Just been to Dublin using Ryanair. About 2 months ago they sneakily introduced a system where if you didn't pay for designated seats they deliberately split you up. I was sitting in row 6 and my wife was row 29 yet when I looked at the available seating 3/4 of the seats were available. Always booked as soon as online check in was available and always ended up with adjacent seats with my wife. Apparently there was a report on this a few weeks ago on Watchdog and a Ryanair air representative made a feeble attempt saying they hadn't changed their policy

One reason why I avoid Ryanair unless they are significantly cheaper
afroylnt to jona77
7 Aug 17 #4
Clearly they have changed their process to split people up forcing you to pay to sit near someone. Stil if the starting price is low enough you just need to factor this in. What if you both book separately?

At least they are being honest of their aim to be the airline of last resort.

And you didn't switch seats? Lol

When ever I fly and it's half empty I just go somewhere where there is free row and chill on two seats

Not able to sit next to my wife for a legitimate reason..... I'm booking right now yeha!!!!!

It would have cost you about £8 to reserve your seats. It can't have come as a shock, when you check in it tells you the seats you have been allocated. Then even gives you an option to pay and sit together.

I'm glad they do this. If they had seat allocation for 'free' it would only increase the base fare
huwy123 to lidds
7 Aug 17 #20
It doesn't cost Ryanair any more money to sit you together. Their policy of deliberately separating people is just a shameless money making exercise.
lidds to huwy123
7 Aug 17 #23
No it doesn't but by charging for it they can make more profit from extras such as seating, therefore allowing them to keep the base fare low.
No one is forcing people to fly with them
roguesspam to lidds
7 Aug 17 #21
If you think that it affects the ticket price, youre an idiot. Tho you say youre glad that they split ppl up, so youre probably just an idiot regardless.
lidds to roguesspam
7 Aug 17 #24
So if they suddenly sit everyone together or allow you to pick your seat for free how are they going to make the same profits without increasing base fares?

I am glad that they have this policy I fly to Ireland at least once a month and can get a return ticket for £20. I don't care where I sit so would much rather the current policy than have my base fare increase and get one for 'free'

Again no one is forcing you to fly Ryanair, when you check in they clearly tell you exactly which seat you are in and then give you the choice to pay for the one you want.

This allows those who want to pay an opportunity to get the 'better' seats.

Just be aware Christmas markets start around 24th nov definitely the case for Nuremberg as I went last year and just missed it by a day.
Good prices, also agree that book your seats in advance or you will be split up.

I'd make sure you book refundable accomodation.

I booked flights with Ryanair in November 17 for my wife and I to go for a long weekend in Ukraine from Manchester. A few months after booking I got an email saying they were cancelling the flight and I could get a refund or rebook onto a different flight. Annoyingly I had booked accomodation through airbnb and because they were strict I only got a 50% refund.

So I decided a weekend in Teneriffe would be nice so rebooked to that, again from Manchester in November. 2 weeks later - flight cancelled.

I then asked to booked onto a Liverpool - Teneriffe flight in October. Week later - email - flight cancelled.

I since asked for a refund and booked a return flight with wizz air. Still waiting for the refund from Ryanair!

7 Aug 17 #8
Pretty sure they charge if you book in advance for seat choice .online free check-in if like easy jet is a not available to near departure time.
Yes Ryanair maybe cheap but why do they insist on being total ar$%ho+$.Is it really necessary or just that idiot Michael Leary .Surely you would want a good reputation for service not just price .

Ha ha Paul! As it happens I was glad we were separated on the outbound flight my wife was in a foul mood! :astonished: And no I couldn't switch seats as the flight was full
paulandpam1 to jona77
7 Aug 17 #17
But it can work out badly if your separated, I flew back from Palma to Liverpool on the 24th July and the woman I had to sit next to had a snarl on her like a Bulldog chewing a wasp, I would have gladly sat next to my wife if there was an empty seat by her.But I agree Ryanair need to read a dictionary to find what 'random allocation' actually means because it is not random in any way when they seat couples rows apart and nearly always in middle seats to pi$$ people off.

jona77
7 Aug 17 #19
Lidds you're missing the point. I've flown with Ryanair for numerous years have never paid for an allocated seat yet always sat with my wife. Plus if you're talking prices even last year I could fly to Dublin for £9.99 each way at off peak times of the year. This year most flights to Dublin from Manchester are at leat £19.99 which is an increase of 100%! And basic fuel costs have fallen so Ryanair can't blame that for the increase! It's called a sneaky add on if you google it there have been thousands of complaints so much so it caught the attention of watchdog on BBC1
lidds to jona77
7 Aug 17 #25
I'm sure there are more costs than just fuel...
I too have been flying with them for years. I use them to go to Dublin from Leeds at least once a month, and find it amazing that I can still get a return flight for £20 (not noticed the same increase you have). So in 5 years + since I have been doing that there have been zero increases.
If this is what they have to do to keep basic fares down then I'm more than happy with that.

