Great price for the Steam Link - paid £15.99 for mine at Christmas and got a lot of use out of it - although be aware that if you have a Samsung Smart TV there is now a Steam app for it that will do the same job without extra hardware.
As for the controller, I'd love to be able to try one before I buy - heard good things about it but it's unconventional to say the least. My controller of choice for the PC is an Xbox One controller with Bluetooth, but next time I need a new controller or if I decide to get a second one I would consider the Steam controller.

OOS on the Steam Link

I gave up on the Steam controller almost as soon as I tried it. It just didn't seem right to me.
To be fair I think you have to get used to new things.
It may be good for the likes of Civ V in front of a TV instead of mouse and keyboard, but for first person shooters it just seemed wrong. Everyone I know that tried it felt the same.
Definitely try before you but imo.

I disagree on it not feeling right for shooters. I've got mine set up so the right pad does large scale camera movements (when you pull a trigger your thumb moves, so it's no good for accurate sniping unless auto-aim's on) and then when I press one of the back paddles it switches to 'high accuracy mode' using the internal gyroscope for aiming. Think of it like a button to hold your breath while sniping for greater accuracy.
What I'd say is that the steam controller feels light (I want to add more weight) and its biggest strength is also its biggest weakness, customisation. You can almost guarantee that out of the box the control scheme won't feel right for you, and for most folk that's when they stop using it. If you put in a little time tweaking it though, or trying out the configurations of other users, you'll find it can be far more powerful than a standard xbox 360 controller. If you consider the whole PC vs console argument boils down to one's easier, one's more flexible, I'd even say the steam controller is the perfect controller for PCs.

Dealing with a tailbone injury for months now and can only really game comfortably from the bed. PC gaming at the desk has been hell, so decided to nab one of these and hope I can get used to it. The learning curve seems fairly steep but I feel like it offers a good in-between solution.

I'm in a similar situation due to long term back problems and tbh I've found the best combo is a wireless xbox pad for games that need a controller and wireless keyboard and mouse for anything else.

Perhaps that's part of the answer too. I never got along with wireless KB/M really but I'm sure it would help. I was hoping this particular controller would kind of move towards that a little bit, at least in terms of playing games. It's frustrating getting the right combo going.

It needed a dpad on the left and just one trackpad on the right, then you have the perfect controller for PC for lots of games. Sadly I just find myself hating it because I cannot play so many indie and retro games without the dpad.

Amazing controller for the price.

How is this Steam controller compared to 360 pad?

Nooooooooooo! Paid £25 for one a couple of days ago because Game prices went back up :disappointed:
I tried one of these. After about a minute I said NOPE and went back to the DS4. Make of that what you will.

I've never had to try hard to like a controller.

You obviously didn't try even a bit if after only a minute you gave up.
It takes a bit of getting used to, but it is perfect for me. Especially on gta. precision for shooting like a mouse, but much better for driving than a keyboard. It is also useful because there are bindings for it for every single game on steam, and you can really easily customise it fully and rebind anything, even for mouse only games. That is a lot harder/impossible for some games on the xbox or ds controller.

Good price but I couldn't get used to it either. That and it downright doesn't work for some games like Enter the Gungeon, you have to constantly move your finger in the direction you want to shoot, you can't hold down in the direction.

I thought the touch pads could be configured to work like thumbsticks? Did you try the other community profiles?

Unfortunately I didn't know about them before I sold it :disappointed:

yes you can, the pads can be made to work like a mouse, a scroll wheel, a joystick, or a series of buttons, so you could just hold down in a direction, you just need to edit the profile, press the steam button when in game and the configure controller button is the second option

Oh, fair enough. I totally missed that option despite looking up my issue a lot :disappointed:
Absolutley the best controller for playing FPS and TPS on the couch once you get the hang of the gyro.
For twin stick shooters setting the right trackpad to mouse region usually works best. Although with Enter the Gungeon specifically I prefer a DS4. I haven't tried it with a steam controller in a while but it didn't accept controller and mouse inputs at the same time so you would only digital input on the analog stick when using mouse region. It's fantastic for Assault Android Cactus though.

I wish I'd played with the settings before selling... it did feel an impressive bit of kit but I can sometimes find too many options daunting. Also, I realised how much I love having the joysticks which rest my rest position naturally.

I don't think anyone really likes it at first. It takes a while to get used to and unless you enjoy tweaking and customising things it will always be a pain to setup compared to an xbox controller which just works. I've seen people call it a marmite controller and that seems the most fitting description. If you get the hang of the gyro though it makes flick headshots so much more satisfying than a controller, at least I presume it is, I can't hit flick headshots with an analog stick unless the controller aim bot is doing it for me  .

I guess it would have been nice of Valve to highlight this a bit better, I'd have stuck it out then. I heard the good control profiles are not official, that's a shame too, I'm happy to customise a bit but the out of the box experience should still be adequate
Also you can't grow to like marmite, otherwise I'd agree with the comparison!

The only games this controller is great for are games like guildwars anything else not so much.

You will see a lot of people judging this controller without really trying it for long enough, it takes about 2 weeks to get used to properly. Take a look at Woodies steam controller review on YouTube if your interested. I use mine for everything bar extended typing and first person shooters.

I bought this controller shortly after it was launched and I am thoroughly enjoying using it. The only thing I don't like is the haptic feedback but it can be disabled. Also it doesn't have the proper rumble effect. I use it for the most of my games except FPS and RTS genres. You can even get it work with the games outside of Steam. You just need to add a custom shortcut to Steam. For Origin games you need to add origin.exe shortcut to Steam not the actual game.

I ordered one yesterday evening and got it today (Saturday!).
It's pretty versatile. I'm using it to browse this website right now.
