Do you reckon there is a chance you will be able to buy it for this price when Mario comes out?

29 Aug 17#15
Meh, still £60 too much considering the hardware specification IMHO. Of course Nintendo fans don't consider the specification at all hence why it's doing so well that and artificial stock shortages.
I'm sure it will have great first party exclusive games and all like every Nintendo console ever does but I still think it costs too much for the performance offers, plus the price premium of the games really takes the pee. Sadly Nintendo is the Apple of gaming where everything they release is adored and snapped up at any price whether its worthy of that adoration or not....
johnthehuman to ST3123
29 Aug 17#17
What hardware specification are you talking about?
GPU power? CPU cores? Memory?
All irrelevant, when you consider how fun and accessible the games are.

He has a point, there is generally a widely recognised 'Nintendo Tax' where everything they sell inlcuding games for example costing £10 more than usual. End of the day it's supply vs demand, if people buy it and enjoy it Nintendo are gonna charge the most they can get for it. Considering they pretty much have a monopoly on handheld now they can pretty much do what they want. Some competition would be healthy but with Sony pretty much giving in on handheld gaming I think the swtich is the only way to go really.

Totally agree. It's effectively in line with a two year old tablet - the hardware doesn't justify the price tag.
Edit: And that's ignoring how astonishingly overpriced the accessories are!

begrudgingly i voted hot as this is a "deal" for a switch, but I couldn't agree more ! I like the concept of the switch, but it currently costs a lot more than a PS4 or a XBOX and is limited to its overpriced recycled first party titles ( a bid some good ones in the mix ). I feel for game diversity / choice PS4, XBOX or PC is the way to go.

Appears this is epxired now? Can't see Amazon under sellers and cheapeat other price is £329
johnthehuman
29 Aug 17#21
They're not really charging that much to be honest.
It's got better tech inside than an nVidia shield, which costs £180. Plus you get two motion controllers (which cost >£60 on their own) and a dock.
The PS3 cost nearly £500 when it came out, and had significantly less tech than the Switch.
New Mario is up for around £42 at the moment, same as, if not cheaper than, new CoD, Destiny etc. Nintendo products hold their value well, which some people mistake for meaning they're expensive.
petermcgregor14 to johnthehuman
29 Aug 17#22
A car that costs £50,000 is still an expensive car when compared to one that costs £15,000 regardless of whether or not it holds its value or not. The rest of your comment I don't disagree with and there are some good games for the switch.
johnthehuman to petermcgregor14
29 Aug 17#25
What I mean is, you'll see most PS4 games for £20 a few weeks after launch, whereas Mario will still be £40 next year - so Nintendo 'seems' expensive to most people - "oh that old game is still £40, wth Nintendo what a rip!"
diazepam to johnthehuman
29 Aug 17#23
PS3 was pretty darn powerful when it was released - which was over 10 years ago! I don't think the Switch is that badly priced, but what a bizarre comparison.
johnthehuman to diazepam
29 Aug 17#24
It cost £500
How is it bizarre? It's a console, which cost £500 at launch. The tech wasn't mind-blowing, and was pretty odd architecture which was difficult to code for.
The Switch is £280 at launch, and is both a full home console and a full portable handheld console. Not sure why anyone would think it's expensive.
thelagmonster to johnthehuman
29 Aug 17#26
Because it's barely better than a K1, but £100 more. The fact that you're comparing the Switch to a 2006 console speaks volumes about how overpriced the hardware is in 2017.
daBluone to thelagmonster
29 Aug 17#28
Such a pointless comparison, can you play new nintendo games on the K1? Does the nintendo switch sell out as soon as stock arrives? The market has spoken. Also it's not cheap to develop and market a new product so Nintendo have priced this well for the business model their chasing.
thelagmonster to daBluone
29 Aug 17#29
It's out of stock because Nintendo are deliberately restricting supply to avoid a Wii U scenario. It's hardly a pointless comparison, the Switch is absolutely a glorified tablet, it uses a tablet chipset.
There's no debating the quality of Nintendo's software, but their approach to hardware is extremely disappointing in my opinion. £60 for a controller? £90 for a replacement dock? Shows what they think of their customers!

And Sony lost money making the Ps3 back then because of the blu ray drive

29 Aug 17#27
£280 for the Switch is not a high price. Comparing it to a tablet is a wrong comparison. A standard tablet or even none standard one just plays run of the mill mobile games which are mostly free and or crap. Even the ones you pay for can not compare to most console games. This is both a home console and a portbale gaming machine which can not be said for any its competitors. PS4 when it came out was £400 this is coming in at £120 less.

petermcgregor14
29 Aug 17#32
Agree I'm half tempted. But game library at present is pretty poor. Also the social software is terrible still using friend codes etc. There is also a lack of an Internet browser and why don't they incorporate some ability to play video streaming services like Netflix or be able to play and record your own videos would be nice. This would at least give the tablet some use until more releases come out.

There's plenty of articles to be found online regarding Nintendo Switch supply chain issues, with the global shortage of batteries and flash memory causing the most headaches. Nintendo had only planned to sell 10m units which would have been agreed with their supply chain. It's likely (if they can get the parts) they are going to sell 18m units in the first year. So they're hardly restricting supply.

Cracking price for a great bit of kit. I've already wasted 500+ hours on mine so worth every penny.
The portability and how quick it takes to jump into a game (literally seconds) make it such a godsend when you have a few minutes to kill.
Dunno why people keep going on about game shortage, loads of decent games on the eshop now.

I'm a little put off by Amazon's automatic enrolment to "NMPR and Check-Mend".
Am I correct in thinking it may make it difficult for me to sell/trade it on when the time comes, like at CeX? Would I need to get it deregistered first, so they can sell it onwards again?
Interested if anyone has any experience on this. Ta!

No that won't affefct anything, if you report it as stolen or lsot and it gets sold to cexs or found in a police raid of a residence they'll be able to get it back to you since they'll know from the serial number its yours. Ntop sure if CeX etc delist you as the owner if you sell to them.
