Wondering if anyone has had any issues with cashback?

I ordered on the 30th of August and after writing to them recently, I got an email from the advisors saying "your product was purchased outside of the promotional period and you do not qualify for this offer"

Just as well i took screenshots so i've sent it back to them calling them out on their BS.

Ordered this deal on Sunday online , got an order number and a online receipt and no delivery info .
Rang PC world / Currys logistics side of the company and was greeted with 20 mins of inane music and a robotic voice saying " we are busy at the moment " I hung up !
Today I reviewed my order and wondered when my purchase would arrive , still no email so I phoned them again , yes more runaround on the phone at my expense , twenty mins later an operative says I can't see your order I am going to have to speak with a colleague, on hold again .... 15 mins later he says " hello I'm sorry we have sold out of the product but we can give you a refund " !!!
I announce I can't believe the company's incompetence and angrily say I will not be using Currys again .....
Then I jump in the car on the off chance I may find one in our local store - queue for 20 mins , explain the sheer incompetence to a member of staff who checks the stock - no , I am sorry none in stock anywhere , can I get you a refund ?
she then phones the number only to be put on hold to that stupid music again , I ask when do I get my £1'299 money back ? In about 5 days I am told !!!!!
So congratulation Currys / PC world you are now at the top of my list of terrible unethical business practices I have yet to come across, and I can't even go and get. Replacement somewhere else until my money is paid back ! Buyer beware

Worth logging on and checking the perks website as mine is now offering instant vouchers that you can use online (it used to be the cards only). The silver one is still available, just picked it up with the 8% discount that way

Same as me. Ours is via Corp Perks and they quote 2 - 3 days.

I thought about this last week but expected the MBP to sell out over the weekend so bottled it as I don't think it's easy to get the money back off them.

Unfortunately yes. But they usually do it in a day if requested on a week day.

The sale ends on Tuesday though and the space grey is now sold out

Heat I might get this tomorrow as I get an extra 8% off at Currys via using gift cards. Seen a few videos on youtube and the Touchbar is actually a really good handy feature. Maybe the people who are saying its a waste of time haven't actually seen its potential yet? I was in that boat before I checked out the video reviews.

I just love it when the touch bar is filled with emojis  its so cool

3 Sep 17 #164
Mines also 7% off but theres also the option for x8 WOW points which works out to be 8% off.
There is no instant e-code version available yet...
I've noticed that the card DOES work online even though it says it doesn't on their website.
I ordered the card last week with just a £5 in to test it. At checkout I typed in the card details and it deducted £5.

Not sure if its a simple process to get a refund if you end up not buying though.

Shame its sold out though now. At least i've saved myself from spending any money lol Maybe wait for the 2017 models to be discounted now or if another retailer discounts the 2016 models at the same rate.

I would politely suggest you go back through the thread and have a read of what his original post was in response to (someone suggesting he could get an Asus instead for £700). I think you'll find in that context his point is perfectly reasonable, not facetious or nit picking as you appear to be suggesting. The subsequent arguments you've given aren't relevant when you consider the sub thread of your conversation from that first post by the other user.

Moreover, the facts he is stating are sound and form valid reasoning for choosing a Mac for anyone that wants to use OSX or has a usage case where a Mac is the only choice. There is no legitimate (or even hassle free alternative) for running OSX on other hardware. Whereas there is a legitimate and relatively hassle free alternative for those of us that use Mac's but need Windows compatibility (boot camp or virtualisation). (The root behind that is one has considered itself a HW manufacturer that provides SW for its HW and the other a SW author that is now heading into HW).

Ultimately facts are only relevant when they affect your own usage case, so everyone is narrow minded when choosing a tool. This is a deal for a Mac, I would hope most come here as they need/want an OSX machine for some reason or another, in which case a PC is not an option therefore rendering the "facts" you state irrelevant. I've had no issues with peripherals, but if I ever did I'd likely switch peripherals before I switched jobs

It didn't exactly sound like you were voting it hot.

Your initial statement to me of "Macs have niche but that simply isn't it." was entirely wrong. What is MORE niche than not being able to develop for iOS except on Mac?
OrribleHarry
1 Sep 17 #155
I didn't vote cold.
thekanester
1 Sep 17 #154
Yeah, but I wasn't voting cold on a Mac deal simply because I don't need a Mac.

I'm voting hot on it because it's a good deal for those who need a Mac - can you not see that's the difference?

