I already have the smart thermostat. However I have like 50 radiators in my house so kitting everyone out isn't cheap. Can I like only buy two and create a separate zone for say one of the room? I don't get how this works though as the heating is not zoned in house and is either on or off. Ie what would happen if house was warm enough at thermostat , but that specific room still needed heat? Surely it couldn't turn heat on without turning whole house on???

Tado website can explain better than me but basically you can zone using individual TRVs. So I have my radiators (typically 1 per room) with a smart TRV on each and set that as a zone. I have a couple of rooms with 2 radiators so have 2 TRVs which are under the same zone. You can then switch the heating on by zone. For example, when I switch on my bedroom, all the other smart TRVs stay off, and heating just comes on in my room. Obviously you either need a smart TRV on each radiator for this to work or you stick with manual TRVs on rooms you don't use very often. My towel radiator and main hall radiator don't have a TRV so they always come on irrespective of which "zone" has been switched on. As you say, you cannot zone the heating fully.

Yes, a Tado starter kit is required. Either the radiator starter or the thermostat starter. The key is the "bridge" device which comes in the starter kit.

depending on the size of your home , a radiator stat in each room would save you a lot of money in time . if its a spare room you can adjust it down until used . ( keeps the cold / damp out )

Not really. A normal TRV doesn't have a temperature sensor.
It just has a control (normally 0-5 or 6) that opens up the valve on the radiator. If you leave your heating on all day and the TRV on 6, when you get home the room temperature will be very hot and will have wasted a lot of energy and money. The smart TRVs shut off when they hit a predefined temperature (which you can set in the Tado (or evohome etc) app or on the TRV itself).
As I said in my first post, most of this smart heating stuff is about personal preference, however, I'd anticipate this sort of technology is the future.

Yes, a normal TRV does have a temperature sensor - the clue is in the T which stands for Thermostatic. You are describing a simple radiator valve.
These systems are good if you want to have different temperatures in different rooms at different times, because they can set this up automatically, or to change room temperatures remotely.

Sensor was the wrong word. :blush: My point is that you don't know what the temperature is in the room as there is no visible reading.
Anyway, my post was intended to let others know of what I thought was a good deal, rather than debating whether these are worth getting. Hopefully it's helped some people as these are a bargain at this price. :grin:

I think it depends on the type and size of the house, and is also down to personal preference on comfort / convenience as well as saving money IMO. We are in a 1930s 4/5 bed house that has an extension at the back. The extension at the back faces south and is generally much warmer (2-3 degrees +) than the front (faces north, older part of the house).
In the winter, we have problems making the temperature of the house uniform - the back gets hot quickly ending up wasting heat & therefore energy, where as the front takes a longer time to warm up. I do have normal TRVs and could go around every room all the time and manually switch them up & down, but this is too much of a hassle IMO. So I needed a solution.
I could have gone with a Nest, Hive or equivalent but that wouldn't have solved the problem as this is just one thermostat in one location in the house with no way to regulate temperature across the house (unless you have multiple Nests, Hives etc installed).
With the Tado (or similar setups like Honeywell evo, Heat Genius etc), I can control each TRV as an independent "zone". So I can switch off rooms I'm not using (e.g. spare bedroom) and heat the other rooms. This should mean rooms I'm using get to temperature quicker and therefore the boiler is on less so saves energy/money.
Having said all of this, I have only had this in place for approx 3 months now so it hasn't gone through a Winter yet. But I'm hoping (and expecting!) it will help a lot.
For me, it's not all about saving money, but comfort / convenience as well.

There's a money back guarantee with the starter kit - if you're not happy you're saving money after six months, return it for a refund. What have you got to lose?
Think your missing the point ,, but yes some tvr's can be just as useful .

A pity they only limit to 3 per customer...
I don't think these will work with a Nest or Netatmo thermostat. They're different ecosystems. But they do work with Smartthings... if there's a way to link different systems via that...?
