I got one of these when the deal was 70 quid off. For the cash, they are a great piece of hardware. I up it to 12gb of memory and installed a Xeon E3-1240. I've installed UNRAID which is running Plex server, DNS, backup, Sickbeard and other dockers with a Minecraft server for the kids. Its currently running 56Deg (need to sort out active cooling) Yes there is better hardware out there but a fully flexible server/nas for about 100 quid? well worth it.

Have one if these running freeNAS on an old 8GB USB 2, from the internal USB slot, added another 4GB ECC DIMM (back when it was cheaper), and it's running great. I've actually moved on to another build for my main server, that's running an i7 6700k for my VMs and for some basic NAS work too, the older box above is just the backup NAS/server now and only gets booted up for backups of the main server etc. Very handy machines, and for what you're getting for that circa £125 is a steal, you can run freenas with 4GB if you're only serving a few clients simultaneously with media, and plex server is also good. Both 9.10 and 11 versions of freenas run no problems :smile:

Takes 4 drives, stacks nicely, takes ECC. I've been waiting for a deal on these to expand my ceph cluster, though I would prefer something that could take registered DDR3 ECC since that's super cheap.

I use ESXi at home for a lab environment and memory is by far the biggest problem. These little HP boxes only go up to 32GB, so can't do very much.

According to the HPE leaflet on cashback it states
Product must have been invoiced and delivered between 1 August - 31 August 2017.
Obviously, this isn't going to be delivered within that period unless you order for Next Day. I'm not too sure they'll know it's been delivered within that time, anyone had any issues before claiming outside the period?

I use ESXi myself at home on it. It is plenty powerful enough however you will need to fork out to buy more RAM. ESXi needs 8GB minimum I believe.

According to t'internet you can run normal DDR3L, you just can't mix ECC and non-ECC.

If that's all you want if for you're better off running W2K12 bare metal. Then if you want to run any VMs use something like VirtualBox, or it pains me to say it... Hyper-V. I feel like I need a wash.
Also W2K12 is a overkill for Plex and may limit what other software you can install. Windoze 10 Pro or Linux would be simpler.

My idea is to use ESXi to run different enviroments to get up to speed on the recent tech! Haven't really touched a server since SBS2008 but would also like to have a Plex server running locally for movies

ESXI's good for entirely different OSes, but for efficiency something like docker would be better.

Docker is fine for running multiple packaged apps on the same OS without their dependencies interfering with each other, great for a coding lab. But it's only useful if all your apps can run on the same OS.
For lab environments you need a hypervisor, but there's nothing stopping running some things inside containers.

In that case you are better off building something yourself based on a Skylake chip on a motherboard that has 4 DIMM slots. That way you can go up to 64GB of RAM. When you buy memory, get 16GB DIMMs even if you start with 1 or 2, that way you have options. I built a lab the learn the VMware vRealize suite and ended up having to go to 96GB of RAM on a Xeon E5 chip in a socket 2011 motherboard.
Thanks Mike, I have a couple of Servers here at the mo but they are HP Ml110 old and a Dell T100 (DDR2 ram) both Xeon but neither quick enough to run Plex or the latest ESXi currently it's on 5.5 (Dell)

From what I have heard yes it can be, not sure what socket it is though so not sure on cost! I've missed it anyway as the t's&c's state it has to be delivered by 31st, I'll wait til next time or find a 2nd hand server.

Depends what you want to run. For lab environments a dual core is mostly fine, the biggest problem is memory. You can oversubscribe CPU, but oversubscribe memory and your paging down to disk and it all grinds to a halt.
