Was looking at the Currys sale to see if there were any good deals on the Rift/Vive

Provided you have one of the eligible items that work with Discount code "ACC20" - It applies the discount to the entire order

For example, I went for the cheapest I could find
currys.co.uk/gbu…tml

Also works for the HTC Vive - £484.74

Which did you like more? Vive or Rift?
Fo3 to AadilF1
27 Aug 17 #16
The Vive is far superior in my opinion, the field of view looks bigger, tracking is on a different level, and there is a better selection of games. Also since they're on steam you can return them if you don't like them, not sure Rift has the same option. I had a rift too recently, but the tracking kept wobbling, tried two trackers and the same issue. I'll be trying again with three this time but I still doubt it can match the Vive.
ned_ryerson to Fo3
27 Aug 17 #19
Rift tracking is great, no problems here at all. It also has less screen door effect than the Vive. AND you can play Steam games with it, so the selection of games is the same. It's more comfortable, has built in headphones, and Oculus is funding lots of big exclusives, so it's only going to get better.

I have a Rift and a Vive. The Rift is far superior. The setup is much simpler, the screen is better due to less of a screen door effect (where you can make out the individual pixels), it supports the same games as the Vive through SteamVR and on top of that you can play the Oculus Home exclusives. The controllers are far better, more comfortable and better hand presence. The headset itself has headphones built in and is much more comfortable to wear. For large play spaces, you will need a 3rd sensor for the Rift for perfect tracking. This is the only advantage of the Vive, it can track bigger play areas. But for most people I don't think it would be an issue.

No question, the better choice is the Rift.

27 Aug 17 #23
Good deal whichever you get. General consensus seems to be that, were they both the same price, it's still debatable but you would probably go for the Vive because of the better tracking (but that really only applies if you have a big space to move about in - 3m squared or over). However the Oculus touch controllers are better.

At this price difference though, you'd really have to love Valve\hate Facebook to go for the Vive first.

The clock speed. The currys site lists it at 1657 but I can't find any reference to an asus card running at that speed. The standard is 1607, the a8g is 1670 and the o8g is 1759, but based on the card size I think it has to be the a8g.

The o8g is just clocked higher in the factory, it shouldnt matter as you can just clock it manually, I dont think asus bin the chips so they should be the same.

Awesome deal, I went for the HTC Vive in the end even though it's more expensive. I'd recently bought a DK2 a couple of months ago for £120 and found the main short comings were lack of controls and hassle with room scaling using ps3 cameras and ps move controllers. I found that you need atleast 3 cameras each requiring a 3.0 usb connection unless I'm wrong. Atleast with the Vive the light houses just need a powersupply. I also like the chaperone system so I don't run amok one day unlike on the DK2

I can't see a profitable part of HTC business not being a desirable purchase, so even if HTC gets split up it will still do ok. Also I can't see Steam dropping support for it anytime soon :raised_hand:

As for SDE I grew up in the age of scanlines so not a massive deal for me
wild_quinine
27 Aug 17 #66
I also have a Rift and Vive and I vastly prefer the Vive. The Rift gives me motion sickness where the Vive does not. I find the Vive significantly more comfortable. I massively prefer the cabling on the Vive during Room Scale - the Rift is always bothering me like it has a mind of its own. And lastly, the tracking on the Vive is worlds better.

The Rift does do some things better, don't get me wrong. I like what they were shooting for with touch, and the ergonomics are theoretically superior. But the response from those controllers is so hit and miss compared to the Vive that it dispells the illusion straight up.

I use my Rift for seated play, and wouldn't bother with it for Room Scale. And thing is, Room Scale really is the true VR.

So Vive all the way, for me.

I've read similar in lots of review sites and is what swung it for me. I intend on setting it up at work for 'research' as have a roughly 3mx4m space and will set it up in the garden at home. Got a pretty decent size lawn (10mx20m) so roomscale should be epic, really excited! Will look a tit at night but I don't care.

The next gen of these headsets will be awesome, but I reckon with what I've paid for the Vive today I could get at least half of that back when I come to upgrade come late 2018.

Setup of the Vive is extremely simple.. I am not sure what issue you would have but all you need to do is mount the light houses and plug the headset in. Steam VR software is quite self explanatory...

