Never used this before as you can top up your account online (or just pay when you purchase)
Is this just adding £20 to your Amazon balance to get a free fiver?

I've never used top up on Amazon before. Is this just like buying a £20 Amazon card from a shop and then adding it to your Amazon account? Or is there something else you need to do in the shop. I just usually buy as and when. Need to buy a couple of bits off Amazon soon though so a fiver in my pocket is more than welcome.

Edit: ah so you just show them the barcode, they scan it, you give them £20 and bobs your favourite uncle?

Just like topping up a pay as you phone in your local convenience store.

how does this work?
1) Go to a shop (which shops - where to find info?)
2) Ask for Amazon topup card for £20
3) Apply to account in shop? or bring the topup card home and add it like a promotional balance?

You can use the amazon App to create the barcode and just take it to the store for top up. :sunglasses: thanks OP
TehJumpingJawa to shabbird
15 Aug 17 #27
Which app? Amazon has dozens!
Do you mean "Amazon for tablets"?

That's just a browser for the Amazon website; as far as I can tell, it doesn't have any special provision for displaying your topup barcode. (You still have to have the link texted to a mobile no, or printed out.)

Or does the prime now app have some special function?
Or perhaps Amazon underground app store?
Be more specific pls.

sorry.. I just have the amazon shopping app (android) one for my smartphone.
Login, Your Account, Top up your account and then select Top up in store and this gives you
the option to create a barcode. Handy to take it to store.

Hopefully above should be similar in other Amazon apps

Option for Amazon to send weblink to you by SMS. Note that some mobile providers - and some phones -)will convert the free SMS into a (charged) MMS message, so you end up paying 25p or more for the privilege of receivibng said message #btmobile #windowsphones
Crossbow to RogerN
15 Aug 17 #30
Thanks for the warning, but I found it's just a standard text message with a weblink (see below) - so it's not a MMS, which could be chargeable. So free & easy if you don't own a printer, or don't want the hassle of printing it. Plus, when you follow the link, there's an option to save the barcode to the Amazon app (the standard shopping one).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but all the barcode does is identify the product you want to purchase.

The £5 bonus is awarded when you apply the top-up to your account. (A separate step to the actual purchase)

:Edit:

Oh, looks like a am at least partially wrong.
So will we still qualify for the bonus if we buy a top up voucher without the barcode, and apply it manually? Or is that simply considered an Amazon gift card and not eligible?
kestrelcampbell to TehJumpingJawa
15 Aug 17 #39
I went into a Paypoint shop today. I got blank looks when I mentioned I had a barcode, so I just paid for a £20 top-up, which I applied to my Amazon account, just as you would went increasing your gift card balance. No £5 bonus materialised so I went on Amazon Chat and they said it should appear within an hour. When an hour passed with still no bonus I went back on Chat and they manually applied the £5 promo to my account. I assume the gift card code I applied identifies it as having come from a Paypoint terminal, so there weren't any issues with Amazon doing this as they said they knew I was eligible for the offer.

31700027-N4yfL.jpgSeems there FAQ's offer conflicting help info.....
So i would assume that it's just like asking for a mobile top up, ie can i get a £20 top up voucher, they give you a receipt with the number you redeem online, (i suppose this is good if you only want a £5 top up, or you could just buy a gift card for £20).
However the app info then states no mention of asking the cashier for a top up it says if you cant get the barcode to scan for whatever reason you need to print off a copy of your unique top up code. (why would you need to do this if you can just ask the cashier for the amount you wish to top up)?

So i went in, to use my barcode from the Amazon app, in Spar, the staff were very helpful, but had never heard of anyone using the service yet.
The barcode never scanned, and from the comments on here, i said, is there another scanner, the girl said no, so the manager came over, and tried, no luck, he said could you print the barcode, i said sorry i don't have a printer.
I said the faq's on the app said if the barcode wont scan, just ask the staff member for an amazon top up, he said he couldnt do this, i said i think its like a customer asking for a mobile top up.
So he went into the paypoint system, and went OH, there is is, thats £20 please!
As this happened without the barcode scanning like others, i had to go on to Amazon Live chat to get the £5 added!

