Have you looked at the reviews? It really should be good with those specs

Was going to buy then read that that none of their products have a manufacturers warranty, so has made me change my mind as I've never heard of this company.

After having 4 HTC phones (2 mine and 2 OH) and needing to use HTC support for faulty phones for 3 of the 4 I swore I would never buy HTC again.
If I were to give HTC repair service a score out of 10 it would be -600. One time they swore they sent my original phone back to me but it was a different colour, IMEI and the screen looked like someone had sanded it, They had the nerve to tell me that was how they received it! mine had been in flawless condition in an armor case for the 3 months I had had it!
seriously a different colour and IMEI... Like I believe I sent them a different phone to what I had thought!
oh HTC just makes me so mad.

HTC sadly, while having good hardware on paper, and along with the other Chinese brands, is a prime example of why people pay more for Samsung, Sony, Apple and so on - the customer support is way better, some call it overpriced for the hardware, I would say it's a price worth paying.

I don't know, Apple said that the way people hold their phones was wrong, blamed the customers for where they stuck the antenna, they knew they were in the wrong but their reluctance to admit it made them look stubborn and childish, yes eventually they admitted their fault and gave away bumpers but its not the only time that their error they have tried to blame on customers. Also I disagree with the way they deal with human rights. they knew of the poor working conditions in the factories at foxcon where their stuff was being made. the high number of accidents and the high suicide rate. Anyone with a moral compass should not need that much pressure applied to change things. So I cant give money to a company so morally bankrupt and unwilling to admit to its mistakes.
Samsung again another company that tried to deny wrong doing. bad batteries at first were denied, blamed customers for using wrong chargers and even when they did finally recall they only treated the customers of each country as well as they had to, that's why the US customers got a better deal than the UK customers with the recall.
Samsung aren't as evil as Apple, but please remember you can tell them what they are doing is ok by you or if you don't like it by boycotting their stuff.
of course if you like morally bankrupt companies who treat their customers poorly and have no respect for the working
Sony? they shouldn't be brought into any sensible debate on modern mobile phones, Sony Ericsson Walkman or cyber shot back in the naughties yes, now no. Sony have heard of updates they just don't quite understand the meaning so once a phone is released don't expect one. while there is nothing wrong with the phones other than an incomprehensible lack of updates by sony, the phones also don't really have an exceptional feature. Tell someone you have a new Sony phone and there is this awkward silence for a moment where the person tries to think of something nice to say about the phone like "oh I hear that's got a great camera" but they cant think of anything they have heard that's good about it, the seconds are mounting up and its starting to get super awkward now so they blurt out the only thing the can which is one of 2 things, if their polite they will say "oh that's nice" if they are blunt they will say "why the F**k would you buy one of those?". And that's the problem, there isn't a good reason to buy one, their phones are mediocrity, it tells people you have no imagination, it tells your employer that you make ok judgements at best and it tells your lover that they could probably do better, Sony phones make your parents ask if they did something wrong while raising you, and your children see your phone as the technological equivalent of dad dancing.
TL;DR? sorry, I don't cater to people with no attention span.

I think you have too much time on your hands. I mentioned those three companies as I've used their hardware extensively and didn't get mugged off if it went wrong in warranty as much as I would have had it been HTC or a Chinese grey-import job.
No, I don't think buying a Sony really says all that about you - tongue in cheek or otherwise. Fwiw, Sony are really the only company that caters for the small-phone crowd, has pretty decent cameras and other niche designs - the side mounted fingerprint scanner is undeniably better than a back mounted one right next to the camera on the S8 and they still use high quality LCD not AMOLED, why does this matter? Cost of repair, better sunlight readability and no image burn if you use it for Google Maps or similar - competition and variety is important even if you don't personally want to buy a Sony.

oh thank god, someone who realises some of the things I say are as little tongue in cheek. Ok Sony aren't that bad but I do stand by that they just aren't that exceptional either. I mostly object to them as a security thing, updates are so delayed or don't materialise on so many android phones, of the offenders Sony is one of the worst big brands. Honestly if I had my way I would still be using a Lumia but Microsoft started removing apps from their own OS and started making them available on competitors stores. Lumia had everything, more open than iOS more secure than Android. it was the perfect balance... it just never got the user base to attract app devs and never got the app library to attract users, a total catch 22.
And yes, 100% right I have too much time, I sent the woman to the spa, she needs a chill day as she has to deal with me daily.

You get a thumbs up for making me laugh out loud.
I mostly agree with that, though Sony have provided more updates than some, most of the X series are on Android 7 as are the later Z series. Samsung stopped at Android 5.0.2 for modern devices like the Tab S2, I think this has only just got Android 6? Personally and objectively speaking I do think Samsung are worse than Sony unless you have a bleeding edge handset (e.g. S8).

I'd probably recommend a Sony Xperia XZ - one of the most underrated handsets in the last year, nearly stock UI, great display and camera, fast performance and a reasonably flat display so you can actually use a tempered glass protector on it.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 I've had for years and fancy an upgrade. What kind of different in performance do you think I'd get with this phone vs the Galaxy S4 I have now?

depends, your s4 might live another 2 years, the HTC most likely isn't going to. you would be better of with Alcatel or Bush than any HTC... but that's not me recommending getting an Alcatel or a Bush.
