Pre-order only. Not in stock. I've had this and a few others on pre-order for a few weeks (possibly not this exact one) and had no updates or delivery estimate for any. I don't care which, I just want any now Vega is a waste of time and power

All 3GB cards - the cheapest 6GB has gone from £229.99 to £269.99,so this is still cheaper:

overclockers.co.uk/pc-…060

Gibbo from OcUK said the 6GB offer was only limited to a 1000 units and apparently they are all gone now.

They are also charge £10 for postage unless you post a lot on their forums whereas Amazon do free postage.

As you are also fully aware, the GTX1060 3GB also has 10% of its shaders lopped off when compared to the superior 6GB model.

People need to stop moaning - even the cheaper deals Overclockers UK were doing on the GTX1060 6GB were limited to 1000 units which soon sold out. I have done pre-order deals before from Amazon and so have friends, and have got big discounts on many items. Even the best deals on the GTX1070 now from companies such as Ebuyer are pre-order too.

If you can't wait, then pay the extra for an overpriced card which is in stock.

Miners have screwed it all up for gamers! :disappointed:

How hypocritical - because ultimately gaming achieves absolutely nothing, also isn't tangible (?) yet mining and securing the blockchain networks is actually helping your future, whether you like it or not cryptocurrency is here to stay - for miners, investors and even end-users.

And it's arguable that spending more money on GPUs for gaming and/or mining actually allows it to be funnelled back into R&D which benefits everyone.

17 Aug 17 #23
Absolutely nothing? I'm sure there's something, such as creativity, inspiration. You could even attribute some gaming to learning. Much more valuable than "money"

Helping my future? I seriously doubt it. I help my future in much better ways, like learning, understanding and thinking. Money is always a by-product.

What R&D is being conducted with these miners? I last read, they were looking for SHA2 collisions, not really that helpful in the grand scheme of things.
plewis00 to Dealmessiah
17 Aug 17 #26
I think that's more likely just what you tell yourself but ultimately it has less value than cryptocurrency (as a whole). And if you can't see the future in blockchain technology, even as a user of it then I guess you'll have to just wait, see and look back in 5-10 years. I mean, you do realise that's why they are starting to regulate it, because as a decentralised currency, it's largely free from corruption, manipulation, inflation, counterfeiting and all the other things you associate with 'money'.

As a former gamer and someone who does it casually now, there is honesty little value in it - people hide behind the internet but actually it's pretty rife with bullying, taunting and escapism from the real world. There is nothing creative or inspirational about gaming, it's an arbitrary world someone else created for you - I am not denying it's fun, but at some point you weigh up the opportunity cost of fun vs. reality. I'm also not saying you shouldn't game or spend your money on GPUs, I'm just saying I think it's incredibly ironic to say cryptocurrency is a waste of electricity for an intangible item (and let's face it, most fiat currency is digital, can you remember the last time you paid with cash vs. contactless or card?) when gaming is probably worse.

And R&D in future graphics and compute technology which improves your future generations of graphics cards - I thought that was pretty obvious. In fact I suspect you are the only person who thought I meant researching crypto algorithms or mining... Also SHA-256 is for Bitcoin, the algorithms differ, but as we're talking GPUs, you're probably most annoyed at Ethereum which is Dagger-Hashimoto.
Nate1492 to plewis00
17 Aug 17 #27
The end result of decentralized currency is fine, but what exact benefit does *mining* have on the world?

Why is it better to send them cycles of GPUs instead of SET or some other folding place?

Why do we care about the crypto portion of this decentralized currency?

Isn't it just arbitrary and, as put, a waste of electricity?
plewis00 to Nate1492
17 Aug 17 #28
Do you have a better way of handing out the tokens then? The crypto part is kind of arbitrary, yes, and as you commented in another thread you probably know the end-game of Ethereum will be in PoS not PoW (gamers rejoice). The crypto portion is important because it's self-securing, you can't modify part of the blockchain or data without interfering with the rest. If it was computationally easy, anyone smart or computer-skills with a mobile phone or netbook and hacking skills could do it.

I think you can argue that mining (certain) precious metals for the sake of jewellery is equally as pointless; no intrinsic value and 'it's only worth what someone is willing to pay'.

Because mining encourages the sale of GPUs, it does encourage more development and research into faster computation which ultimately benefits everyone.
Nate1492 to plewis00
18 Aug 17 #54
The 'mining precious metals' bit has some bearing of truth but there are plenty of precious metals that are indeed useful.

Gold has value, intrinsic value, but not at the level it is currently traded. It is not a stable currency, but you can't 'make it up'. You can only find it from a complex mining operation (sure, similar).