On the flip side if it is 'shameless' money making as someone else said then so what? Their not a charity at the end of the day. Your not forced to travel with them. Do the same people moan that Morrison's make money on a loaf of bread ?

I fly with them once or twice a year and haven't had any complaints. I'll find out if this "splitting up a couple" activity happens in October when I am off to Barcelona for weekend.
Robbo11 to Searcher2
8 Aug 17 #37
Rest assured that you will be sitting next to strangers unless you care enough to pay for the 'privilege' of sitting with your partner. You could always try asking to swap seats with someone once on board or if it's not a full flight, find empty seats to nab but neither are definites. Since May, when Ryanair changed their free seating allocation algorithm, they now allocate free seats by letter order rather than row number starting with the middle B, then E seats first, then when those are gone, the C then D aisle seats. The window A and F seats are allocated last of all. Ryanair are also threatening to reduce the free cabin baggage allowance because (they say) customers are abusing their cabin bag size rules.

7 Aug 17 #29
Honestly, don't. We just got back from Gran Canaria with them. This new abhorrent seating system to con you out of more money to sit next to your loved ones is the icing on a very high, multi-tier cake of absolute crookery.

We booked our family of seven in. The system purposefully sits you as far apart as possible, to then charge you up to £19 EACH to sit next to each other on check in. Yup. I had to pay £17.50 to sit next to my ten year old sister, who was sat on her own more than 15 rows away from her mother so I could comfort her as she dislikes flying.

On the way back, we decided not to pay and hope for at least one free seat next to someone or someone willing to swap. Guess what. When we got on the plane, there were free seats everywhere. So all seven of us had four connecting rows between us, with extra seats lying down or electrical. Michael o Leary is a greedy con man.
lidds to SeanMozzy
7 Aug 17 #31
Factor seating cost into the price of the holiday then. No one is forcing you to use them
SeanMozzy to lidds
7 Aug 17 #32
Exactly! However, by sharing OUR experience those considering this deal will book with a broader idea of what EXACTLY they are going to pay for further down the line. Because this little con in particular doesn't happen until you try to check in, long after you've booked. And yes, we ourselves have GLADLY booked Easy jet for next year. Thanks for the concern. Cheers! :raised_hand:
paulandpam1

Even the cabin crew know the seating arrangement is a con and try their best to re-arrange families before take off.
My last flight reminded me of a kids birthday party playing musical chairs.

Lidds you're the only one supporting Ryan airs new seating policy! You're not related to Michael o Leary now are you?! :astonished: For the record I'm flying back over to Dublin in November with.............Aer Lingus! Let's see if they adopt the same policy as Ryan Air!
lidds to jona77
7 Aug 17 #34
I'm the only one who thinks what they have done over the last 10-15 years has been great. They have opened up air travel to millions of people who previously couldn't afford it. Those that could its allowed them to have extra £ left over or see even more places. You can visit a range of EU countries for the cost of a round at the pub. Yet people cry like little babies because they can't sit where they want for a few hours. (Well they can but it's easier to moan)
mickgoodie
7 Aug 17 #35
over the years of flying with ryanair I could not fault them. you pitch up early, print off your boarding passes, and bring the correct hand luggage.....all sorted, no hassle, quids in!

Until earlier today when I checked in for my Lisbon flights this morning.....WTF! ok I refused to pay the extra £12 for me and the misses to sit next door to each other, but she was allocated row 6, and I got row 33.. The lowest of the low for certain with this new BS seating policy. Admittedly this is my 25th wedding anniversary trip to Lisbon, yes i was feeling tight at the time of check in, but only because I felt the flights were over priced!
oh welll, hopefully O'leary will learn from this. I briefly saw him on Newsnight last week getting ripped over Brexit and their summer 2019 schedule.......
6ixFoot1
8 Aug 17 #36
Got a flight next week. Got 3 seats allocated for free as children need to be next to an adult. So we got one row next to the window. The first seat in the middle row next to our seats is still free. Was thinking they'd give us it because we're all together. Now reading all these comments, I just booked it to be safe, £5 each way.
lyndon2
8 Aug 17 #38
The cheapest prices by a long way and your moaning about paying for a seat together,go and pay an extra £100 and fly with jet 2 then!
mickgoodie
15 Aug 17 #39
I agree with Robbo11 over the comments over hand luggage. Came back from lisbon last night and they went through most peoples bags, and some unlucky people who had no issues with their bags coming out all of a sudden were demanded to pay for their bags to be stored in the planes hold. Ryanair will head down the same route as wizzair IMHO, where anything cabin baggage you place under the seat will be free, and anything you store in the overhead lockers will be charged!!!
