If you want a reasonable price try the Shimano M065 MTB shoe £53 at Halfords but you can get them for £30 free delivery at Halfords own ebay shop (depending on your size availability) here:

Depends if the pedals on the exercise bike are standard bike pedals. Most of the exercise bikes I've used have standard bike pedals. I have these on my hybrid as sometimes don't always wear my SPD shoes and the M540 on my Diverge road bike and have to say the extra platform was good when first getting used to cleated shoes.

I thought these had always been this price?! I've fitted them on my bike about 2 years ago and still going strong. Decent pedals but still the same price as always.. no heat from me.

All Shimano stuff went up in price a lot in the last year, mostly due to exchange rates but also to do with raw material costs. To get them new today for the same price as 2 years ago makes this a pretty good deal.

I've fitted mtb peddles on my road bike as I thought these would be better for when commuting to work though I've heard that spd's are better for long distance cycling. Can someone explain why this might be? Does it really make a difference?

Thinks it's to do with the positioning of the cleat under your foot. These have a smaller contact area than other types

The smaller contact area can certainly be an issue. I used to wear mtb shoes on my road bike for a few years and enjoyed the superior walking ability it brought, particularly when navigating railway station stairs. However, when holidaying in the mountains I found that after a day of climbing my feet would sometimes be quite sore from standing up on the small cleats so much. I didn't have the same issue with road cleats/pedals/shoes. i can't be bothered to swap them over and 'remember' how to clip in/out so I don't use mtb ones anymore. Plus my mtb shoes really are very heavy. True story.

I use MTB SPD pedals on both of my road bikes with no problems. Roadies may stare a bit but they are much easier to walk on, you look proper t1t walking in roadie shoes.

The pedals dictate which type of shoes can be used. MTB shoes with cleats are fairly easy to walk in, but road shoes with cleats are very difficult. Road shoes are much lighter than MTB though, and so are better for long distances and speed. SPD versions are both pretty easy to clip in and out of. For commuting to work MTB shoes/cleats/pedals are probably best.

Maintain really, but it involved opening them up, cleaning the ball bearings, then Greasing up, resetting and fastening it all back togeather. im not a massive fettler and so if I have a spare hour I'll ride my bike over fettling.
Most people have time or money not both so an easy decision for me to buy these over fixing

I have spd pedals on my commuting road bike but only because I can walk as normal in my spd cycling shoes. For long distance then road pedals may be better but opinions differ.

I've had these on my bike for years. Very good - ok to unclip if required to give that extra bit of stability over 520s.
