Be better if the stupid phones supplied a standard micro USB slot, instead or at least in addition to.
Standard micro USB is safe and convenient.

8p is a good deal, but for me I would chuck it in the bin, any cheap China USB plugs or sockets may or probably will trash your Phones or Devices USB pins, which can be an expensive repair, only to find the repair shop has also fitted a cheap china tat to replace your now broken OEM spec USB connector.
Sometimes, just sometimes you pay for what you get.

Are there any risks with this? I know that cheaper connectors can damage your device.
Krooner to kutekitty
23 Aug 17#22
Not really, it just converts the connector, it doesn't draw voltage or anything.

Actually I don't think that's true, these adaptors do need to have some circuitry in them. Search Benson Leunge reviews and you'll see its far from simple. They seem to have at least a resistor in and some don't have the correct one.

Probably worth not it then...

Not true. Amazon actually banned a load of these cheap adaptors due to the damage that non-approved ones can do.
One of Google's engineers, Benson Leung, has been testing out a selection of the USB Type-C cables and adapters that you can buy on Amazon (thanks Ars Technica). Worryingly, a high percentage of them aren't fulfilling the USB Type-C specification, particularly the cheaper ones. Leung has been leaving bad reviews for the offenders on the respective product pages.
So far, Leung has tested 10 of them, and only three have passed. The Belkin, the iOrange-E, and the Frieq cables are all good, but they are more expensive, up around $20. There are cheaper ones available, but of the ones tested so far, they just aren't up to snuff.
For the most part, the third party USB Type-C cables have been fine for charging smartphones, but using them on higher powered devices (Leung has been testing them on a Chromebook Pixel) probably won't be useful. In fact it might even be harmful to some of your devices if you try.
For example, Leung said that with CableCreation's micro-to-Type-C adapter, "your phone, tablet, or laptop computer may attempt to draw 3A, which may be more than the micro-b to A cable you attach to this adapter may be able to handle. This may cause damage to whatever cable, hub, pc, or charger you plug into this."
The reason behind the problem is mainly to do with how the cables handle going from a Type-A to a Type-C connector. In the example above, the cable was only using a 10kO resistor, when it should be using a 56kO.

You're right and your answer should be top of the comments. On the other hand now that we know that these adapters will likely put a charger in an overcurrent situation, you can use them safely so long as your charger can handle that situation safely. Some will let the voltage droop well out of spec then catch fire, but good chargers will happily supply 5V at say 1A even when the resistor value is such that more's being requested.
The other thing is that cables with the right resistor value (ones that limit charging to low currents) are bloody annoying in that they won't charge a phone while it has background apps running, wifi on, high brightness etc. What's a person to do but break specs until they upgrade to proper USB-C chargers (which are still expensive, at least PD capable ones are)

I had some of these off ebay and found them to be terrible. About about 5 and they didn't fast charge. They also bend very very easily. I ended up just opting to buy replacement cables and chucking the adaptors
