Kodi always has legitimate HTPC uses, the theives were only a part of it's userbase.

I need to get something for a mate to play 4k content from a USB stick, but he's unbelievablly tech useless.
What Apps would be best to install on this that would require the fewest steps to get something playing?

Install MX player from the play store and that it.

I find that kodi plays high-def content better than mx player (although maybe mxp is easier to operate than kodi)
So, that will be 2 years quicker than your "Refer a friend" bonus from Virgin Media then.

Stupid question. Do I need to install anything or does it work straight out of the box?
Gordon.Bell to letmeout
3 Aug 17#25
Runs out of the box. It's just android with a TV skin (you can install a launcher like Nova Launcher to put it back into a tablet or phone look). Its effectively an android tablet without a screen, as it uses the TV screen. To install additional apps/programs, you would usually use Google Playstore (pre-installed).

Pretty much nailed it. If you're after playing 4k content with HDR you're better off elsewhere imo. Hopefully the new Amazon box will support HDR, god knows why it wasn't included in their flagship box to begin with.

Will this be bteer than my Minix Neo 8X-H? I find the Minix sometimes stutters with h.265 1080p files, whereas my cheapy Nexbox S905 (which i bought through this site last year for under £30) plays them without a problem...

Where is your TV? Do you have a PC near your TV?
Most people buy a Skankbox because of 2 main reasons.
1) They are tight as buttholes and only have double glazing just so the kids cannot hear the ice cream van. They will view a subscription to Virgin or Sky in the same way as donating £50 a month to the Liberal Democrat Party's overseas education program to find the next African boy band. 2) They want to watch all the illegal, thieved content on the big TV in the lounge.

When buying from China sites (Gearbest, Banggood, etc..), always choose china post or untracked delivery. Choosing DHL or any of the major companies will massively increase the chances of getting import tax charged.

Don't waste your time with some android box like this if you're a casual user, just stick with a fireTV and maybe look how to sideload apps and stuff. Boxes like this are for people who enjoy spending hours and hours every few months redoing the whole thing, working out why some files are all jittery, modding etc etc, it's a world of hurt

Kodi on Android is just awful and should have never happened, to the common uneducated Piracy Box user it's all they know of Kodi. It is possible to get decent performance out of most of these boxes if you stop using Android and flash a native Linux build for your device like LibreElec. The pissing about every month re-configuring etc is an Android/Piracy Addon problem drop that horrible combination and you can have a decent little media player. Most Android boxes lack the RAM to handle Android alone never mind Kodi and all the terribly written python scripts that make up the "Builds" and piracy addons. Throwing more RAM at them may help but your still not going to get the desired experience. Bear in mind the original Xbox had a 733mhz single core CPU and 64MB of ram and still ran better than most of these boxes do. (I know Kodi has come a long way and no longer supports Xbox officially but it is by no means a bloated unoptimised piece of software, thats what "Builds" do to it)
I've been using Kodi since it was XBMP and never bothered with any of the piracy scripts. I have had an s905x box running TV Headend with a usb tuner and interfacing via Samba/Plex without too much faffing using LibreElec, Once setup it was pretty stable.

I wasn't trying to scare people, your fast and stable comment i would say is open to interpretation. Kodi may be fine but its usually running on a bloated half arsed Android rom The majority of people who come to me with Android boxes complain about performance, I tell them to try a native build on a minimal system like LibreElec and they wont go back to Android after that. Almost instant boot times compared to Android and a much cleaner less bloated system behind the Kodi frontend.
I would ask anyone to compare a box running its default Android Rom and a minimal linux system and tell me Android runs faster with greater stability on the same hardware.

you can get boxes with Android 7.1 on now for about the same price, although they aren't as powerful as this one (typically 1GB/8GB ram)

4 Aug 17#69
The WeTek Play 2 is a more polished and professional device (as you can tell by the price point) You are likely to get better support from WeTek. Personally, i would say if you do not need a DVB-S tuner then i would get this box, More RAM, Better 4K Codec support and at a cheaper cost. I would ditch Android and install LibreElec on it as soon as it arrives. (The WeTek box runs LibreElec natively i believe)

4 Aug 17#70
Why would you want to boot straight into LibreElec when MX Player Pro is a better media player. Is Amazon Prime video/BBC iplayer app via LibreElec?? Can you play emulator games via LibreElec. These Android boxes run Kodi/SPMC perfectly fine. Your're right LibreElec does run Kodi faster IF your sole purpose is to use Kodi and only Kodi. My Android TV box I would say I probably use SPMC only 20% of the time.

For people thinking of getting this I thought I would weight in with my 2 cents. I've bought these android boxes before and while on paper they seem good value and spec, they are buggy as hell and fail with all sorts of issues ranging from connection issues to freezing and crashes. I would highly recommend just getting an Amazon fire stick or TV instead and just installing Kodi on that as they are much more stable.

Kodi is preloaded and so are the addons. I used for a couple of hours playing with it and streaming videos also from a USB stick and seems pretty quick to me. Only the remote it seems to work only when it's precisely directed to the front of the box but I'm planning to get one of those remotes with the keypad.