It's like some voting cold on a motorbike deal because they need a car.

Why do you take the time out of your day to come into a Mac thread and vote cold on it because it isn't the tool for your job? Answer that question and that gets to the crux of it all.
OrribleHarry
1 Sep 17 #153
You sir need to learn to read, you are now backtracking saying that Macs are more compatible, this is in direct contradiction to what you initially said.
If you read what I actually wrote in my original post it was in relation to a windows PC working with far more accessories (printers in my case) than a Mac.
You are the narrow minded one as you are only considering your own usage case. It's fact that PCs have massively more software and hardware choices.
thekanester
1 Sep 17 #152
My argument is completely valid - I can install windows on a Mac but I can't install osx readily on a PC. Depending on what I'm developing i.e. if I want to write .net apps then I can use Visual Studio natively in OSX these days.

The entire point of my argument is that I can do everything on a Mac but I can't on a PC so I don't have the option of going the PC route. Ergo, any good deal on a Mac is a cromulent deal.

I don't care that PCs are more flexible than Macs in general - I simply cannot use a PC for what I need to do.

You are indeed entitled to your opinion, but your initial statement of 'a Windows machine is more compatible than a Mac's is out and out wrong, as I can run all Windows software on a Mac via parallels or bootcamp but I can't run and Mac software on a standard PC.

So don't start backtracking on your initial statement with platitudes such as 'well it's my opinion and I can have one if I want' when you first make inaccurate and inflammatory statements in the first instance then you can expect to get called out on it.
OrribleHarry
1 Sep 17 #151
Narrow minded? Absolutely no need....

I work in an environment where I get hands on experience of dozens of machines every week in a commercial environment so I am in a good position to have an informed opinion.

Your argument of writing pc software on a Mac involves running Windows! so technically no longer a Mac!. Very a poor reasoning indeed.

My point was that a PC can do more and has greater compatibility which is a fact.

I stated I had three Macs in a row and left them due to compatibility issues, which isn't skewed it's absolutely my experience and also my opinion, which I am fully entitled to have.

Arrived today after ordering last night and its brilliant, wasn't sure I'd like the new keyboard but do love it. Wasn't convinced about the Touchbar until I tried it properly and think its really quite cool. Don't think its an absolute necessity but once you have it I think you'll not want to go back which to be honest for anyone ever owning a Mac is exactly why we own a Mac isn't it?

Very very happy  Thanks OP once again.

Can anyone confirm if the £100 Currys cashback will work on this MacBook Pro purchase? The site is confusing, it's says 'Excluding all Macs' in the banner, however when clicking on eligible items, the MacBook Pro is shown. In the terms and condtions it says purchase of Mac until some time in August and then 'all laptops' until mid September. To me a MacBook Pro is a lap

There is going to be a learning curve when you switch OS, its not worth doing if you have no compelling reason to switch. My wife switched as she used my machines and gradually got used to the OS. She then found it far better (thats her opinion). For example the trackpad is light years ahead. Time Machine is integrated, as is Keychain and integration with her iPhone. Sleep/wake always works. Battery life is great. She rarely has an issue, whereas she often had some issue or another with Windows

The last two have improved considerably in the windows world, but were dire by comparison a few years ago. And she could achieve some of the others (not the trackpad/gestures, its still by far the best in the business), but not out of the box and invariably would involve some periodic maintenance.

However, if you're happy with windows why change? There are premium hardware options and Dell have reasonable service options (NBD repair for example).
thekanester
1 Sep 17 #147
It absolutely isn't and it shows how you want to massage the facts to fit your own narrow-minded argument. I make my living writing software on mobile and need a Mac to do so.

I can easily write Windows and Android software on Mac, either by using parallels or boot-camping it to be dual boot.

The reality of the situation is that it's easier for me to have both a Windows and osx machines on my desk for that.

However, without wrestling with the constant problems of maintaining a hackintosh I can't make iOS apps on a PC.

So PCs are industry standard except for making iOS apps, so even though you say they are more compatible than Macs, which they are, it makes your argument completely invalid.

Whenever a genuine deal comes up for something like this, the same Ill -informed opinions are trotted out as fact by folk because it supports their own use-case. Any different opinion is dismissed as some outlying, or as you so cleverly put it "lame".

Don't get me wrong, if I could buy an Asus Mac for half the price, then I would. I like the build quality of my Mac book, but I'd compromise and buy the cheaper device in a heartbeat. I don't love my Mac. It's a tool, like a table saw or a drill that enables me to do the job I'm paid to do.

