot away! Streaming amazon or Netflix 4k is fine on the Shield on wired but can be hit and miss over WiFi. For what it's worth, I have 80Mbps fibre broadband and all of my devices are connected via ethernet.

So this turned into a rather long post!... But hopefully it's answered the usual questions people post.

EDIT: for what it's worth, there are well founded rumours that amazon will be launching another fire tv product that is going to have a higher spec than this that will be a combination of a fire tv and an Amazon echo... This will likely have an ethernet port and USB for expandable storage.

I think that depends on your definitions - Amazon Video is available in the Google Play Store nowadays, and my Freesat box has access to all the catchup services you mention (including STV Hub - as ITV Hub is region specific). The more interesting one in terms of catchup/alternative services is which box supports everything including NowTV.
pabosotf123 to alg
28 Sep 17 #16
That's why I bought a Roku Stick, it's not the fastest or 4K but you can access all the services I need from one device including NowTV, Netflix and Amazon Prime. Just wish Roku would update their lineup over here as the US market has had several new boxes and we're still stuck with the old models for some reason.
doveman007 to dotnetter
28 Sep 17 #18
I know it's not true that only Amazon products provide all the UK catch-up services. My free BT Youview box does and so did my cheap NowTV box, although the interface was very sluggish on that.

Actually, the NOW TV box offers BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All 4, Viceland and Demand 5.

Don't forget this is the new stick not box, some of you appear to be mixing them up.

The new box hasn't been officially announced yet but will have the same connectivity as the current Fire TV 4K, better hardware, proper built in Alexa with mic and speaker so you don't have to use the remote and a built in IR blaster to control your TV, AV equipment etc similar to logitech harmony products.
AndrewBickers to Zooicidal
28 Sep 17 #11
Is this correct? Whilst I agree it looks like a hybrid of a stick / box it's been touted as the new Fire TV with no mention of stick in the title and the price point is along the lines of the former two generations of Fire TV with a prime pre order discount.

But it is missing the built in Alexa I keep seeing mentioned.
Zooicidal to AndrewBickers
28 Sep 17 #14
I suppose it's technically a dangling box but to me it seems targeted as an upgrade for stick users, while the new box (more of a cube) that will be announced in the next few months an upgrade to the box.

Sorry but how is this a deal? RRP...
Argyll68
28 Sep 17 #21
I already have the Firebox (Ethernet connected) and Firestick. I considered buying this but the lack of Ethernet port puts me off. I read you can buy an ethernet adaptor for around $15 which would take it to £80ish. I reckon you would need the Ethernet port as my Firestick struggles with some stuff and find it almost impossible to watch live streams.

If you're on twitter read 'Kodi tips' review of these. They are $69 (£59) in the US. Why are we being ripped off in the UK?
pabosotf123 to Argyll68
28 Sep 17 #23
Because we pay 20% VAT which is included in the £69.99 price so here it costs £58.32 + VAT. USA pay sales tax which is normally around 6%, it is then added to the sale price so $69.99 + TAX = $74.19. We still pay more but not as much as it seems.

I am probably going to hold out for the cube device. I am a big fan of Amazon Fire TV devices, so am going to hold out for a while. I am disappointed with the lack of ethernet cable & USB port.
32114429.jpgThe cube to the left in the image atop this post is supposed to be the premium Fire TV device, no technical specs have leaked yet, but AFTVnews has heard that “it essentially combines the functionality of a Fire TV, an Echo Dot, and an IR emitter […] into a single device.” The holes you see on top of the flagship Fire TV “accommodate its array of far-field microphones,” allowing you to speak directly to the device rather than having to use a voice remote. But a voice remote will still come included in the package, as the leaked image above suggests.

Yes seems like they want to make more money by taking out the Ethernet port from their last 4k model and sell as separate device . 4k over wi-fi does not work for me , even with router upgrade etc . Always gives buffering , which is really stupid to remove Ethernet. It does have hdmi 2.0 and HDR which was not present in old model so that is welcome . But I have nvidia shield TV (which can play Amazon TV ) with same so I am going to wait .

Do find it really strange that all these new 4k streaming devices being launched come without ethernet ports... even in America, wifi isnt reliable enough to support 4k streaming as standard! I was also hoping the new Fire TV device would support HDR & Dolby Vision so that we get bigger access to 4k digital library... sadly only supports HDR + Dolby Atmos.

Was gonna buy the current FireTV. Telly's in a wifi deadspot so needed the wired ethernet link.

So now they've brought this out instead. Same thing but without the ethernet (now an extra £14 for an 'adaptor') and a load of gimmicy voice crap I don't want.

Looks like its a Roku for me then.

Sorry what is the deal here? Its the regular price of the item that is going to be for the next few months atleast. So no deal here et all.

And it costs $69 in the US and £69 in the UK. Pretty sure no one can understand how that worked out. And we are voting this to be a Hot deal.

AshUK2000 to abhijitdash123

USA prices do not include sales tax (i.e VAT), so in comparison: $69 = £51.41 + 20% = £61.69. The different in price could be shipping & distribution costs. It will be interesting to see if the £69 will be the standard price or a promotional price for pre-ordering.

