For those folks planning to buy and unlock the phone, a word of caution. I have had a couple of phones on pay as you go on O2 recently, both of which have had to be returned as I couldn't get them unlocked anywhere, and I tried unlockers all over the world / net / high street. The phones were simply too new and the unlockers didn't have the codes for the IMEI numbers. O2 won't unlock the phone unless you have owned / used it for year, and you stump up £20. So be prepared to have to return the phone at your own cost, under the 14 day cooling off period, it worked okay for me on both occasions, but you do have to chase O2 to get your refund. Good luck, hope it works out better for everyone than my own experience. As always YMMV.

I really like Moto phones, great value... BUT most of them don't appear to have a compass / magnetometer (to display direction when you're on google maps). I appreciate that many won't care about that, but I do. Can anyne tell me a model of Moto phone that DOES have a built in compass?

Great phone for the price. Biggest letdown for me is the lack of compass. It's useless for things like in car navigation.

It's not completely useless. As the GPS software will detect your orientation depending on your movements. Not ideal though.

The initial 16gb is a ballache with the operating system taking up 6gb of that straight away. But, if you put in a formatted SD card, you can set it to be added to primary storage. I've not used that feature yet, but it's something only a few manufactures have added. It just means the card won't work in anything but the phone. As for the camera, I'm really impressed. Very good in Low light levels. The only real thing that the Moto has better is camera stabilisation for video recording.

Bought this phone when it first came out on this offer and have now ran out of space - do you know if formatting the sd as internal slows it down and messes up some apps at all as presume sd card is slower than internal?

Under £2 to unlock, but not sure I'd recommend this phone, seriously going off Moto series phones. X Play - back under warranty; Moto G4 Plus - currently going back under warranty for ghost touch; G5 Plus - camera image problems; wifes G5 cracked non-Gorilla screen within a fortnight of buying. Having been quite loyal to Moto, I think they may have stretched my loyalty too far :thinking:

Moto X 2nd gen going strong since Jan 2016. Dropped plenty times too. Very slow on updates though not moving from android 6.0

Tis a shame for sure, it's a far cry from the original Moto G that was £100 from Tesco and well built and well supported. Since Lenovo took over they've not carried on the good work Google/Moto started but sadly Lenovo are only interested in selling new phones as they make no money from issuing updates. Let's not even go down the compass ommision!

4 motos in the home with no issues. Mine X force for over a year no issues, Mrs G4 play for six months no problems, two boys have G4 and G5 no problems. All except the X force were bought second hand.

I had the Moto G and the G2 with no problems, but it does look like quality control is going downhill.
Has had no support from day one, no updates, no security patches, nothing, they were just assuming.

Just bought the G5, it's amazing value for money. Traded my G4 I to cex for £95. It lost £40 in value over almost 12 months. A new mid range phone every 12 month with a dirt cheap sim only deal is the way to go.

How much better is the G5 than the G4? A year later and I'm looking to get rid of my G4. Didn't stand the test of time at all and I really thought I could get over the awful camera (I own an expensive dslr) but a phone with a good camera is a must now, I think. Tempted to just splurge on the high spec Oneplus 5.

The G5 is no better than the G4, other than the inclusion of a fingerprint sensor.
In fact, many things have been downgraded. The screen is smaller (not really a bad thing), but it's also dimmer and less colourful than the G4. Also, there is no Gorilla glass protection for the screen, so it's scratches and cracks easily, and the processor is slightly slower. The camera is basically exactly the same as the G4, with no improvements to image quality.
If you aren't happy with the G4, you are likely to be less happy with the G5 (unless your G4 has the well known ghost touch issue, which doesn't affect the G5).

Top up is not compulsory when buying from O2. You only pay £129 regardless of the selected tariff.
An unlock code is less than £2 on eBay.

If you buy on their site, you are selecting a tariff, not a SIM with credit already on it. It's an empty SIM until you put credit on it yourself.

just purchased a G4 - lots of reviews state the G5 drops wifi alot. and camera is a backwards step. You do get the finger print access and fingerprint swipe app and metal case.

It's not even a metal case. The it's just a piece of metal stuck to the battery cover. The rest of the phone is all plastic.

As for the people recommending the Huawei P8, I hope they have got better at issuing updates. I have never, in the 4 years I have owned my phone, had an update from Huawei for my P1. It put me off buying any of their phones again.

A software unlock code is all that's required and can't invalidate the warranty.... suppliers may make that threat/excuse but it's not the same as unlocking the boot loader which will invalidate the warranty as a big bootup screen says so.