It's okay to temper your views and not be so polarised on complete trivia. Who cares if some people like PCs and some prefer or need Macs? Is it that important to validate your own world view?

They are definitely something to try, especially if you are working in design. I've found my macbooks work well for longer compared to windows laptops. I also own a PC so I'm not "fan boy" of either. Places like John Lewis have a really good returns policy and price match currys so you can always buy one and if you dont like it then take it back for a refund.

Am genuinely in the market for a laptop, but am so torn. Have never had a Mac despite working in design, but the quality of Macbooks is undeniable.. They're just so dear. I like Windows, and OSX has actually been confusing to me in the past, but I'm sure ye'd get used to it. I've looked up a couple of the other names mentioned here that are Windows machines and they're either a similar price (XPS 13) or just some ridiculous gaming laptop.. The OS is a large part of the draw of an apple machine. They don't give you the best specs for the money but the hardware and software works very well together.

I'm not an apple user btw I just appreciate that everyone has their own requirements for a PC, I have used apple and find them to be decent enough.

I just got the 15" inch from Amazon for £1,920. It's a fantastic machine so far.

I'm not an Apple fan boy at all but I do love their laptops. Its super fast, beautiful, excellent components like the screen and great battery life. It's expensive but if you need or like OSX (I need it for work) then they still have a good use case. Other laptops have not lasted anywhere near as long as my macbooks.

This is a good deal for those that want the OS and other things mentioned and wont suit everyone.

I also have a Surfacebook which just doesn't compare and will be going on gumtree soon!

I purchased a Surface Pro in fact just purchased my second SP recently this was after 3 Macs in a row.
Both have their pros and cons but what tipped me over the edge to leave Macs was compatibility....anything that didn't have "Mac compatible" on the box (with an additional premium) was a chore to get working.
After returning 3 printers to PC World on my third visit I purchased my first SP and now I can simply use any accessories I like as absolutely everything has a windows driver, only some things work with a Mac.
Oh and I couldn't go back to not having a touch screen either.

I do still have and use my 2012 MPB but only for browsing Internet really.

It worked.

Macbook: £1299
Windows Laptop: £189.99
WIN10 Discount: -£148.90

Total cost: £1340.09

I took the Windows laptop back and they offered a refund of £170.99.

Cash cost after refund: £1169.10

I bought £1,150 of PC World vouchers through a corporate discount scheme with an 8% discount at a cost of £1058, a further £92 saving, making the actual outlay £1077.10.

Then there's potentially:
4% cashback on the original price minus VAT - £41.56
£100 cashback from PC World on their promotion (Unlikely)

All in, best case if both the cashback's are paid, that's £935.54 outlay.

And that's before counting the rewards on the credit card when buying the vouchers and the VAT & Tax savings as it's for business use.

Thanks OP.

I have always been a firm advocate of apple, and their products. I waited and waited for the new Macbook Pro. Between the cost and that gimmicky touch bar and the relative poor spec I reluctantly moved away from apple.

I purchased a Dell XPS 3 i7, 32gb, and 512 ssd for around £300 less than intro level macbook.

I do get, that they 'just work' and build quality and customer service is second to none. But, there is a tipping point, where too much is to much. Just my input and views.
Mentos
31 Aug 17 #101
I don't believe that is true, there is a diagnostic connector to allow data recovery if the logic board fails:

9to5mac.com/201…rs/

Also given the type of SSD Apple use, its prohibitively expensive to "upgrade" the drive yourself even if it wasn't soldered. You're much better off buying the drive you need from day one, sell and re-buy if you need a bigger drive later, pay for an out of warranty repair should the drive fail out of warranty.

As a historic example I have the previous model and after a couple of years there still wasn't a viably priced third party drive

And whilst we're on the topic, a lot is made of soldered RAM/SSD's. To be honest of all the laptops we go through, its been a decade since I've touched the RAM/HDD on any of them. I wonder how many people that moan about soldered components actually ever swap such components on machines of this type. I suspect many are thinking back to the distant past or comparing to standard/fatter laptops. As an example I had a Vaio P at one point and the 1.8" drive was prohibitively expensive to bother swapping out for much of its life.

Its only just had a major update last year.

Given their track record, I wouldn't expect another one for ~3-4 years. It will most likely receive an annual/bi-annual spec upgrade until then. The recent 2017 upgrade from Sky Lake to Kaby Lake being an example.