If you are buying the Rift you would be supporting the exclusivity deals that Facebook keeps on making - this actually harms the VR industry and isn't viable for the long term.

VR won't take off fully with companies like Facebook making these platform specific projects.

I would choose to support the Vive on this reason alone.

Good price, but this gen is just not good enough IMO.
Games are far too low res.
Had an awesome time with Project Cars and a rift, as a novelty (and I could actually race far better than on a screen, but once you got used to the effect, you just realised more and more that things just looked poor when gaming.
Some demos look amazing, so I presume games made specifically for them look better. For me its a shame that they don't run at 4k (or close) and just use lower quality graphics - say Grid 2 still looks awesome and could play on 2 x 4k screens on todays high end. As long as people expect AAA quality graphics in VR, we are going to be a few years off a suitable setup.

So tempted, but I want to hold out for 4k version 2 headsets (2k per eye).
NyanBlade
27 Aug 17 #84
For the Rift, it's as simple as connecting the sensors via USB and then placing them wherever you want. The guided setup is super fast and easy. For the Vive, each base station needs to be plugged in and if you choose to use the included wall mounts it requires drilling into your wall and securely tightening it. Takes much longer to setup (clearing the space in the corners of the room to put a ladder there and then cleaning up) Not impossible, but for most people I can see it as a problem. The SteamVR setup process for the Vive didn't automatically install the bluetooth driver and I had to manually do it and restart a couple of times - this is essential to be able to put your base stations into sleep mode and update their firmware without having to plug them into your PC.

As for the exclusivity, it only appears to be Oculus funding the biggest and best games with the most depth. Superhot is an example of a timed exclusive, it has been available on SteamVR now and it wouldn't have existed in it's current form without the support from Oculus. Oculus have also stated they won't be actively blocking Vive users who use the Revive mod to play the exclusive games on the Vive. Without Oculus, many of the best games wouldn't exist and VR developers would stop making games as there is very little money to be made.

I don't have shares in either company and I'm not a rep for either of them, I own both headsets so my recommendation is based on real experience I have using them. As i've been experiencing VR since last May and know the differences between them both, it is extremely clear to me that the Rift is superior. To achieve a comparable level of comfort and features between the Rift and Vive you need to spend another £100 on the Deluxe Audio Strap for the Vive. The Vive does not deserve the extra price vs the Rift, the ONLY advantage is the larger tracking ability (which I don't think is an issue for most people).

The only way I would recommend a Vive is if you needed a very large play area tracked.

And something I see popping up too often is people doubting the Rift's roomscale capability. The Rift DOES support roomscale, you can achieve standing 360 tracking with the two provided sensors in opposite corners but for a larger play area you will need a 3rd sensor.

28 Aug 17 #89
The vive is great, it's a doddle to set up and the steam software is excellent, a couple of photo light stands make it even easier and portable. I find it very comfortable, you need to adjust it properly to get the most out of it though, which is the only real caveat.

The rift is ok, but it's inferior tracking and slightly lower FOV make it less worthwhile in spite of the cost reduction. And on a personal note I prefer to support the SteamVR ecosystem, facebook is entitled to do what it wants in terms of funding and exclusives, but I'm not going to support exclusivity on the PC platform with my money.

If you want more seated experiences rather than proper roomscale then just get a rift, it it's the proper roomscale VR that you are after the Vive is still out and out the best option. It's also relatively soon to get a new set of controllers and the knuckles are by all accounts vastly superior to the rifts touch controllers. That being said those new controllers are likely to appear alongside a new steamvr headset from LG which is likely to be a substantial improvement on both the Rift and Vive.
NyanBlade
28 Aug 17 #90
You're spreading misinformation here. The Vive is front heavy and without the additional Deluxe Audio Strap (+£100) there is no support to distribute the weight on your head. You may find it comfortable, but when you directly compare it and test it against a Rift, it really isn't anywhere near as comfortable for longer play sessions. It is more awkward to look down (feels less secure) and you get tired more quickly due to its weight.

