Just picked mine up from local dealer and they offered to install for free. Simply phone up servicing and mention the promotional offer - they didn't even ask for proof of vw ownership (as I didn't have my car on me at the time)

When you say install, isn't it simply a case of plugging this into the OBD port?

So, went to my local dealers and spoke to someone from the parts dept. who advised he is awaiting a shipment of these - he didn't come across as very convincing as he was saying this.
Took my details and promised to call me when it comes in.
Sorry, but am a bit skeptical as this dealer is a bit of an ar*e!

So, I need to eat some humble pie.
I did indeed get a call from the dealer a few days ago and subsequently picked up the data plug.

I am just wondering if there is a hidden reason for giving these out free? From the brief look at what it does the data recorded could be misused maybe by insurance companies in case of an accident or to get a history of the owner's driving speeds etc. Not convinced as to what I would use this for.
greencode to sydney871
18 Aug 17#41
I was thinking the same thing re. speeds. One of those ones you really need to read the T&C's but they'll be worded in such a way that you'll have no idea what it means or what your rights are anyway!

18 Aug 17#43
Good point but I think if VW wants to share info, they can get it anyway from the engine logs as the smartphone app is just a front end to show the data for car owners. The data is actually generated by the car itself and can be retrieved by VW anytime they wish. They perform all checking using the OBD port connector and have much sohisticated sw to go through each and every piece of information the car computer generates.

All the information is stored on your phone. Info doesn't get transmitted anywhere else.

18 Aug 17#46
Yes but there is an App which you have to download. It is that App that worries me.
davidmcmillan to sydney871
19 Aug 17#49
The app is what stores the information on your phone....otherwise it would have no way of connecting to the DataPlug. The Dstaplug without the app is useless.

Don't bother with VW Parkway in Leicester. Gave me some rubbish about they have to book me in and go through it and program it to my car. I told them that was absolute rubbish. Obviously as I've never been there before (my car's only 3 months old!) they were trying to get me in to their place. Well, they have lost a prospective customer by doing that.

I wonder if this would work with other VW group cars? (Seat, Skoda, Audi etc) In my case a 2016 Skoda Fabia which shares many parts with the VW Polo........
Newbold to shakerstevens
16 Aug 17#23
No technical reason why it shouldn't, given that the're all effectively VWs under the bonnet, unless they've programmed it not to. I believe VW are quite good at clever little computer tricks.........

Could be related to monitoring cars following the #fixfail issue they had with emissions. Many people who've had the emissions fix on their cars have run into major issues, which VW are refusing to admit is related to their 'fix', which puts a lot of stress on the car, and promotes more frequent regeneration of the DPF filter, leading to some very expensive repairs.
dck to Matholwch
16 Aug 17#31
Technically they could use this OBDII device to update the EA189 engine's firmware on those 'awkward' customers who refuse to have their cars ruined by the #fixfail update.
Sinclair Volkswagen applied the update to my car, despite promising not to update it. The engine's noisier, keeps stalling (not supposed to happen on an automatic/DSG) and when I put my foot down, there's nothing there anymore.
Beware of VW bearing free gifts!!!
Skymonkey to Matholwch

Totally agree. VW have lied to customers and governments. This is a fact. They installed a piece of software that tricked testers, giving lower emissions to pass testing. They, VW have repaired cars with a software uodate resulting in them breaking down, causing injury, increasing fuel consumption and placing greater wear on parts. Nothing is ever free, this deal is just a way to pass on your car data. Make, model, registration (will be linked to the VIN).
I have one of the affected cars and despite numerous attempts from VW, will not get the fix done or take them up on this offer. Their level of deceit is unbelievable.

Similar story here. Called Citygate and Alan day and the calls went into into serious labour. Went to Alan Day City and picked up one. They didn't even ask if I have a VW car simply gave me one.

I'm not stuck to my phone like most people are, it gets switched off when i'm not in a position to be using it - when i'm driving or at work (and not on a break). My phone certainly won't tell VW how i've been driving my Golf.

No data is stored in the Plug or transmitted to any backend system. All the information stays on the user's mobile phone. The only way data is transmitted elsewhere is when a warning light or service notification pops up and the user clicks to send this information to their preferred Volkswagen Retailer - there is no obligation to do so however.

Is there a better app than VW Connect which can be used to get data from the Plug? I have Torque from Google Play but not able to connect to the VW data plug.

Can't see the point of this, this ecru will tell me if there is anything wrong and then I can scan it myself, in real time I can use the torque app. dont want vw saying come in for a diagnostics check at £95 a go. i had a free abs recall last week and they gave car a free check. needs new tyres soon, they want £210 a wheel, no thanks I'll get my michelins for £90 instea

Nice Post.
The retail of £80 is a little silly though from the dealers as VW suggest the retail price to be €39.50. Thats direct from VW Germany.
Still suppose there doing a good job offering it for those who want, just dosen't add up.

TBH there's no point in them questioning the owner too much and there's also no way they'd be able to charge £80 for this. Ultimately you need this to use that Connect app and it'll help them to find out what their cars are doing day to day.
