If you are interested in homebrew (region free, play game backups, emulate old consoles, play gamecube games on the vWii, edit saves etc etc) check the version of your Wii U BEFORE going online with it as it will automatically update. If it is 5.5.2 you are straight out of luck, but if it is 5.5.0 or 5.5.1 (pretty likely if it is a used console as 5.5.2 only dropped a month ago) you can follow the guide here to block further system updates and install homebrew.

I tried to stop my Wii U updating by selecting no automatic updates and changing codes access codes. However as soon as I connected to the internet so my son could use the YouTube app the update started automatically. So don't go online with your Wii U at all if you are thinking of home brew. There are hints that the crunchy roll app may have a way to exploit through the adverts but nothing availed to general users yet. I might be buying a second Wii U just for homebrew.

If you want just Homebrew you're better off with the original Wii... But I guess you're after "Homebrew"

If you change your DNS settings to those in the link I posted your Wii will not be able to communicate with Nintendo update servers.

I did change the DNS settings and it still updated. Maybe when I changed the WiFi connection. Thought changing DNS settings was a one of job but maybe every connection needs DNS settings changing ???

The DNS settings would need to be set for each new connection on the Wii I think as it sets them all up as default to start. You may be in luck however if you have a read over here and on the linked gbatemp thread it looks like another web exploit has been found which allows Haxchi to be installed on 5.5.2. I've only skimmed it but it's worth a look.

Using homebrew, can any game be played on the gamepad screen?
Possibly this. Haven't looked into it myself though.

Just got mine (paid for next day). Pad is pretty immaculate (on screen it has no scratches!). Console is more beaten up though - I think its mainly grubby. Almost looks like two separate parts got combined... At work so not tested it yet. No stand either but i'll just buy a cheap one...

Never trust Games "fair condition". Bought another wii u for the spare room, gamepad had deep scratches and console was badly scratched. Missing stylus also

Thank you. Has anyone else any experience buying the Wii U from Game? I couldn't care about the console being in bad shape, just want a decent gamepad.

Perhaps I was just unlucky with my gamepad. Yet I can't believe game would except a traded in console with deep scratches on the screen.

I bought one a few weeks ago, almost same deal, but with Mario 3D instead of Zelda. I can't complain about the state of the gamepad, a few very faint scratches on the back, stylus was there, screen was pretty mint, no box, which as it had one in the photo, I was hoping for one. I don't regret it at all. But I guess it's luck of the draw. No stand for the console though, that was annoying.
If you do buy it, buy Breath of the Wild, yes I know it's expensive and I can't see it dropping much for the foreseeable future (and then it will possibly become collectable and not go down anyway), but it is an amazing amazing game, absolutely enormous and since we got it, we haven't played another Wii U game.

I completely agree breath of the wild is a totally awesome game. I got a preowned wii U from Amazon for 109 on 5.5.1 - homebrew very easy and looks like a 5.5.2 homebrew method is coming soon. At around £100 to play that one game it's worth it. You are going to have some scratches just get over it - it doesn't matter. Mine didn't have a dock but I got one from game for £2 and also a high capacity battery for the gamepad which was £14 I think. Completely worth it.

I just bought myself a Wii U this week, and I have to say what an underrated console. I got mine off Gumtree and playing Mario 3D World on the Gamepad screen while my wife watches soaps on TV is just awesome haha.

Tbh it's a fair price unless you get a gamepad in crappy condition with the 2 games boxed. Way more appropriate than what nintendo charged for it anyway. --- On a side note I'm kind of an idiot for possibly updating mine a while ago, I assumed nintendo were done with updates and homebrew would've probably catched up so decided to keep up to date. Though it looks like there are other options should I start.

How are you finding these deals?! I check the Game and CeX website regularly, along with HUKD obviously... looking out for a price tag and bundle I cannot miss. I can never find these types of deals/bundles on the game website! Even when you post it on here and I can get to it on the link, I can't find it through their search options. Can someone help me understand please....
My game will take a console back if you buy online and change your mind.... Worth a go or will prices drop even further in a few months?

My local Game act dumb if you have issues and say their not "connected" to the online store so have to deal with them directly. Worse shop experience second only to CEX.