The constellation tracking is not inferior in terms of tracking fidelity, only in tracking distance. The Rift's tracking solution works much better for more people as I haven't experienced problems with mirrors as I have with the Vive. Also when tracking fails, the Rift is MUCH better at reverting to its IMU and only using rotational tracking. With the Vive it sent me flying all over the place and the controllers were drifting around. This was horrible for me, and for anyone with any level of motion sickness this would trigger it pretty much instantly.

The Rift CAN do roomscale. I don't understand why people keep saying it's a seated experience? They both run the same SteamVR games.

With the Rift, you can take advantage of ASW which allows games to drop to 45fps and create synthetic frames with positional data, not only rotational data like ATW. This allows more people to play Rift games with a lower minimum spec, and those with higher end rigs can push up supersampling even further to increase visual quality.

And with the knuckles, again you have to pay extra money to achieve feature parity with the Rift.

In the current state the headsets are being sold in, it's the most obvious decision to pick the Rift based on it's value, screen quality, comfort, integrated audio, game selection and controllers.
Vistrix
28 Aug 17 #91
Sure, you have to drill holes in your walls if you want to mount them permanently but this isn't exactly a pain to do. Once they're up, they're up. Also, they don't require you to have USB cables trawled across the room like the Rift sensors do - the light houses are completely passive.

As for the bluetooth drviers, its literally a tickbox in the Steam VR settings and you might need to restart once. that is quite straight forward, surely? Once thats done, the light houses don't fail to automatically power on and off.

Funding exclusive games harms the industry in the long term. There's no question about it. The games they choose might be great but it didn't need to be exclusive. I choose not to support a company that does this.

At least they've stopped blocking Revive. They would have had a huge backlash if they did.

The Rift is a closed system too. Another advantage that the Vive has is that the components are not locked to the Steam headset, meaning you can use the light houses or controllers for future headsets if developers would like to use them.
NyanBlade
28 Aug 17 #92
I'm looking at this from the perspective of a consumer. And my recommendation is what I think is the best choice for someone looking to buy a VR headset today. The Rift setup is simpler without a doubt. It natively supports more games and has more AAA games available to play. It's more comfortable and you can use it for longer without getting tired. It also supports room scale and steam VR games so no issues there. For larger places £59 is reasonable. The integrated audio really does make a world of difference in comfort and ease of use.

And as I said previously the only reason I could recommend a Vive to a normal consumer is if they have a larger place space than the constellation system can support.

Other than that, based on everything I've said there's no question the Rift is better for someone looking to get into VR today.
Vistrix
28 Aug 17 #93
The Rift being better for a newcomer to VR is of course questionable.

Of course the Rift supports Steam games because theres no exclusive deals going on!

Integrated audio is useless if you want to use your expensive headphones with your headset and the comfort levels? I play for a maximum of 2 hours in VR and it is extremely comfortable. It can get a bit hot in summer but the Rift has the same problem.

You can endlessly list pros and cons for both systems but the real issue for me is the shady deals that Facebook are doing.

Each person just has to research them and weigh the points.
NyanBlade
28 Aug 17 #94
Say what you want about those deals but without the funding those games wouldn't exist. Without Facebook's support the VR industry would die as there is no money in it for VR devs. They are a business, they want their store to succeed and they want VR to succeed. I find it silly that people would want to pay extra for the Vive solely because of this.

EDIT: Would like to mention that HTC are known for their terrible customer support. Check r/Vive and you will see countless posts about this. With Oculus you can have a replacement headset within a week. If you chose to side with the Vive, your customer support is coming from a failing business that is bleeding money. There's a common issue with the Vive trackpads where they break.
Vistrix
28 Aug 17 #95
Facebook is harming the industry if they keep doing exclusive deals. Exclusives are never good for the consumer.

Why would it be silly to not to support a company that does this? It's common sense really.

But I understand if other reasons like price or comfort outweigh this point.
NyanBlade
28 Aug 17 #96
I understand you're point too. I would prefer if there were no exclusives at all but the current VR market requires devs to have external investment as sales are not high enough to convince devs to take the risk with VR development. These are investments for Facebook so obviously they want to see some kind of return on them, I really don't think have timed exclusives is unfair in exchange for great content that otherwise wouldn't exist. I don't see Valve putting this much into ensuring VR is a success.

rubbish, (own both)

Rift best for seated.
Vive for room scale.