Went to my local co-op which is a paypoint location, staff had never heard of Amazon top up and the barcode wouldn't scan on two different tills using different scanners.
I asked for an Amazon top up code instead and they just pointed me to their gift card display with Amazon, Argos etc gift cards all over the place.
I spent 30 mins on the phone to Amazon customer service trying to explain the issue to somebody that barely spoke human.
Eventually I've got £5 promotional credit for the inconvenience without having to top up, even though the credit isn't showing yet :poop:

the £5 offer only could be used on items sold by amazon only, also could not use the 1-Click ordering method (you will have to add the relevant item(s) to your Shopping Basket and complete your order via checkout).
Or if nothing works out, use live chat ask them to put it on manually, hope it helps
herby247
17 Aug 17 #68
It's a shame for the staff, Amazon have obviously not rolled out the "brief" to Paypoint stores correctly or in enough time for the service going live!
The crux of the matter is, if the barcode doesn't/won't scan, then ask for an Amazon top up voucher, pay with cash.
The £20 you top up with will show in your Amazon gift card balance, BUT the £5 "extra" you get will NOT , it will also ONLY deduct from your basket total IF the products your buying are in stock and SOLD by Amazon themselves!
bobothebear
17 Aug 17 #69
The problem is that certain older scanners are unable to read any barcode from a phone/tablet screen. Hence it says to print it out because the screen/reflection etc etc won't be there and it will just work.

Hey I feel like i've been diddled.

I went into 2 supposed Amazon PayPoint locations today ... both Co-op stores listed as PayPoint top-up locations on Amazon!

Niether of the store's staff had a clue what to do with the bar code on my phone ... they just wafted it around near the scanner and nothing happened.

Just came off the phone from Amazon about it and all I got for my trouble was a promise to email me back within 24 hours ... how did you guys manage to get a credit?

Went in to my local Asda which has a paypoint and asked the woman to just scan my barcode on my phone (turned brightness up to full) it scanned and she said how much and gave her £20. 10 minutes later I had the money in my account with an email confirming the bonus £5

She said "oh that's cool I haven't seen that done before" so clearly she had no idea about it .

Best thing to do is just ask them to scan your barcode on your phone and not confuse them by asking for such and such and them possibly being clueless and confused.

If that doesn't work you can just ask them to find the option that says Amazon gift code top up and tell them how much you want , you'll get a code which you redeem on your account and the bonus £5 should be acknowledged in an email shortly after

19 Aug 17 #82
Can't believe how many people are failing to get this to work , it's so simple

Find your local shop with a paypoint machine here

Ask them if they have a scanner for the PayPoint machine (it has its own handheld scanner that is completely separate from anything to do with the till) if they do ask them to scan the barcode on your phone which can be found here (must be logged in) [have phone brightness set to full to make it easy to scan]
They will press a few buttons confirming and ask how much you want , £20 or anything over will get you your £5 bonus , hand over the cash (some do not accept card payments so I recommend having cash at hand ) and keep your receipt that will be printed off.

If they are unable to scan then just ask them to manually find an option on the paypoint machine called "Amazon top up gift code" , along with the amount given this will print off a code which you can then redeem on your Amazon account and still be eligible for the bonus £5 (note that these are completely different from the physical plastic gift cards cards you can buy at most supermarkets and all you are getting is a code on a receipt)

I've been sent the code by Amazon so I went to my local Pay Point newsagent and the guy didn't know what to do, he scanned it but wasn't sure if he was meant to take payment first and scan or scan and then add payment. They scan your barcode , they input the amount and you hand over the cash and that amount goes on to your account

If all else fails just ask them for an Amazon top up code which should be an option on the paypoint machine

I'd reccomend using the Amazon app if you have it as the barcode can be found on there once you're logged in and it's really easy to use provided they have a paypoint scanner that actually scans it , I think many people have been confused because it's not easily explained by either Amazon or PayPoint and isn't a well known service

Rubbish scanners wouldn't work on my phone so I'll return armed with a print out! If Amazon want this to take off they need to upgrade the Paypoint scanners to be less rubbish, other scanners are perfectly happy with my phone.

It does not seem to (should not???) appear in the "Gift card balance in "My Account". I got a second email from Amazon - immediately after one confirming the £20 topup - saying that the £5 extra credit would be applied to the next order but would expire on 30/11 if not used by then.

Read my post a few comments up , you don't have to provide them with anything , you can ask them to go on the paypoint machine and select something called Amazon top up code and then they enter the amount and you get a unique code which you redeem on the account . They offer this as Amazon know that sometimes the barcode system just isn't going to scan

Does anyone have an Amazon link detailing this offer? Amazon Live Chat are asking me and I can't find anything?

Oops, don't tend to buy direct from Amazon.co.uk and instead from Amazon Warehouse and third party sellers via Amazon.co.uk so this £5 might be sitting around awhile. :astonished:

Anyone know if top-up with Amex is possible - or is it based on the store? I assume Co-op is a safe bet if I wanted to use Amex?

Thanks op I topped up In a shop next door and it was quick and easy. The guy asked me to increase the screen brightness to the fullest so he can easily scan the barcode. Next day I received and email stating £5 promotional credit applied to my account. The only downside is that it can be only used against items sold by Amazon. Not even Amazon warehouse. Still it's ok as I often buy from Amazon. Thanks again.