As does my Sony Android TV
ST3123
28 Sep 17 #43
Depends very much on the brand and age of the TV. UHD has been around a few years now and the earlier sets had far more limited smart features. Also big brands like Sony etc are more likely to have all the main apps than smaller brands and Vestel based sets. I have two Digihome 4K sets (I use one as my TV and the other primarily as a monitor with my PC), which I am perfectly happy with, but have both very limited Smart apps, with only Netflix and Youtube for UHD content and they are rather laggy at times too. So there is still something of a market for external boxes and will be pretty much indefinitely IMHO as people do not like to replace their TV set every couple of years, but TV smart features are notorious for losing support, features and even getting discontinued once the TV model is no longer 'current'.

These boxes are great for keeping older, or just off-brand TV sets current with the latest apps and best performance....

28 Sep 17 #44
This product is a real own goal.
1. The ridiculously short HDMI cable, means the box will have to "hang" off the back of the TV. I cannot imagine that is good for the tv port, but real concern is wall mounted TV's?. How does it work? if the box doesn't fit? do I need to buy an extender? (assuming they work, it's more cost).
2. 4K via Wifi? Seriously Amazon what where you thinking?. Profit, I guess as an Ethernet adaptor can be bought separately. Another box to hang off the first box.

I really don't get Amazon sometimes, they release a product, then when they revise it they make it much much worse.
bobbler
28 Sep 17 #45
It could certainly be your network or the box that's hosting the content mate.
I have a similar setup - Nvidia shield, Plex server on a separate PC based system (it's an i3 based server)

On ethernet - via 1200 meg powerline adapters my speed is limited to 20-30 meg via them realistically. However I can stream 4K files (32GB MKV total size) over my wifi to the Shield perfectly at 4K - well worth the upgrade to the BT Whole Home "mesh" network if you can do it.

Yes this is pretty much a 4k version of the stick for twice the price so not sure why it's so hot, although having said that I probably will upgrade to the cube once it's released, but imagine that will be at least £100+ so another great move by Amazon to rake in the money lol

Agreed. But cube might not be released in UK . Echo show was released much earlier in USA and only now in UK .
AshUK2000
28 Sep 17 #52
They probably needed to get UK specific content providers for the Amazon Show and build applications for them; this doesn't really apply to the cube as it's basically a glorified firmware, hardware and look update to a pre-existing device.

TV
Shield TV does support UK TV apps such as ITV Player, 40D and My5 via casting. I've streamed 4K content on a fibre connection over wifi on my shield and never had an issue. It could be your router to blame and if it is say a BT router or Sky router etc I'm not surprised your having issues. My Asus router (while not perfect) does support fibre connections with its built in vdsl modem.

Anyone should. You can throw this away and upgrade it quite more often than a 1000K TV. Not to mention that NSA has lost not one but two usb sticks with thousand of exploits. All a script kid has to do is download them and choose a malicious task. Are you forgetting the scandal that all Samsung Android TV's were compromised earlier this year?

Keep your tv dump, and add the brains on something you can switch off.

As for the deal I agree, unless you really want specific content, the Xiaomi Mi Box3 is a better option. They are both based at the same chip-set, but it runs pure android TV OS , which is considerably better than the amazon's crappy one. It is also verified and certified as a chrome-cast device so you can use it with any android phone, and it is Netflix certified for 4K playback.

Not many considerably more powerful devices can play Netflix 4K. I am not aware of the capabilities of the new fire-TV on that aspect, but I highly recommend you look them up before you dish that amount of money for a clone with a amazon skin.

INCORRECT - Roku Boxes offer more - they offer all the terrestrial services and NowTV. Also Amazon's licensing agreements mean that some of their terrestrial players also don't offer all the content available on other platforms - again Roku don't suffer the same restrictions. Pretty sure Roku players are the only ones in the UK that offer all of the major streaming options - inc Amazon, Google Play, Terrestrial TV, Now TV, YouTube. There are others but haven't got time to check now.

Fire sticks are slow to use... The fire tv box was tons better. I've used various boxes but found none of them to be very good.

Depends what you watch on your fire stick... Netflix won't work on nearly all android boxes, amazon will work on even less etc
dotnetter
30 Sep 17 #78
In addition to my previous long post... I'll try and summerise which box you should consider based on what you want to watch on it... This is based on using only the device, not a mobile phone to cast the video...

Kodi
Pretty much any android box or fire tv or stick.

Netflix
Any fire tv or stick, nvidia shield or xiaomi mii box. Other android boxes offer Netflix however it's rarely an official app and so normally isn't a great experience or won't offer full quality video.

Amazon Video
Any fire tv or stick or the Nvidia shield - nothing else

UK catchup services
Any fire tv or stick.

Please note, I haven't included the now tv box or roku boxes as I have no experience with them...my understanding though is that they can't run Kodi or amazon.

What router do you have for WiFi?

I'm limited... I have broadband through Now TV (basically sky) which came with those horrible routers that don't even have gigabit lan!

So, I've utilised an old BT home hub 5 as an access point. I have CAT6 (total over kill but...) cable from now TV to a gigabit switch, then everything spurs off of that via CAT6 including the BT hh5. The hh5 is sat basically next to the shield... I even tried moving it further away in case that was the problem!

Luckily, my room layout is such that I can use ethernet.