Vive is lighter, better colours and larger FOV.

Seems to be loads of problems with the new batch of rifts with 'mura' (noisy blacks) problems.

Once you go past two sensors on the rift then get into all sort of USB bandwidth issues. You will end up having to buy an adaptor card to fix this which means opening the PC up and that is not for everyone. Also you will have cables running all over the shop to the back of you PC.

see I can spin it too. :kissing_heart:

What would the minimum PC specs be for a Rift?

It's the graphic card that matters. So a 970 or 1070. But ideally you want a 980 ti or 1080. To run VR games. higher frame rates reduce motion sickness.

I think your points are generally fair enough, and as has been said, there are pros and cons to both, but the point is that people keep spreading misinformation about the Rift, whereas they don't about the Vive.

"The Rift is only for seated experiences" WRONG
"The Rift can't do standing 360 and has bad tracking" WRONG, it had tracking problems a year ago but is now flawless after several updates to the software
"The Rift can't do roomscale" WRONG reddit.com/r/o…ale
"Vive uses the Steam ecosystem so has more games than Rift" WRONG, Rift can use Steam too (my most played games are Steam games so far). Vive can also use Oculus games using the Re-Vive software.
"Vive is equally or more comfortable" There is an element of personal taste to this, but generally WRONG. If the Vive was perfectly comfortable and functional as it is, why are they bringing out a new £100 deluxe strap?

Yes, to do large area tracking as well as the Vive you'll likely need the extra USB pci-e card to give you more USB ports, which requires opening up the PC, but I think it's a fair assumption that anyone with a decent spec gaming PC, a huge open space, and a desire to buy bleeding edge tech like VR, is sufficiently experienced with computers to do something as simple as plug in a pci-e card, which is akin to putting a piece of bread in the toaster. Or, at the least, someone in their household has those abilities. It's not a huge negative for the Rift.

People are free to pick whichever system they think is better, but it needs to be based on current facts, not deliberate or old misinformation

28 Aug 17 #122
I'm not, if you adjust the vive straps properly it's supported properly by the back of your head, most people, especially if they are quickly trying it never bother to properly adjust the straps.

The vive almost NEVER loses tracking, if you have your space set up right you should nearly never lose tracking. The only time I've had it loose tracking is where the environment is very noisy(masses of reflective surfaces on a sunny day) or I've just not set it up right(sensors too low) so it got occluded. If you are going to be losing tracking it's obvious when you set it up. The rift CAN do roomscale, it's just nowhere near is good, to claim the same capability on rift is misinformation on your part.

Steam has it's own version of ASW, has for a while although it doesn't let you go down to 45, although as both Oculus and Valve pointed out there is a reason why 90fps was the target, even with asw you are in potential vomit comet land particularly in roomscale.

Knuckles don't add parity, they are by all accounts a significant improvement. They also highlight a different point as they are made by a DIFFERENT company than the headset, SteamVR is open anyone can make software OR hardware for it and they are inter operable within reason(lighthouse 2.0 tracks more objects than 1.0, but all 2.0 hardware does work with 1.0 lightouses)

As to the rest:
Screen quality is actually the same it's the optics that differ, and there is a clear tradeoff situation on that front it is far from a 1:1 comparison.

Comfort, totally subjective, since the release of the DAS for Vive, which by all accounts is supposed to be BETTER than the rifts headstrap system many users report they actually found the old system as comfortable or more so. The biggest lesson here, it's all about adjustment, you quickly find the people that simply never adjusted their vives.

Integrated audio is a negative for me, the bundled earphones are fine and are a doddle to attach to the vive and don't get in the way. If I want good audio well I want to use my 300 quid AKGs thanks not whatever crappy audio you can squeeze into the price of a peripheral that costs the same price.

As you say the games are 90% the same, but if like me you support an open PC platform then that's a definite tick towards SteamVR's native headsets. Screw companies having closed platforms on PC, we hammer MS and other companies every time they try it, facebook isn't getting away with it.

Controllers, the touch controllers are nice, but the Vive wands are actually still very good, especially given they came out a lot earlier. They track better and in games where most of the time you are gripping a handle in a game they are actually very good and representative. If you are holding a gun or a sword or a bow as you are in most VR games the vive wands IMO are better. But it's a toss up.

