Needed a portable drive to back up my data, searched around and found this was the best deal for a 4Tb drive that I could find. I wasn't aware of the free McAfee anti-virus software until I made the purchase at Argos.
The drive also comes with a 2 year recovery service, so your data can be recovered even in the event of drive failure, Seagate arrange collection and recovery. On registering your product, you can also extend this to 3 years for $4.99 (just under £4 via PayPal)
This was the best price I could find that was in stock, there is potentially 1% Quidco if you purchase via fast track.

To answer any potential questions: - YES you can use this on Xbox One and PS4 for external game backups, for both you will need to format the HDD specifically for the console meaning you can't use it for anything else UNLESS you format it again
- YES it doesn't require any external power as it's portable so just USB power needed
and NO you can't open this up and use it for PS4 either as the height is too much (over 9.5mm) so it can't physically fit however you can fit it in a laptop that supports it or even for desktop use.

Bought last week in the hope of using it to store and play movies via PS4. Seems you can't have both MAC and PS4 compatibility with this. Unless anyone knows otherwise?

Format to exFAT with an MBR partition table. Can do it all in Disk Utility on your Mac.
If you hit problems, try switching MBR to GUID.

I read that this Seagate series, particularly the 4GB model, have a high failure rate. Does anybody have any experience with this?

Anyone know if this drive uses SMR?
malhal to 3guesses

It doesn't use SMR because it's a Samsung drive inside. The new 2.5" Seagate Barracuda 5TB drives do however use shingled recording so watch out for the new portable hard drives from them.

It's £106 @ Scan Computers without McAfee Don't most ISPs now provide Anti-Virus software as part of their package?
Wouldn't go anywhere near McAfee or ISP provided AV. I recommend Avira (Free) / Kaspersky (Paid) (they're objectively the best)

Yes and slighty cheaper for the Maxtor branded case from th eBT shop £105 shop.bt.com/pro…BwE
However the Seagate case is easier to break into than the Maxtor/Samsung. And remember its all the same drive inside, the Samsung Spinpoint M10P 15mm 5x800GB platters.

One last thing, double check the laptop can take a 15mm drive as that's double the thickness of normal laptop drives.
