This was half the price on prime day. It's good for today's price and if you're itching to get going with a hue set up but I feel like it's capable of being lower than this??

It's the same kit, they've not released a V3 (Richer Colours) version of the GU10 bulbs. Prime Day this year was the first time I'd seen the GU10 kit heavily discounted from RRP, normally just the B22 & E27 kits go on offer.

A question about any one who has used these. I need to replace my bathroom lights as they are not powerful enough. Does these have good brightness level?
OllieSt to rommy
22 Aug 17 #6
It obviously depends on what you're looking to improve on. How many spots do you have and what are they (wattage and temp)

What I can say from personal experience that the one colour ambiance bulb I have and the 2m of colour lightship I have never get used for their colour.
rommy to OllieSt
22 Aug 17 #12
I am not sure of specs of my current setup. Its a new apartment and in their rush to complete on time the developer has used really low powered lights. Its been more than a month and they are still waiting for correct lights to arrive from their supplier.

Its two spot lights setup in the bathroom and also spotlights through out the apartment. The priority is to have brightest lights in the bathroom. I though these might be a good option and smart functionility would be a good bonus.
OllieSt to rommy
23 Aug 17 #15
Before buying into Hue you need to understand what's involved. So you fork out £99 here and you use the 2 bulbs (it's a straightforward bulb replacement if you already have mains LED, a lamp holder replacement if you have mains halogen, and a removal of transformer(s), and lamp holder replacement if you have low voltage spots.

Now you've got your new bulbs in the bathroom and if you use the existing lightswitch you will have no proper control. You can buy a remote that can be programmed for different scenes (bright light for a shower, dimmed coloured light for relaxing bath, you can buy sensor so lights come on bright in the morning and dim in the evening but it's tricky with a bathroom because you may just go in there at anytime.

Otherwise it's app controlled from phone
Arghness to rommy
22 Aug 17 #7
I have not used these, but the lumens in the spec is very low. What wattage (if halogen) or lumen output are your current bulbs? The output from these seems to be less than a 20W halogen.

Edit: it looks like they get a bit brighter at other colours (probably a colder white)
haritori to rommy
23 Aug 17 #14
Id recommend in Innr ones for white light, they are brighter and cheaper.. if you need colour ones then the Hue are prob your best choice.
OllieSt to haritori
23 Aug 17 #16
Is that fixed white or one that have temp change? How do they integrate with the Hue system (I''ve heard there can sometimes be a bit of lag)
haritori to OllieSt
23 Aug 17 #20
I think they are not colour temp, warm white, I have a couple of inner ones and they are a little slower than hue but if they weren't mixed you wouldn't notice but you can get 4 innr for 58.99 which I found important as my kitchen uses 8 in the ceiling and then 2 more in a cupboard

I bought the colour bulbs on prime day I've found them to be gimmicky, I only use whites the house is kitted in hue whites now only my games Room has colour bulbs and the lounge has ambience, and one colour in the landing with a motion sensor I use as an orange night light
one2omg to rommy
23 Aug 17 #23
The first issue you will have, is to ensure your spot lights are deep enough to hold the colour GU10's in them. The white & ambiance will be fine.

As for brightness, I'd go out on a limb to say yes, they'll be bright enough. Unless of course you want your bathroom to light up like an alien invasion, in which case, I'd suggest more bulbs.

I'm a big fan of Philips Hue but cannot justify the price of their GU10 bulbs, good thing Ikea's smart bulbs (TRÅDFRI) are now compatible with Hue (unoffically). £12 per gu10... I have them and they work flawlessly.

Can you tell me how you get this working with the Ikea bulbs? Ive been following this thread and it seems theres new firmware available now from Ikea to support this developers.meethue.com/con…e=2
pearson to kklown
23 Aug 17 #41
Ok so I had to purchase the TRÅDFRI hub and switch and set this up on my home network first. Then install the bulb and turn it on ( I put my hub close to the bulb).
The TRÅDFRI will then detect the bulb via the app and begin a firmware update (in the background of the app but you can check the completion status if required - mine took about 30 minutes to do).
Next you'll need to remove the bulb from the TRÅDFRI hub via the app and then reset the bulb by flicking the light switch 6 times (bulb will then blink).
I disconnected the TRÅDFRI hub and went to hue app and searched for bulb, again placing near to the light as possible, took a few tries but it eventually found it!

These are superbright and worth the hassle for the cost saving as I don't need colour, only the ice white which is £49 per bulb from Philips Hue!
OllieSt to pearson
24 Aug 17 #42
I wonder in the future if the Ikea bulbs will already have the firmware update so there will be no need for the TRÅDFRI hub.
pearson to OllieSt
24 Aug 17 #43
Yes, eventually the bulbs will be released with the latest firmware so they should work directly out the box, although because they are not officially supported it may be an idea to have the £25 TRÅDFRI hub incase you need to perform a firmware downgrade or update if they lose compatibility - I wouldn't be surprised if Philips intentially make a move to stop the compatibility.

