Yes they do, I bought some a couple of weeks ago, brought them home and plugged my phone in - My PC couldnt recognise the phone, old cable - PC recognises phone. Tried my daughters phone - ditto.
Took the cables back and got a refund; girl at the counter agreed they were rubbish; OK as a charging cable, but useless for data transfer; she had seen loads being returned.
EndemicAlarm to Gentle_Giant

That's because data isn't actually a requirement, some cables are specifically made for charging only. But ignore sam_of_london, I've finally realised he deliberately talks garbage in tech threads. Classic trolling.
Gentle_Giant to EndemicAlarm
1 Oct 17#74
You are sort of correct; USB was developed as a data transfer system, charging was secondary; yes, many phone and other mobile device makers included a "charging only" cable (because they are arseholes), but anything sold as a "USB" cable should be capable of data transfer.
What happens with many of these cheap cable makers is, poor manufacturing standards and poor quality control; the machines are badly maintained, so the cables dont always get terminated correctly. The same issue has been happening for decades, I remember getting a parallel port cable that didnt work back in the early 90's; when I opened it up, the terminations were crimped to the insulation - they hadnt stripped it back, so there was no electrical pathway.

I already have loads of them from previous blackberry years and don't buy anymore. All I need is usb C now. I have some new lying around which I bought from Sam,s 99p shop in London . These are individually packed in thick plastic, which work fine with data transfer as well.

Have to disagree about anker quality. They've failed on me more than any brand. Sure they have good customer service which I can't be bothered using on something as cheap as a usb cable, but I don't think their quality control is anything special.

Plus, Anker put their logo on the wrong side, so I always want to put them in upside down when I'm forced to use them at my girlfriend's place.
I bought this exact pack a year ago and they're all still going strong. I've ordered some more to replace the aukey ones that I've had a couple of weeks and two of them already fall out of the slots.
Thanks op

And yet my old trusty BlackBerry wall adapter USB charger hasn't broken once in over 4 years, still going strong to this day, only needed a microUSB to Type-C and it still works. Cables from these Amazon "European/American retailers" are low cost Chinese rebrands, just have a look at how similar their other products are to the likes of AUKEY, Sumpower, etc.

Yes, I'm aware - the title says "5pk".
But I don't want a 1ft cable (it's useless) and I don't need a 10ft cable or 2 x 3ft cables (I have loads already).
Hence, my original comment - £7 for basically a cable since the sizes are mostly useless to me.

These cables are a bag of willies and will give you seven years bad luck. They charge very slowly and break easily. If you need anything other than disposable, don't bother.
I second Voltuz, I bought them to replace these wastes of space and they will probably survive an apocalypse.
I appreciate that they're £12.98 versus £3.49. But you'll ultimately be paying £12.98 + £3.49. They've been at the £10 mark in case you want to add them to a wishlist and wait it out.

Most of these cheap cables use poor quality wire, and the slow charging is more of a problem than how long they last.
They tend to only allow a low current of less than 700mA, when many devices b require two or three times that.

I am using one of these Ravpower nylon cables right now and can say they are crud. I took a brand new one out the box yesterday and tried it out using Ampere which reports an average 600mA. £1 cable from Poundland reports 890mA. These are crap and although they are nylon braided so you don't ever see the cable break, I am on my 3rd in 6 months and they don't get used by anyone but myself for my phone and tablet, so ultimately one charge per day per device, not a lot of use at all. You don't even get what you pay for here - Poundland ones are better and last just as long!
