Neat little device - I have the older TL-WR702N - multi usage scenarios. I currently use mine attached to my BT Youview box Ethernet port - powered by the USB port - works great. Have also used on holiday for creating a hotspot from a Ethernet socket in hotel room.

Yes. So instead of connecting your device to the broadband router using a wire (ethernet or powerline) you connect it wirelessly using this TP-Link thingy. I just bought one today and used it to connect my NAS to the broadband router.

Genuine question, what purpose does this give plugged into the ethernet on BT youview box?

It makes your wired device connect to your wireless network wirelessly saving you from buying a device called "bridge".

As in you can use this to mimic the ethernet cable to WiFi rather than use Powerline adapters?

You can get the gl-inet mini routers for around this price, £17-£20 on aliexpress for the gl-MT300n or the gl-AR150
More memory and dual Ethernet ports and they run openwrt

But this is from a UK based company that pays tax on UK sales and employs people in the UK; those you mention are from aliexpress.

not sure, quite a few hotels i've been in recently have ethernet but have paid wifi, this would be great for that scenario

Could do with something that shares a wifi connection really, rare to get ethernet in your room but often pay for wifi per device.

This will do exactly that, ideal for hotels with 'per device' charges. Used for 2 weeks with the family, had to logged in only twice and left it running 24x7 with all our devices just logging into here. Even sat round the pool and could pick up the signal from there.
the key feature that lets you do this is "WISP". I think basically it has two wifi capabilities in the device , one links to the hotel ( or whatever ) and the other it generates itself for your devices to share.
£15 is a bargain too I think as I spend a while price tracking before I bought at more than that.

Why say well protected when WEP has been crackable for years.

Because it's got a range of WPA connections too?

This looks like one I got from sky a couple of years ago. It was to give a stronger access point upstairs. I now have it, like harry66 says, for my upstairs youview box.
