Is protein the latest trend or something. Why am I seeing a lot of food products lately pushing protein? Even Primark are in on the game with Protein bars.

Because people don't understand that all they need to eat are nuts, beans or pulses and are obsessed with whey protein.

If by 'latest' you mean the increasing demand in the last 10-15 years for "high protein" products (such as powders, bars, gels, drinks, & tablets) to promote muscle (mass) growth/recovery, then yes.
However, a high protein diet is not a new discovery related to how the human body uses nutrients (such as protein & amino acids) for repair/maintenance.
Although (amateur/professional) "bodybuilders" have typically favoured high protein diets to benefit their training, the
exercise/training session/gym activities in the increasing health-conscious public
has probably led to food manufacturers increasing supply of products
that address the needs of consumers "on-the-go" (that do not have time to stop for a meal, but prefer to take snacks) through targeted marketing/advertising.
Also, the changing attitudes towards the production/consumption of meat &/or animal-derived foods, may be adding to the demand of alternative sources of protein.
Some background reading (most recently published first), if you are interested...

I just find it very odd that people want to kill and eat insects when plants are sufficient and readily available!

lol protein porridge . Full of sugars and poor quality oats and then microwaved. Ok for lazy fatties but as there aiming this at health people all these things negate there purpose. Just another joke gimmick with false advertising.
