This is a discontinued model. Good for £149, but the Rega Planar 1 is a big improvement.

Got this on the last deal for 129. Really nice player and easy to setup. Cds still sound better to my ear.

How does this compare to a Rega Planar 1? I haven't got a clue how any of it works so forgive my dull question.

Good price, I bought it last week for the 179 they'd reduced it to. My first vinyl setup and they helped me with a system and amp etc. and it works amazingly, so glad I finally got myself one

Would those in the know recommend going for this or taking a step up to the rega planar I (£250) or something similar? What would be a good amp/speakers to have in a system with either of these turntables? I have no particular budget but this will be my first system so I need some guidance!

At this end of the price scale, both the Project and the Rega will give you similar performance (i.e. decent for the money but won't shake your world).
There are plenty of T amps for sale on Amazon at around £50. amazon.co.uk/Gem…amp
You will need a phono amp too, can be as cheap as this if you want amazon.co.uk/Av-…amp
General guidance is to spend the most money on transducers (turntable cartridges and speakers) the electronics in the middle don't matter as much. Get any speaker cables, don't be fooled by the expensive nonsense that some manufactures sell.

Thanks for the detailed post. Am I completely off the mark by considering either of the two turntables paired with a Onkyo A9010?

Not at all, the 9010 won best amp under £300 in What hi-fi awards. whathifi.com/onk…iew I'd personally go for the Rega Planar 1. I have a Project Carbon 2 and have had issues with noise which their engineers have given different fixes for. Thinking about upgrading to a Rega Planar 3.

I wouldn't touch a low-end Pro-Ject again (to be honest I won't touch a high end one either) simply for the fact they were quite happy to knowingly release turntables with rumble/motor isolation issues galore, offer no solutions of their own and despite buying a third party kit (which they later incorporated into their more expensive revisions) that is supposed to fix this issue, it's still present on my Debut III which cost even more than this.
I haven't heard of any rumble issues with Rega turntables, but never tried them myself.

I have the Q Acoustic 2010 speakers and they are excellent. Tempted now to pair them with this TT deal

Before buying, check you amplifier has a phono input because this model doesn't have a built in pre-amp on the line output. A lot of modern home cinema amps need this. If not, you can buy a separate phono stage amplifier for about £20-30.

Speakers is really up to you, Q Acoustics 3010 or the older 2010i are brilliant for the money.
