Costco have reduced the HP Spectre 13" laptop by £120 + VAT.
Looks like a decent machine... I am sure people will let me know if you can buy better for less.

Not voting it cold, but the 8GB RAM would be a bit of a show stopper for me personally. I'd like to see 16GB in there.
512GB SSD is fine and upgradable in the future if required, though less so of a requirement these days as so much stuff can be cloud based.

GPU? If it's some intel shiz this is cold. You can get an asus 12gb ram i7 512ssd for 800 mark and that comes with a 940mx card which isn't CRAZY good but it's good enough to pay some decent games on medium setting.

Is that 10.4mm thick and does it weigh 1.1kg?

Will it be as thin and sleek as this though? You pays your money....

After my samsung laptop packed up, I recently bought a top HP laptop, one of the keyboard keys weren't fully functioning and the laptop was returned for a full refund. I then bought an Asus laptop with great spec, but had a serious battery charging issue, which is apparently well documented, after very poor customer service the laptop was returned for a full refund. I then bought a macbook pro, best machine ever!

I have a quite similar model. 13-4007na !3" . It's very quiet. A bit heavier than this model. i7.

Nice model but not sure it's the best value for money. Just grabbed the new Envy 13 for less than this with very similar specs and an MX150 dGPU. Only difference is the i7 which is about 10% performance difference - unlikely most will notice given the general usecase of an ultrabook (not to mention the significant performance boost in gaming of the MX150).

8GB RAM is a non-starter for me but seems like an OK deal.

I've an Envy 13 too. An i7 variant with the 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD.
Fantastic machine, however i would flag that ram isnt upgradable (i suspect this is the same). I'm used to Dell and older HP machines where you could simply drop more in.
Otherwise, a great machine.

My HP's graphics card blew on me recently. Replaced it but will look for a different maker next time...

In a laptop? HP also don't make graphics cards...

My daughter's HP laptop is now a few years old and very noisy, with the fans blowing a lot. I took it to bits, expecting to find it full of fluff. But it wasn't. I guess the fans get noisy with age. And maybe the thermal compound on the cpu dries out. Fans are, of course, custom units that are hard to get.

I couldn't find this particular one on the Costco website, but I did spot the 4K version. For much more money, of course.
I'm not sure what the point is of an i7 in a lightweight laptop, but it does pretty much future-proof the machine for a long time

those ultra processors are pretty poor performing so i7 will be no more than i3 in desktop version

It's just the dual core version so 10 to 15 percent faster than the i5

i7 is really bragging rights. It's the same silicon as the i5 just binned higher so it's clocked and turbos a little faster but you may never notice. It's definitely not any more future proofed...
It is essentially marketing that tricks the average person - for example a first-gen i7 will still get trounced in power and performance by a 7th gen i5 quad but just by the name people won't know

I used to be a big fan of hp. My first 3 laptops were hp. Love looks and for the price, they give you a lot. But I noticed they suffer from overheating which causes a lot of noise from the fan. Been put by this plus never really survived more than 2 years. Can Anyone comment on recent HP laptopsv

Cheap or expensive? I've had cheap Lenovos fall apart and expensive ones last forever. Same with HP, Dell, any other manufacturer.
Fans wear out regardless of manufacturer though, a cheap sleeve-bearing fan lasts about 3.5 years and gets noisier as it ages. Worth replacing since it's maybe £10 worth of parts. More expensive and longer lasting ball bearing ones (5.5 years lifespan) will be in use on higher end models.

The first one was around £800 the other two were around the £1000. Had the same issue with Sony. The only ones that lasted have been dell for me. But they are very pricy

Not difficult to find the i5 for less, but not the i7
