Very good price for great headphones . I paid £160 for them a while ago and thought that was a great deal! I have listened to couple of sennheisers and to my ears X2's are superior. Hot!

Just looking at the comparison on that Amazon page - interesting that the L2 is the only pair of headphones that has a high definition Neodymium driver.

While this is classed as hi-res, it doesn't appear reflected in the driver...

Although it's certainly got a wider frequency range.

Fantastic headphones. I got them on Prime Day for the same price and they're much better than the Audio Technica M50X I was using before. Have some heat!

I used to own the Fidelio M1 (on ear version) of these, and the bass response was much deeper. External sounds weren't as isolated as the M2, but I flipping loved that deep bass. The cover of one cushion started coming off after one year so I upgraded to M2s. Although the sound is excellent overall, I still miss the M1s. That being said, I do think the M2s are superb. I chose them over the twice as expensive Bose QC25's - the noise cancelling made me feel unbalanced/nauseous after an hour of listening.

Any sound pros on here?

Would i need a sound card in my PC to get the most out of these or is onboard sound good enough these days?
Seanspeed to seanmorris100
25 Aug 17 #14
These are only 32 Ohms, so very easy to drive. Onboard audio will likely be ok if you've got a half decent motherboard.

But you will still likely be somewhat volume-limited there, so it depends on how loud you like to go. At moderate volumes, onboard is more than fine. If you want to push higher, you'll still probably want a bit of amplification. But you dont need it to get the proper sound from them like higher ohm headphones.
Robohasi to seanmorris100
25 Aug 17 #15
I have these and use them with my laptop, phone, PS4 controller, etc. all the time and they give great sound and enough volume, you don't need any extra equipment to drive them. Highly recommended

25 Aug 17 #19
I bought these about a year ago and think I paid more than this from warehouse deals. Really happy with them, with or without a dac. I use them with a headset cable too with the ps4 and they do a fantastic job at that too.
feiufhe97f8
25 Aug 17 #21
@rev6 I understand that open choices are quite possibly better, but my use case would be the office, so I'd have to settle with closed :disappointed: - still looking for a solution which has great sound for <£150 ideally too. Bought some MX50s for a relative last xmas for £90 - and they've been nowhere near that price since unfortunately!
rev6 to feiufhe97f8
25 Aug 17 #22
No that's not what I meant. Choices lack in the closed space around £200.

DT 770 Pro 80 Ohm perhaps? 250 Ohm if you have decent gear.
feiufhe97f8 to rev6
25 Aug 17 #23
Thanks - I looked at those last week, look to be very highly rated. Not sure if current Amazon price of £125 is decent. Looks like (CCC) they've been cheaper this year, though not <100 for a couple of years.
Seanspeed to feiufhe97f8
25 Aug 17 #26
You can still find another pair of ATH-M50X's(I'm guessing what you meant?) for less than £150 very easily.

Those would definitely be my recommended choice for closed back in that price range. Comfortable, plus a very warm and balanced sound signature that's good for just about anything except for super precise monitoring. Plus, like these Fidelio X2's, they are low ohm(38), which means you dont necessarily need extra hardware to power them properly.
TommyNooka to feiufhe97f8
25 Aug 17 #29
I've bought loads of sub £150 headphones and the best by far were the Audio Technica ATH-ES700, although they cost nearer to £180 when I got them.
I currently have the Philips Fidelio M1MKII and they're also very good headphones so tempted by these for home use as they seem a bit large for on the go.

M50x is so over-hyped and currently equally over priced headphone.
I agree there aren't any really good closed back good value offerings in this price range.
Seanspeed to basergorkobal
25 Aug 17 #28
I swear there's a circle jerk going around hating on the M50X's simply because they've become so popular. Heard people saying they are overpriced like Beats or Bose or whatever. Nah. They are popular for a reason. It's not hype, it's not marketing, it's because they're super solid headphones that beat pretty much anything in the price range and even beats many higher priced sets. Something being popular doesn't mean it is overhyped.