But the thing is, you can see/hold/limit gold without any doubt. There is still doubt in mining. Someone controls the means of production and can do nearly whatever they want.

So it's arbitrary and it's manipulable. That's a recipe for future problems
plewis00 to Nate1492
18 Aug 17 #55
That's why I said 'certain' metals - obviously gold, silver, platinum, etc. have real use but it's inflated because people want to use/waste it on jewellery which has no practical value.

Whether something is 'tangible' or not doesn't really change anything if you think hard about it. Paper cash is no more valuable than what the government says it's worth.

If you think someone can change cryptocurrency and controls it centrally then I think you've missed the fundamentals - someone 'invented' it but it's secured by the miners/users now and one single entity cannot change it. You remember that big uproar at the start of the month with Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash - that would be an example of a change resulting in a fork.

en.bitcoin.it/wik…get

I'd suggest that, perhaps, I do know what I'm talking about. And I'd go as far to say, maybe you don't?

But what's the point now? Someone controls the target difficulty.
plewis00 to Nate1492
18 Aug 17 #51
You quoted Wikipedia as a source (seriously...) and Bitcoin (that no-one mines with GPUs) - while I was prepared to have a reasoned debate but apparently that's beyond you...

The target rate is set by the network, it even says that in your source - and is the same for Ethereum, if the network produces a block too easily (broadly speaking) it (the network, not 'man in tower') increases the difficulty and vice versa. Yes, at some point, someone arbitrarily set it and now it's set in place by the protocol and no one person/entity can change it (other than a theoretical 51% attack), which I'm pretty sure was the point we were discussing.

So what is your point with this exactly? Someone doesn't control the target difficulty, it's a function of the entire network.

I just looked and virtually every comment of yours recently has been on graphics cards or AMD - do you have options in crypto and/or money invested in nVidia/AMD?!
Nate1492 to plewis00
20 Aug 17 #56
I'm flattered you'd dig through my comments and gloss over them, without actually looking, then make an assumption and some comment about an investment.

No, I don't have any AMD/NVIDIA investment other than I appreciate the truth.

So, the TL;DR of your response is "Yes, you are right, there is some arbitrary control that is not transparent that controls the currency".

You can pretend all you want that it is infallible and perfect, but it's not. I've pointed out a glaring problem with it, and you are happy to hand wave it off and point to a general concept that I "Comment in AMD/NVIDIA threads".

You could also note that I comment in Intel threads, monitor threads, PSU threads, and other... Gosh, computer hardware threads.

Anyway, I think I'm checking out, you took this to a personal/stalker level, I'm not on board, take care.
plewis00 to Nate1492
20 Aug 17 #57
You suggested one person/entity controls it; you could say the same for normal currency (e.g. Bank of England with interest rates). You made out as if someone fancies it they can just come and ruin it for everyone which they can't. I clicked on your profile to see if the majority of your comments were this and it's just generic misguided and uninformed antagonism against others in the same usual threads.

No idea why you don't or won't understand cryptocurrency but like you said no point in wasting more time and energy - I'd just like to stateit was fairly interesting discussing it til you decided you knew everything and had no ability to process anyone else's opinion. Oh well.
Nate1492 to plewis00
20 Aug 17 #59
You are suggesting crypto currency is free form the same follies and troubles as regular currency, I stated that it has similar control structures.

Who said anything about 'a single person' being in control?

I have no idea why you actually think I don't know a little something about crypto, but on your head. Oh well!

You are complaining about something I did, but you are absolutely doing it yourself. You are refusing to acknowledge something and you took this to a witch hunt through my comments and made it personal. I don't want to discuss with you because you are not entering this conversation on an even level, you are acting pompous and rude.

Good bye, lets stop!

You just can't...

I had written back, I've deleted it. I don't need or want conflict so let's just agree to disagree - if you want the last word that's fine but can you leave the thinly-veiled insults out this time.

You don't need it unless you're moving your PC around a lot or like the aesthetics. A lot of this stuff is optional - like heatsinks on RAM that are largely proven to just look nice and make handling safer. Personally I wouldn't bother with it, save your money.

Thanks. Need to decide what to do about Windows licence as well. My old system ran Windows 7. New one is on Windows 10. Cheapest legal way to get a licence? Never got the free upgrade albeit I think you can still do the free upgrade. Neded to install Windows 7 first though.

New Ryzen system loaded windows in 6 seconds from booting up. The ram in Bios is running at 3200mhz after bios update. So Ryzen is fully operational ram wise. New GPU will make this a great gaming system. Need to play about with wires but it should be fine.