As others have said, these are way over priced. Yes, Apple hands down have the best support if anything goes wrong but you can get better for a lot less. (Maybe not ASUS because their driver support for example, and build is pretty poor.

But you can get something like a Dell for like £1000 with same/better specs, and Dell are another who are a bit over priced but like Apple they build good machines.

The hard drive is replaceable/upgradable in the non-TB models. It is soldered onto the logic board in the TB models. If your hard drive goes, you need a new logic board. If your logic board or video chip goes, you lose your data.

I was specifically talking about the Edustore, I believe they require an ac.uk email. I've seen the posts RE obtaining an NUS card, but then you go to Apples Higher Ed store where the discounts are now lower (10%) and no longer include the free 3 year HW warranty :disappointed:

The Edustore is legit (email Apple if you're worried) and the discounts are similar to the old Higher Ed discounts Apple used to offer. The top end 15" SKU is ~£250 cheaper then via Apples Higher Ed store, even with the current beats offer thats a better deal. Plus it includes a 4 year warranty, albeit third party rather then AppleCare :disappointed:

Surely the HP will sell for £100 unopened on eBay. Win win?

Anyone can get a NUS card for about £20 by signing upto an online course, when you get your NUS account you click through the website for student discount. Been posted loads of time soon on HUKD. Plus at the moment you get free headphones which could get over £100 on eBay. Although theedustore gives bigger discounts, just checked a MacBook Pro 15 with 3 yr AppleCare was £2600 on Apple education, £3028 on regular Apple Store, but only £2200 with 4 yr warranty on theedustore. Although theedustore doesn't have an address on their contact page, looks dodgy to me.

In what way is mac os better than windows, personal 40 plus years experience in computers and I find mac os the most unintuitive os you can use, ios is even worse, where's the damn back button and why can't I easily print from an ios device. Macs look nice but they are not powerful just well developed and marketed and sure they look nice but that's it.

It is authentic and also includes 4 year third party warranty. But:

1) You must have bought the non toucher model, the cheapest touch bar model is £1418 (unless it was different for the 2016's).

2) You have to be in higher education (student or employee) to use them. Or atleast know someone with an .ac.uk email address you can use to setup the account.

That is nothing like the macbook at all.

The Acer swift 7 is the only roughly equivalent deal on here for close to 700 but the screen isn't as good as the Mac. Plus it has windows, people shopping for a Mac don't want a Windows laptop and vice versa.

Different form factor. Poorer screen. SSD/HDD versus one of the fastest stock SSD's in a notebook. Twice the weight. Windows instead of OSX. 3 hours battery life. By comparison a great big plastic behemoth. Yeah thats the same, if you got the laptop beer goggles on

There is another thing with a Mac vs Windows Laptop - the retained value. You regularly see used 5 or 6 year old Macbook pros pre dating the retina screen going for £400 plus. A similar Windows laptop would be achieving at most £150-£200 . And they are still serviceable at that age too because you can buy every screw, cable and other parts very easily on eBay/Amazon. Tried the same thing with my MSI Gaming laptop which is newer and the parts are non-existent or very expensive.

I have the touch bar model and love it. I was not sure if I would use the bar bit or not but I really miss it when I use my desktop. It makes switching between screens incredibly fast and the crappy form filling is extremely quick with it. The screen is super bright and the battery lasts ages.
For those doing the "save your money buy windows" well, no thanks and never again. My teens are students and both have the older MacBooks that they have had for three years now. They have never gone wrong and they are still as quick as the day they were unboxed. when we have had an issue (spilled drink on it) apple were excellent and had it sorted inside of 24 hours, not the 4 weeks crap that curry's pedal.

I guess I could take it into the store to process the refund and if they they take off the full promotion from the refund, just keep it and sell it on instead.

It's either 10% off an already reduced Macbook, or an extras Windows laptop for ~£40

Cheers OP
Mentos
30 Aug 17 #44
The non-tb version has a different processor (although in real world most probably wouldn't notice the difference). On the flip side it has a bigger battery

Personally wouldn't shell out more for the TB, but touch ID is a different matter, i'd pay the premium just for that. Constantly punching in my password to retrieve keychain passwords for plethora of dev servers which becomes tiresome and isn't secure when people are around.
CouldntThinkOfAUsername
30 Aug 17 #43
Yeah with poorer build quality, materials, speakers, lower contrast screen, no force trackpad, worse battery, slower ram and ssd, no USB c and if it goes wrong you don't have an Asus Store for replacement.