If you dont think the value is there, well....I'd say you'd be hard pressed to argue the value of any £100+ headphone. Diminishing returns on value are just unavoidable once you get into the high quality audio sector.
basergorkobal to Seanspeed
25 Aug 17 #32
And have you owned them and compared them to many other headphones?
Over-hyped is exactly what they are. They are popular because people think they are. Like most celebrities.
Most people don't have a clue. If this is the first decent pair of headphones they buy they'll be praising them.

25 Aug 17 #37
I'm not referring to x2 but m50x.
I also own a pair of x1 and couldn't be happier with them. Only downside compared to hd650 is the weight.
Seanspeed to basergorkobal
25 Aug 17 #36
I haven't owned them, but have used them on a number of occasions. They really are quite good. I have a proper 'overhyped' closed back headphone in the Bose AE2(got them for free a while back) and the M50X's absolutely smash them. If I wasn't such a big disciple of open-backed headphones, I'd order some M50X's in a heartbeat.

You really sound like some generic cynic here who thinks that something being popular means it's obviously overhyped. Your 'celebrity' analogy is another strong tell of that.

Well - I've noticed the X2's only get 4.5 out of 5 on Amazon and the HD598 SRs get 4.7 out of of 5... Hardly any negative reviews at all for the Sennheissers. The Philips however have plenty of negative reviews including a lot of verified reviews giving it 1 out 5 lol.

I've also seen many people online saying the HD598 SRs sound better than the HD600 and HD650s.

I'm seriously tempted to just buy both and test them out myself as everyone seems to be saying different things.

UPDATE: Just saw THIS review on youtube - doesn't fill me with confidence regarding the X2's

Another crap review of the X2's HERE. Also people online saying they had the X2s, were really disappointed, returned them and went back to their HD598s which sounded much better. I'm not convinced at all that the X2s are better than the Sennheissers.
rev6 to Master_Yoda
28 Aug 17 #51
Philips had quite a lot of QC issues. That's all. Glued pads, audio inbalance, etc. That was a while ago. It should be sorted now. And the 598's have much less reviews also.

"Better" is subjective. The HD600 are quite flat, don't have much bass. Accurate. The HD650's are warmer, with more bass. I know I said the X2's are in the same level as the HD600/650's, meaning that's where they stand on the scale of things. Audio preference is an entirely different kettle of fish.
rev6 to Master_Yoda
28 Aug 17 #52
This review says the absolute opposite. It just shows. The X2's have massive soundstage. And they're not sibilant to me. And I know sibilant. I have the 668b's

Master_Yoda
28 Aug 17 #46
Which of these headphones is better and which of these deals are better? Sennheisser HD598 SR for £79.99 OR Philips X2 £129.99??

I had already ordered the HD598s before seeing this deal but they still haven't been dispatched yet. I rate Sennheisser MUCH higher than Philips - I've owned cheaper Sennheissers and Philips headphones before and was shocked at the dire sound of the Philips headphones I bought. I've no experience of these X2s though.

I recieved mine on Friday, and have listened a fair amount...I just can't escape the feeling they have channel imbalance, simply put the left channel seems fuller and bassier. Voices also seem to be off center.

I've put in a replacement request with Amazon, and will compare the two, hopefully the second pair is better.

I also seem to have a little of the metallic band peeling issue mentioned by others;

I'm confused about something - all the reviews I saw online said these headphones were made of metal and not plastic. I received mine and the main part of the earcups are quite clearly made of plastic(??) :unamused:

Is this meant to be metal? Just to clarify I'm talking about the entire curved part running from the edge of the metal mesh to the ear pads.

Mine arrived from Italy yesterday, it's a combination of metal and plastic. Mine doesn't have any build or sound imbalance issues. Fantastic headphones for the price. The writing on the sides of the frame is metal on mine.

Well - I've been putting these headphones through their paces and am trying my best to love them, but am very disappointed with one aspect of them. Everything is mostly great until you reach the high end. When there is a lot going on at the high end, these sound horrendous and worse than cheap nasty headphones on a lot of tracks. The sibilance when it's there is unbearable - I've never heard anything like it on any headphones. It seems to come out of nowhere.

