Note the HDMI 1.4 only. This AMLogic's attempt as a SOC to rival the cheaper Rockchip RK3229, so they have taken the old S905 and tweaked it to remove the full [email protected] feature and are calling it the S905w.
Amlogic S905W 2.0 Ghz (as long as AMLogic are not pulling a fast one like they did with the S912 speed) Mali-450 GPU 2Gb RAM 16Gb Storage TF card slot (max 32Gb size, so still stuck in the stone age here) 2.4Ghz WiFi only 10/100 Ethernet (although some say that it is actually Gigabit, so TBC) 2 x USB 2.0 Android 7.1 Remote control 5v/2a AC
Would not touch one with a barge pole myself right now until the reviews are in as it looks like a backward step to me and we don't know what dev take-up will be for cheap boxes.
But for those on a tight budget, worth having one more option to know about.
It might serve as a half decent Librelec box assuming that the S905 images will work out of the box.

Realistically, from the popular vendors, you are looking at £35-£40 for 2Gb S905x

Don't really see the point, can get an s905x 2gb ram box for £25-30 with libreelec it can play 140mbps 4k 10bit x265 hevc without even breaking a sweat (525mb for a 30 second clip). Seems daft getting down the cut down version to save under a fiver, especially as no libreelec support (currently) AFAIK.

Not everyone seeks a Libreelec box. I want the full android store and Android 7.1 for me Kodi is just another (very good) app.

I'm after a box pretty much just for playing 264/265 content off a stick. Is this box overkill? If so can anyone point me in the right direction please.

Most of these kinds of boxes will play X264/X265 files from a stick just fine, within any limitations of the SOC itself.
However, other factors may affect how well they perform, so unusually high bitrates can be problematic and HD audio passthough will vary from both box to box but also firmware.

What bandwidth are you looking at to get uhd streaming ? Just wondering as I'm sure I'll never get it !
Says code does not exist and raises the price to £30 lol

I just bought this box on pre-order from BangGood the price showing is about the same as Geekbuying's with discount code (when it works) and then you can apply code 11annv9% for 9% off.

Good spot.
That brings it down to £23.26

According to somebody claiming to be on the inside, AmLogic see themselves being ousted as number 1 in the Android TV box market and this is their response to be able to create a cheaper box, which will more satisfy the market for those that cannot afford the more expensive boxes, especially in China and the many that do not yet have 4K TV's.
S905x is more expensive but not by a whole lot and I don't believe for one minute that the price differential for switching from HDMI 2 to 1.4 would account for that, so would agree that it is a simple marketing ploy and personally I believe that this will be a very short lived SOC with low independent developer take-up to support.
It's around this time of year that we normally start to hear about the next generation of SOC's, so perhaps there is something around the corner that is set to become the next big thing.

that's what I mean, it is pointless budget cut chip. but it says ultra HD, but is worse than other s905 chips. you can get s905x boxes for this price. unless they drop prices considerably, it won't get support and sales will be low.

this chipset is crippled, the s905w does not do full uhd. it is marketing ploy by amlogic.

It handles [email protected] which is what they're advertising. I don't see any ploy. I don't see the point to the W revision myself but here we have it.