Worst of all, you have to use Windows. Windows on any prebuilt PC is garbage, even worse on laptops, macOS thumps Windows for laptops.
blundy_5
30 Aug 17 #42
Yeah its a risk with a high payout if they refund it the way you would want them to
pete1993
30 Aug 17 #41
That's a good idea.
If you returned the Windows Laptop, how much would they refund you though?
The full value of the Windows laptop
10% of the Windows Laptop value
100% of the promotion cost

If this works, this is a bargain.
padamowicz93
30 Aug 17 #40
And also there is no point to trying to convince ordinary Asus users that MACs are worth it as they will never know what you are talking about unless they ever had a pleasure of using a MB and actually knew what they were doing.
padamowicz93
30 Aug 17 #39
I got the same model but without touch bar (waste of money in my opinion) off ebay for £950 pounds with 3 years JL guarantee. You could not tell that it was previously used and only 25 battery cycles.

Yes lack of old fashioned ports can be a pain and should be considered when buying this but it doesn't bother me that much and it's so much lighter and thiner compared to the previous models.

ezzer72 to Themadcow
30 Aug 17 #37
I'm certainly above gaming.
Mentos to giorgiomrapetti
30 Aug 17 #34
Haha and that would be a crap solution for many of us.

In my case this is a tool for work. If you develop for iOS/OSX then you're going to really regret messing around with your suggested solution. Moreover, if you travel regularly, accessing all that horsepower sitting at home on the "1070 rig" isn't always trivial. I personally find it far better having everything on the road with me, rather then horsepower I don't need just so I can feel I got some sort of bargain, because it tends not to be a bargain when I factor in time wasted faffing around that could have been spent earning money instead (or enjoying more pleasurable pastimes).

Even in the case of my Wife who also prefers Macs and is just a casual user, she'd rather stick to an OS she is familiar and comfortable with. The gestures are great with refined realistic physics emulation, the trackpad is the best bar none (and i've tried many thanks to work), spaces works really well, timemachine is a breeze to use for a novice like her, the screen is excellent, she's familiar with the Apps now and it integrates really well with her iPhone out of the box. And to be frank since its a fixture almost everywhere she goes, she appreciates that it's pleasant to the eye.

In terms of cost, amortised over 3-4 years of daily use (for me both work and personal, but for her even casual use is a couple of hours a day), with at least a third of the original cost realised at resale (from personal experience), it really doesn't seem as bad as the headline price. There are lots of other things we buy, that based on usage are far worse value for money.

Of course your own requirements may dictate a different path is optimal, but kindly credit us with having an equally sound basis for our choices unless we reveal otherwise.

30 Aug 17 #36
Yes everyone should buy lower priced products because some people won't buy this themselves. What a load of balls.

Same applies to banning all premium products because budget products essentially do the same thing more or less. And a tent is adequate too. :face_with_monocle:

Mentos to getknk
30 Aug 17 #17
Unfortunately for the 13", 16GB is BTO only :disappointed: Means there are unlikely to be any offers for those. Only options are refurb (unlikely as doubt many return a BTO) or via Student discount/Edustore. Edustore has better prices, but only for the standard SKU's, BTO's the discount isn't that much better then straight 10% student discount via uni days/etc.

15" has 16GB as standard so some chance of finding offers there if you're prepared to jump up.
getknk to Mentos
30 Aug 17 #28
definitely. the new 15" is my dream machine
Mentos to getknk
30 Aug 17 #29
Ah in that case check out the Edustore.co.uk if you are in higher education (or know someone that has an .ac.uk email). The top end 15" SKU (MPTT2B) is £2,188.90 (no beats included, but much cheaper then via unidays) And it includes 4 year warranty. The other models have a similar amount off.

I'm contemplating jumping up from 13" to 15" as they've finally reduced the footprint and my workflow would probably benefit. But as a long time 13" or smaller laptop user Im apprehensive.

Very little difference between Kaby Lake and Sky Lake. The biggest is hardware 10-bit 4K HEVC codec, the 15" dGPU has that anyway but on the 13" it will make a difference if you plan to watch a lot of 4K material.

The equivalent 2017 model (MPXX2B) is £1,418.44 (with 4 year third party warranty) for those that need/want Kaby Lake (you don't get the beats though).
