I've got one of these and I put a 60w bulb in it - works well. The PIR is a little over sensitive and had a habit of picking up passing cars so masked off with tape and problem solved.
It's bright enough for what I need it to do as it's used in conjunction with a floodlight at a different angle.

seems quite dim for an outside light. 500lm only puts it on a par with an old 40W bulb. This may be one of those lights that you can see when they are on, rather than be able to see because they are on. If the PIR means it is meant to be used as a security light it's not going to startle an intruder, rather give them a gentle glow