Worked perfectly for me. As promised, within the hour the promotional credit was in my account.

I'm sure if you ask in the live support an mention you purchased a £20 voucher in the PayPoint store applied the voucher and have not had an email they will help out.

What I just thought about is I wonder if I now went along with my phone or printout with the barcode to scan would it still go ahead and automatically give me £5 for a £20 top up even though they already manually did this but I still never got the email for the offer? I suppose nothing to loose by trying.

30 Aug 17 #138
Just called Amazon to check but CSU doesn't seem to be aware of the deal, one thing she mentioned was it maybe for eligible account only but after hearing one person calling and getting it manually added as little reassuring. Don't suppose they got that person's name...

Via PayPoint or online top up? If the latter then they're not for everyone unfortunately

Mine was via online top up using my card so I topped up £100 in total and received £10 extra

Did this at Asda Living during my lunch hour today - staff had never done it before and said I had to pay in cash. It automatically credited the £20 though and around a half hour later I got the email from Amazon saying I had received the £5 credit too.

Just did this in Spar and they used the normal scanner, and it seemed to go through OK. Paid by credit card to get 7% cashback through Halifax with no extra charges.

2 Sep 17 #145
Didn't work for me. First Paypoint retailer couldn't get it to work, then went to the Co-Op and they couldn't get it to scan either, but she did use the till scanner rather than the handheld.
OneGloveOnTheFence
2 Sep 17 #146
Just ask them for an Amazon top up (without scanning your phone) add it to your account and contact Amazon. They'll add the fiver as they can see you got it from PayPoint

Reply from Amazon regarding the barcode issues.

"I do understand that you attempted to buy gift credit using Paypoint at two shops but both couldn't scan the barcode on your phone.

Please accept my sincere apology for the inconvenience caused.

This problem has been caused by a technical issue, and we're currently working on a solution.

I would like to inform you that, it has been experienced commonly by all some customers due to our fault in technical side.

Please understand that, as an online retailer, we're having so many departments and our technical engineers are working to resolve this issue as soon as possible within 24-48 hours.

Please be assured that, we'll resolve this issue within this time frame without fail."

It's same as where u top up gas and electricity card/key, show them the barcode from your Amazon website/app of the promotion (use link from above comments) and you will be sent an email with confirmation of the £5 credit.

Did this - easy. Instant email RE £20 top up and £5 bonus.

Never used paypoint before but so easy. Don't know what all the fuss is about
big.k
5 Sep 17 #155
To clear up a few questions on how this works.

Go to a paypoint station. Ask the operator to scan the barcode in, whether it's printed or on the phone. When the barcode is scanned in, the operator should see options for how much you would like to top up. The rest is easy.

Each barcode is unique to the account. For example, If I took Jim's barcode, Jim would get the money. You can keep rescanning that barcode as the system will produce the same barcode every time.

Going to print it out and try tomorrow unless anyone has any hints or tips.
Derek_Horatio_Shatwell
8 Sep 17 #159
Don't bother wasting printer ink or paper. My guess is, if they can't scan the phone, they won't be able to scan the printout.
Just ask for the Amazon Top Up Code thing, whatever its called. Make sure there's a code on the receipt.
Enter that code to your Gift Card balance when you get home. Then contact Amazon via Chat, Email or Phone and ask them to add the bonus.
Make sure to mention, that you want it added to your Gift Card balance, otherwise they are likely to add it to your Promotional Balance. Which is more restrictive on what you can spend it on.

I've tried at 3 different paypoint shops, the barcode just won't scan at all. I've cleaned the screen, increased brightness on my phone, it just doesn't work
OneGloveOnTheFence

Oh dear, Amazon have admitted there are issues with some PayPoints and they're getting it fixed asap. Just get them to do it manually and then ask Amazon for the credit.

I tried at Co-op and they couldn't scan the barcode either, so I got a gift code instead.

I had to go on Amazon chat to get the £5 applied, but it only took a couple of minutes and they did it without question.

just tried this at the Shell garage next door while getting some electric. Phone didn't scan so he had to go through the machine to print me off the voucher. He didn't believe me when I said it was to get £5 for free, it was ony when i got home and looked at the electricity receipt i noticed amazon/paypoint are advertising the offer on the bottom of it!

no £5 at the moment but will give it until this afternoon before I tackle live chat :disappointed:

This is a mess. I went to two stores, both said never heard of it ad didn't know what to do (one was Asda!) So I've been in touch with CS who have said just top up online and it will come up. I tried explaining this was not an email Ive had but a promotion Amazon are running...she didn't seem to know what it was either! She then said I could either top up online or buy a giftcard instore. Clearly not the same promotion but she asked me to top up online and will ring me in an hour to sort it if it doesn't come up by itself. I know I will get it in the end but what a run around!
