IMPORTANT EDIT: To buy this laptop at the frankly amazing price of £899.99, go to lenovo.com/rew…/uk and find the Levovo Y520 and use the code !LENOVOREWARDS! (see the post below for more comments).

A huge thanks to The_Hoff for this information!

I recently posted a deal for the Medion X7847 laptop which did well. However not everyone wants a big, hefty 17" laptop so here's something similar in the smaller & lighter 15.6" form factor...

The cheapest, £999.99 version of the Lenovo Y520 on Lenovo's online store comes with the following spec...

i7-7700HQ CPU
Windows 10
15.6" FHD IPS AntiGlare 1920x1080 screen
8.0GB DDR4 (2400MHz)
128GB SSD + 1TB HDD (5400 rpm)
Nvidia 1060 MaxQ 3GB GDDR5 GPU
1 x USB Type-C port
2.52 kg weight
Backlit keyboard
One year warranty

At a penny shy of a grand, this machine isn't cheap (or even a deal!) but it does tick a lot of the boxes that some gamers look for (i7 not i5, a definite IPS screen, fast RAM, a 1060 GPU, Type C).

It's an extra £100 for the 6GB version of the GPU and an extra £100 for a 256GB SSD (in place of the standard 128GB one) so the base version is where the value lies.

Here's a decent review of the Lenovo Y520 (with the lesser 1050 Ti GPU) which praised it for it's relative quietness and good thermal management...

notebookcheck.net/Len…tml

For those concerned that this laptop comes with the newer, less capable Max Q version of the 1060 GPU, here's a good article on how the old and new versions compare...

notebookcheck.net/Nvi…tml

Hopefully someone will find this of interest...

Edit: Use the discount code LEN4600 to get this price (thanks to Dokko for this)

I'm a bit late to the party but I managed to pick up one of these today.

I was one of the people that failed to get the AIO system but used the apology 20% code to get the £899 laptop for £719 - Happy Days! :innocent:

Wow! Seriously impressed! What's an AIO system and how do I get the apology code????
happylarry to Joe90_guy
4 Oct 17 #69
It was all part of a mistake made by Lenovo- they took orders they couldn't complete and had to cancel them all. I rang them and they send me a personalized code for the 20%. Complain about anything and I think you would get something off. I could have got 10% off from work via Xexec but 20% was better.

Understand below linked laptop has standard 1060 6GB, but correct me if I am wrong...it has i5-7300 instead of i7-7700, but if the GPU is not Max-Q type, I think it's better bang for buck, thoughts?

Tricky question if I'm honest...

The HP has the full fat 1060 and will be a bit (but not visually noticeably) quicker. It also has the G-Sync monitor which will be a bit (but not a lot) better. On the other hand, it costs £100 more and, if you're talking equivalent performance, you're going to have to spend more on top to add an SSD to it. Regarding the SSD addition, these things always look so easy in theory but in my experience can be a real pain in the backside and it's something I personally always try to avoid.

If you're buying one of these machines, the presumption is you're doing so to play games. The question perhaps you should ask yourself is, how much does 'playing games' actually matter and how much should you be spending on it? (as opposed to paying off the mortgage or taking the wife and kids on holiday).

For me, I refuse to play the 'I must have THE best machine that money can buy game'. It smacks too much of teenage immaturity. I'm happy to stick with my two year old lappie, sacrifice a bit of game detailling I'd probably not notice anyway and keep my money in the bank. However, if my ASUS died tomorrow, I'd buy the Lenovo, not the HP simply because for me, the buck takes precedence over the bang.

Incredible price for the spec. Would have bought it if it wasn't for the sub-par screen. Great deal though!

For gaming it's fine. I do a bit of amature graphic design work here and there so looking for a screen with decent colour accuracy and coverage. The reviews I've read have said it's not great in that department so I've held off.

Glad that you're happy with your new lappie and glad that the post helped someone.

I did think very hard about getting this for myself, especially when it dropped to £899.99. My 'problem' is that it's still only 2.5 years ago since I bought my ASUS, which I bought convinced it would be a laptop that would finally 'last me a few years'. Yes it's only got an Nvidia 850m DDR3 GPU and no it doesn't have an SSD or a backlit keyboard, but right now it's still managing to play AC Syndicate at 900p with a mix of Very High & High settings. Of course the Y520 would have been better but relative to what I have now, would it have been £900's worth of better? In my case, probably not...

Joe90_guy to rikhd
6 Aug 17 #17
I'd agree with that but with one caveat. If you buy a laptop like this, with its power hungry GPU, then in all likelihood, you're going to be using it plugged into a socket most of the time. If say you wanted to do heavy gaming on a train commute or a long plane journey, a bigger battery would help some but chances are it would be drained by the time you get to your destination.
bbfb123 to Joe90_guy
7 Aug 17 #52
If your buying a laptop to plug it in all the time why would you not buy a desktop computer instead and save money?!
Joe90_guy to bbfb123
8 Aug 17 #53
My lowly 15" gaming laptop hardly ever leaves the house but I still would always opt for it rather than a desktop. The reasons are space, simplicity, convenience & location. Our house is smallish so space is at a premium. I could go for a desktop and monitor but that would probably mean setting it up permanently (along with a desk) in one of the bedrooms. Me & the wife tend to like to share the same space even if we're doing different things. As often as not, I might be playing Assassin's Creed (loving Syndicate at the moment!) on my laptop on the dining room table while she's watching Emmerdale. When I'm not gaming, the laptop just folds up and resides, out of the way, on one of the dining room chairs.

I think the last desktop I bought was in 1993! Ever since, it's been laptops for me. Yes I know that you can get more gaming bang for the buck from a desktop and that they're easier to upgrade but I won't ever be going back to one just because laptops are just so much more convenient.

What lets it down for me is the 8gb RAM - on the higher spec (6gb 1060 model) for another £100 you can get all of the above, with 16gb RAM and a faster hard drive from a HP omen (they're also 17.3 inch which I prefer, though I read that you wanted to post a 15 inch laptop for people)

I don't doubt that, but if this breaks just after the 1 year warranty period, you're looking at a hefty charge to get it repaired - or you're £900 worse off... Hence why 3 years is always minimal when spending this much money

I need a new laptop. I'm not a gamer but I freelance and need tonnes of videos and images for work, both creating and storing. My current Ideapad S510 can't really cope. Is this spec overkill do you think?
Joe90_guy to britchic4
6 Aug 17 #15
If you're not a gamer then you probably shouldn't buy this laptop. At a rough estimate, the Nvidia 1060 video card alone will make up about 25% of the cost of this laptop! If you're not going to use all of that graphics oomph, then you could get something more suited to your needs that's a lot cheaper.

For anyone interested in the difference between the 3GB and 6GB versions of the Nvidia 1060, it seems like for 1080p, there isn't a massive difference for most games but specific games (Hitman for example) do benefit from the extra RAM. It's all explained here...
