Not 100% sure but unlikely. Similar WD drives have the USB3 connector physically soldered to the drive board, rather than having some removable SATA to USB3 adaptor that would otherwise make the drive compatabile with standard SATA connecions. Can't immediately find any teardown / disassembly refs for the My Passport X model(s).

Yep you can guarantee it on every wd refurb deal. Well to add some balance before the moaners descend onto this, I have owned several WD refurbs and not had problems with any and IMHO a brand new drive has just as much chance of failing so there! :stuck_out_tongue:

No they not, not always. And your comments is rather sweepingly generalised and inaccurate. I have refurbs that still going after several years. Basic common sense applied when it comes to important data when you use any drive applied and you'll be fine. (Keep backups of backups)

People always say this on recertified drive threads. In my experience there's nothing wrong with them. In fact, I've had hard drives brand new from Amazon fail before these. It's simply luck, but many people on HUKD have never had an issue with failure of recertified drives.

It's probably more sensible to think about the use of the drive .. if you need it for storage of important stuff then it's crazy to cheap out on refurb drives .. if you are using it for an Xbox PS then it's fine IMHO

Well I bought one a few months ago. Looked like new & passed every test I threw at it. Nothing to say it won't break next week but the same could be said about any drive. Not sure I'd ever return a failed drive - even if it had a 3 year guarantee.

Any thoughts on the 4TB desktop refurbs? I need a 4TB to strip and use as an internal media drive and I'd like a 4TB portable to act as a mirrored backup (using a scheduled robocopy or similar)?

HUKD is pretty toxic re feedback HDD refurbs, but I can summarise my own experience as very positive. I ran tests on my 'new' 4GB WD refurb when it arrived recently, passed with flying colours. I have another 2GB refurb that's been running fine since 2012.
Don't store anything on it before dismantling, however, as you won't be able to recover that data (thanks to encryption on the bit of hardware in the enclosure, which you will unplug when you strip it).

Do you realise how much data one can fit in 3TB? Why voluntarily "choosing" to put an extra risk in the possibility of a failure?
This is just like using a condom with sellotape, I wouldn't risk it but some people seem to be penny wise pound foolish.
Good luck, with the recovery process and the pregnancy for that matter
dave859 to mickael28
26 Aug 17#38
Really does depend what you plan on storing on it, A new drive from any retailer could fail anytime and putting home videos and pictures is probably a bit of a risk if it's your only backup. Big drives are fine for PS4/Xbox as anything can be downloaded again if the drive does fail. These have probably had more tests done on them than brand new ones.

For those of us who know about these things. 1. Keep copies of data in multiple places. Hard drive, cloud etc. 2. Wear multiple condoms when indulging in some nooky.

3TBs of data will fit in 3TB.
If your method isn't to negate all risk by backing up twice or more, instead ensuring that the one drive on which you store it was brand new at purchase, then you don't understand enough to condescend.
mickael28 to Stimpington
26 Aug 17#54
Yes, I duplicate everything I store. I don't even trust those cases which offer RAID for you, as they might have a bug in their software or hardware at some point and you're screw, or they stop supporting it all together in a few years and something happens that affect you.
My point is that storage is not that expensive nowadays, just try to prevent as much as it's in your hand, buying a recert drive is an extra risk. Just get 2 new ones (different brands even) and the likelihood is greatly reduced, it's not going to change your finances much at the end of the year.

The PS4 can quite comfortably power a 2.5" drive over USB on its own. Be careful though because the front ports on the Pro models seem less powerful than the one on the back that is purposefully designed for ext storage.

I ordered two 2TB drives - used a personal WD code which gave me an extra 20% off - total ££60.78!
They send me these codes regularly but this is the first time one's actually worked - had quite a shock when the discount applied.
Also had a surprise today when the drives arrived. I've bought WD refurbs many times which were in plain boxes, but these drives were in their original retail blister packaging. Don't think they're refurbs at all - looks like they've got a 3 year warranty also.

I also got mine today but according to Speccy it has undergone some pretty heavy use in the past. I'm running a HD Tune scan against it now before I format it for my PS4 but hopefully it will come back clear and last a few years.
I also got a plain brown box one so it seems like there's very little consistency here.

Had never heard of Speccy before but I've just tried it and for some strange reason it displays the stats from my SSD C drive instead of this one..
Sounds like its doing that for you too so you should try a different program.
Spark to ianbeany

You're absolutely right, I just rechecked it and it's showing the same stats for every drive in my machine. I think there's a bug in the latest version because when I used it last year it was fine.
Unfortunately it seems like you need the registered version of HD Sentinel for SMART reporting unless I'm missing something.

Mine is a registered (well sort of  ) version so that might be the case.