There is a difference between my post and yours. I'm sharing my opinion, I'm not pretending it's facts, you want everyone to believe your opinions are facts. They aren't.

I was stupid enough to select Standard delivery over the Free next-day delivery (ffs, they have both for free?) and I am biting my nails cause the order might be cancelled by then. Got my vive at 5pm. Drilled the lighthouses to the walls and setup the software. Really annoying setup which is massively over complicated. Had to take the lighthouses back down to firmware update them. Kept disconnecting when set to a-b so ended up setting to b-c and it's 100% stable. It's not bad but installation is a pain the 1st time.
eau_rouge
29 Aug 17 #180
If you read the instructions, it's meant to be set to b-c and not a-b.

I set mine up at first as a test before attaching to the wall, which I was glad I did when I realised I needed to do the update with the cable. Install the Bluetooth driver and you can do updates that way in the future and save taking them down.

I just double checked and whilst I read it I think using the software I must of skipped that bit somehow

What I just found out

A) is wired slave/client.
B) is wireless master/host.
C) is wireless slave.

A) connected to PC
A-B) Connected by 3.5mm jack
B-C) Normal wireless setup

Just think it would be easier to show a diagram of these three setups

Thanks for the info on the bluetooth drivers , I despair a bit on whoever did these manuals :disappointed:

30 Aug 17 #184
How much space do you have for roomscale, i am working with 9 feet by 9 feet which is classed as moderate room scale, and with two sensors for 360 tarcking it works perfectly, if you got more then i can see a 3rd sensor being required but if not you should try 360 with two.

I have them either side of the room up high on the wall and they work great, no issues.
TheDodger
30 Aug 17 #185
I have 6ft by 12ft but its in a slight L shape because of my desk. I'll try moving the other sensor to get a better angle. because its not able to track the entire room. I'm just hesitant because it took me 30 minutes to get them in the correct position. Thanks

30 Aug 17 #187
I have the very same issue, my PC desk causes me to lose about 2 extra feet to the left of me, but, the sensor is directly above that lost area so it won't see it anyway.....i will show you my room setup.....it's crude but you get the general layout of the sensors, i stand in the middle of the empty area and face sensor 1X wall, with that sensor to the top right of me and the other on level with the side of me to the left.....and that seems to work perfectly.

1X = Sensor 1
2X= Sensor 2

Edit: Got my dispatch e-mail as well! But the tracking codes are beyond weird, they cannot be meant for me as they both show already delivered orders for 2 different people on Sun 04 Dec 2016... Let's hope the tracking is an old one and it hasn't updated yet for my order.
jaydeeuk1
30 Aug 17 #201
mine arrived other day but finally set it up properly today after faffng with firmware updates, and trying to do the setup.not easy when you have a large play area and the monitor with instructions on is other side of the room!

Anyway. I can only compare this to the psvr we haven't work, bearing in mind I'm running a 1050ti so the very minimum spec, but it's amazing. Roomscale, resolution, accuracy (I used the sync cable, it's there for a reason!) And it's several orders of magnitude better than the psvr. Sure the gun in farpoint is great, but the Vive controllers are a huge improvement on the move stick things.

Got star trek downloaded (on offer) and will try tomorrow. I had read comments about screen door effect, uncomfy headset compared to ps vr and cables in the way. I was so immersed that sde wasn't noticeable, and even when I looked for it it didn't bother me at all. I had also adjusted the straps on the headset, and being a glasses wearer I found it comfier and better at blocking light out that the psvr.

The cable was one negative, with pc at one corner of the rectangle the cable was only long enough to reach 3/4 the way in my play area, I definitely need a 3 or 4 metre extension or even better a wireless solution.

I'm going to get in to work early tomorrow just to pay it, not done that in 10 years haha

Just got mine along with a bunch of other bits I bought with 20% off the lot. What was a nice surprise is I grabbed the PNY GTX 1070 which Curry's list for £380. The pics showed this to be the XLR8 OC version even though the spec/price suggested it was the standard but sure enough, it's the OC version as shown in the pic (£540 on amazon). Even at the retail £380 this isn't a bad buy but at £300 it's a "thank you very very much Curry's and huge thanks to the OP"