These headphones have excellent soundstage, clarity and seperation - there is no muddiness at all. The bass is surprisingly lacking IMO - thought it would be the complete opposite. The sibilance on these headphones though is HORRIFIC - shockingly bad to the point where it sounds faulty. Looked online and found lots of people complaining about exactly the same thing - appears to be considered normal for these headphones.

The sibilance was considerably worse straight out of the box - after the first hour of burning-in this reduced massively but there has been no change ever since. The X2's have slightly more bass and punch than the 598's but there is hardly anything in it - they sound almost identical - the X2's sibilance problem make a lot of tracks totally unbearable. When you don't hear any sibilance they sound absolutely fantastic which is actually pretty annoying. The build quality and physical feel/weight is in a different league on the X2s. The 598s are alot more comfortable but look and feel extremely cheap and toy like in your hands when next to the X2s. My X2s seem to put far too much pressure on the side of the head - I had to take them off several times due to actual pain - never had that happen before with any headphones. Mine seriously made me think of GOT when The Mountain crushes that guy's skull - I'll assume this eases with use lol.

I love things like the cable but I also have the silver band peeling issue - looks shocking in places and as if it's been stuck on by a child. My biggest concern though is the sound, especially at this price. Some things sound amazing on them - but a lot of things sound absolutely horrendous and I certainly wasn't expecting that.

What headphones are you using the compare them to other than the 598's? And what are you using to drive them? I'd like to know what you're listening to so I can try hear what you're talking about.
If coming from closed type I can see the bass being underwhelming. But I find them good there, for open. A lot of headphones suffer with sibilance even the £350 HIFIMan 400i's.

The clamping force will loosen over time. Put them over something like a box to quicken the process. They hurt the top of my right ear for a while but it went away eventually.

I have tried all genres and noticed the same problem. Try 'James Arthur - You're Nobody 'til Somebody Loves You' and crank up the volume - I just listened to this track and it literally gave my X2's a sibilant mental breakdown. Also - all my music is FLAC and not MP3 or anything like that.

Plenty of others online saying the same thing:

That song is very bright. It's very sibilant. It makes my not-sibilant AKG K240's painful. In fact I cycled through all my headphones and they all sound bright, harsh and painful. The closed pairs, generally more muffled sound, you could say warmer I guess, aren't as harsh but probably because the one's I have aren't very good and the mid/high end is generally weak. Still sibilant though. The Superlux 668B's I have are un-listenable with that song. Wow.

I guess you buy headphones based on the genre/style of music you listen to. In this case I don't know what to suggest. Maybe closed are generally less sibilant or neutered by low-end? You could EQ out some of the sibilance.

Do you have other music I can try?

Currently listening to 'Labrinth - Treatment' - Sibilance is bad on that track with the X2's. It get's shockingly bad from 3:27 onwards :astonished: . The sound reminds me of the free headsets you get on planes with the volume maxed out - probably worse. I don't believe Labrinth's stuff is badly recorded.

'Labrinth - Let the Sunshine' also sounds like crap on these headphones... wow - tons of sibilance again - the trebles are seriously atrocious - sounds like a cheap nasty pair of headphones being maxed out. The X2's can't handle anything going on in the high end. That track sounds great on all of my other headphones. Currently listening to the same track on my CALs just to confirm this isn't being imagined and I can confirm it sounds perfect on my CALs - no sibilance at all during the entire song. The XB950B1's also have no sibilance on the same track.
rev6 to Master_Yoda
12 Sep 17 #68
I gave Treatment a go. Pretty loud. It was bright but I didn't find it bright enough to be sibilant. Let the Sunshine again bright like most pop music nowadays, but not to the point of being over bright. I'm not saying you're imagining it as we all perceive sound differently. I think you'll get used to it over time, or they will run-in and tame a bit. I did find You're Nobody 'til Somebody Loves You very sibilant on all my headphones.

Check out the measurements of both headphones. You might be able to figure out what you don't like about the X2's and adjust them to your liking since you said you like them apart from the sibilance.