If you have Windows 7 then you can use Assistive Technologies for the 'free upgrade'. It's not 'illegal' but it does violate the EULA so it's kind of up to you. I think other than buying a full copy, the 'least grey' way of getting it is to get a 7 OEM key from a scrapped machine or similar and upgrade it using Assistivd Tech. Never do those key only purchases as they tend to be MSDN or dev accounts that might work initially and get broken later.

Was that the deal from Amazon.de? Mine arrived last week and MSI cashback was approved. The downside to Amazon only taking payment on dispatch is that the exchange rate was worse by the time it was sent, so that's something to watch if ordering from a foreign Amazon.

Like you I also moved from console to pc a few years ago. Was the best thing i had ever done and enjoyed a range of different games with improved graphics. I then started to get parts packing up and changed my gpu but had serious combatibility issues leaving me with constant problems, games cutting out, poor optimisation and crashes. Got sick of it and realised I was paying much more. I switched back to console, to a PS4 and soon realised whilst certain games didnt quite look as good I enjoyed the range of games not available on PC more rather then the other way round (uncharted, horizon z dawn, until dawn, etc) I was back to enjoying games again and my rather expenisve pc is now building up dust!

So tempted to get this, prices on ebay are in this range or up second hand, so it's likely to hold quite a bit of value until I find a suitable replacement some 6-18 months down the line.

When Eth goes PoS, which I understand is this year, will this keep it's value at all? Or will the whole market come crashing down? Surely there's always SOMETHING to mine with a GPU, right?
plewis00 to Zoea
17 Aug 17 #32
I think those of us invested in it (me, for one and by it I mean the actual holding of cryptocurrency) and believers don't think it will crash down as such. I would buy a GPU now if you can enjoy it for gaming, but maybe you can re-purpose it for some light mining when you're not gaming. I know of many gamers who game and mine (when not gaming) and basically pay for their card this way. If it's not Ethereum, you have Monero (XMR), Zcash (ZEC), Ethereum Classic (ETC), Decred (DC), Siacoin (SC), etc. there are hundreds of altcoins to look into but those would be my picks.

Scan shows release date 14th September. Seems strange they have to rerelase all these cards due to no stock. Absolutely bonkers.

This seems a good price? How does it compare to the 1060?

Main issue on these cards seem to be heat compared to the 1060 cards. Albeit the 1060 cards are grossly over priced. Albeit after 5 years how much more have you spent on electricity powering the 580 cards?

Will a gold rated 650 watt PSU be enough for this card.

You can get the Nitro+ model on Amazon too for £240ish. The reviews I have read suggest this should retail for $225. So add 20% vat take off 30% for dollar gives around £200. Cheapest history price I found was £210 in last 1-2 years.

Volta will also arrive in new year. I updated my post above. Slow posting.

Main concern is power usage and am I over doing it for a casual gamer? 650watt power supply gold rated.

Also I read these cards use an 8 and 6 pin connector?
plewis00 to gummby
17 Aug 17 #40
That is fine, 6-pin is 75W and 8-pin is 150W plus the PCIe slot another 75W so that's 300W max realistically for your card and it's unlikely the rest of the system will use the rest of your power budget. As long as it's a good branded 80 Plus Gold supply, have seen enough faked 'certified' ones or random brands - who makes yours

RedRain
25 Aug 17 #67
when are these due in stock anyone know
gummby to RedRain
28 Aug 17 #68
That is the issue. No one really knows. Most of AMD's mid/high end Graphics lines seem to be out of stock. Vega 64 sold out in most places. Vega 56 (Will likely sell out today within an hour.) RX580 mostly sold in most retailers. Same for the RX570. (Not looked at the R9 nano chips.)

Where there seems to be Nvida 1060/1070 stock in a few retailers. This is one of the reasons Nvida has no real reason to be price competitive. As you simply can't buy any of the top tier AMD products.

Scan is showing 30th September for the RX580 model. Other sites 31/08/2017 and 06/09/2017. I suspect Scan is the only one to have updated their date. So at least a month. I suspect they will sell out quickly on Amazon due to pre orders.

The price seems to be jumping around again. I hate it when Amazon do this (and don't understand why). Currently £246.96 but I expect that'll change again by the end of the day! I remember when the RX580 first came out, the Amazon price for the 4gb card seemed to drop every night at about 9pm - that was to £195 - how I wish I bought one back then!

Still no estimated arrival date for this 8gb card... which is very frustrating! Would be nice to have a rough estimate - is it going to be a week, month or longer as some others sites have dates ranging from tomorrow (31/08) all the way to the end of September. I just want the damn card!

ETA seems to be rumours, at the moment.