I don't have the Color GU10s. I have a 3 Ambience and colour BC22s. Unless in a cool white the brightness is lower.
Compared to some 6.5W GU10s I have the ambience GU10/ are a bit duller

Heat! Great price, especially if you sell the hub and keep it just for the bulbs!

How do these work with the existing switches? Do you need to leave the main wall switch in the on position constantly and control via the app only?

My concern is the kids using the switch, then the app not working because the main switch is off, it seems like it could be a hassle. How have others got around this?
OllieSt to ourdevonfamily
23 Aug 17 #24
You need to set up so kids have no need to use switch, and a sensor is the answer.

I run on a sensor very successfully in the kitchen. It's worth knowing the sensor is not brilliant on detecting slight movement, but there are ways around it. You can control how many minutes lights stay on after non activity. Default I choose here is 2 minutes. That's pretty much fine for me if I'm in the kitchen doing anything other than sitting down in dining area. There's an annoying blank spot that could be resolved by adding a 2nd sensor, but a free solution is to change from 2 minutes to 10 minutes. Very very occasionally I will need to move out of blank spot after 2 minutes (it's literally 1 step away from counter areas) and more tweaking of sensor position may remove this necessity completely. The sensor is completely overridden to off if the room is deemed bright enough which is user set.

I have 3 'zones' in the kitchen.

1. Kitchen table light
2. Kitchen downlights
3. Kitchen strip light.

I have created groups called

Kitchen all (1,2,3)
Kitchen table/downlight(1,2)
Kitchen downlight and strip (1,3)

Below is how I choose to control lights

7am - 8am weekdays kitchen table/downlight - ON - overriding sensor completely (this overcomes non movement around table for breakfast for my son), he used to complain lights went off. Now if I could find a way of automatically turning off his phone during this time I would pay handsomely for it.

8am - 7pm all days kitchen all - sensor using my default 2 minutes - my preferred brightness and colour temp used.

7pm-8pm all days kitchen all but sensor now set to 20 mins (overcomes eating at table with non movement)

8pm - midnight all days Kitchen downlight and strip - back to 2 min default with warmer lighting and dimmer.

midnight -5am all days Kitchen light strip - dimmed 2 min default - (gives night light to get glass of water etc)

5am - 8am - kitchen all - sensor using my default 2 minutes - one off brightness and colour temp used.

All of the above is set up using iConnectHue which is an IOS app. It's better than official Hue app and I'm unsure if the above could be done on an android app.

Porch light - On at dusk, off at dawn

Bedroom lights alexa dot controlled but off as I leave home

Thanks. Can you post a link the sensors you are using and if there are any alternatives you would buy instead if purchasing again
OllieSt to loofer
23 Aug 17 #31
Sensor and I would buy again, my kitchen area is the most complex area in my home and it works. I'm unsure if 3rd party sensors work.

As a side note if you absolutely must have a light switch you can use the following combo:

Dimmer switch plus switch adaptor. The adaptor is 3d printed and it's good quality. Pay attention to the variant that you require (depth of existing light switch). I didn't choose 0mm (replaces existing switch), just in case of internet outage.
deeky to ourdevonfamily

You can't get around the kids switching the switch off. If they are switched off they won't work.
FlowsInYou
23 Aug 17 #22
Yes you'll need to leave the current switch on and only control from your smartphone OR purchase the Philips Hue Wireless Lighting Dimmer Switch:
amazon.co.uk/dp/…VX8

This is the setup I use, just requires a bit of training to only use this to turn on/off/dim - or your smartphone of course.

Just to endorse Ollie St's informative comment above... it's hard to get into the mindset that switches are dead but they really are. Sensors are the answer. I got the sensor in the Prime Day sale, so it was half price. Have it on the landing so anyone going for a tiddle in the night gets a nicely dimmed light to guide them. On evenings anyone coming upstairs, they get the full blast. It turns off after 3 minutes but I think it can be even less.

Away from home I use the 'Make House Look Occupied' routine, which turns lights on and off randomly round the house until midnight.

Is the hub for this the same as the hub for the E27 kit? (Basically the most upto date hub?)
ashman33
23 Aug 17 #33
I have the sensor and If I chill out in the living room the lights go off and I just raise my leg to turn the light on! The sensor is on a shelf which I suspect is the problem.

One thing I wasn't sure how to correct is on the safety feature turning the light on and off at the switch forces the light to full brightness for maybe 1-2 minutes before a dimmer scheme with the sensor kicks back in. Maybe I need the dimmer switch as well?
shakerstevens to ashman33
23 Aug 17 #40
I don't think that can be corrected, as you say its a safety feature, so someone in your house who isn't familiar with hue can quickly get your lights on at full brightness if needs be (in an emergancy etc) by using the normal wall switch.

The IKEA Tradfri only have three steps for white - a white-ish, a warmer white and then a orangy white - they are not variable through the white spectrum like the Hue bulbs are.

The saving grace is that they are much brighter.

Any idea if the Tadfri gu10's work with the hue motion detector?

Are the smart gu10's the same size as the normal gu10's?
