So cheap for this particular pod machine. Makes the best tasting espresso out of all pod machines (I've had this and Tasimo, Lavazza and Nespresso machine) but the pods are expensive (~50p each but sometimes down to ~35p on offer / bulk buy).

best pod coffee I have ever had, these are the capsules espressocrazy.com/cof…es/

unfortunately I have had 3 of these machines in 4 months and finally gave up, water chamber not registering and leaking problems all 3.

Cold for me. Hotpoint is a toxic brand with a terrible record of appliances catching fire.

So you must hate Beko and Bosch as well then because I'm in the trade and they all do it because of neglect of the consumer. Water and electricity don't go together especially in filth.
4810510 to gr8h8me
20 Aug 17 #8
I'm not 'in the trade' but just bought a Bosch tumble dryer for £500 as I couldn't find anything to suggest they were dangerous. Hotpoint were aware of the danger their products and done nothing. I used the Which? rating to decide.

So when a considerable number of appliances catch fire, resulting in a safety recall, it is as much, if not more, the customers' fault as it is the manufacturers'? You don't happen to work as an adviser to a certain US president, by any chance?
SlightlyFoxed to 4810510
21 Aug 17 #27
Oh look, an uninformed FUD spreader. Hotpoint/Indesit did have that problem with tumbledryers catching fire. But, of course, the idiot brigade immediately assume that all their appliances are faulty. Grenfell tower - the fire originated in a flat that had a Hotpoint fridge, so that MUST be the cause - hotpoint appliances are about as rare as Ford cars.

I am a service engineer for kitchen appliances and I can tell you, without doubt, the "flawed" tumbledryers only caught fire after being seriously neglected. You strip the rear panel off and see the buildup and you know they aren't cleaning the filter as often as stated in the manual (which nobody reads).

I own a Hotpoint Dryer, and Indesit Washer - both are well cared for and have never given us a moment's trouble. Go and have a look at Beko or the crap that Currys peddle as their own brand. You'll soon run into problems.

Oh here we go a 'service engineer' supporting Hotpoint. Of course you are correct Hotpoint are spending millions because consumers are negligent.

I'm clearly not as knowledgeable - or as into personal insults as you - but Which? rate Hotpoint as Don't Buy and I'll stick with them.

You know nothing about Grenfell so you should keep your mouth shut.

These machines are approaching inkjet printers in terms of the "razor and blades model" - sell the appliance at a loss and make your profit on the consumables.

If you want decent coffee, buy a cafetiere and get freshly ground coffee. Cheaper, easier to clean, results just as good, plus you have a huge range of coffees to choose from, not just what the pod people want to sell you.

cafetiere and pressure brewed coffee are 2 different things.

if you want great coffee without an espresso machine then get an Aeropress
TN567 to jough
20 Aug 17 #13
Aeropress are decent but for me I bit the bullet on a bean to cup, knocks spots off everything ive had previously which included a tassimo, nespresso and aeropress

One that did surprise me on my long coffee journey was the zyliss cafetiere hot mug for about £7, decent easy enough brew
roooby to jfhopkin

These are really decent too, as well as being easier to clean/more compact than a cafetiere:

Nothing is easier to clean than a machine that doesn't need cleaning is it? You might might be able to argue that a cafetiere with good coffee is better but how could you argue that a cafetiere is easier than banging a capsule in a machine that dispenses, instantly, straight into your cup?
mattturner756
20 Aug 17 #7
Worth pointing out with pods you can’t recycle them - with cafetière you can recycle the packaging (if you buy starbucks ground coffee... and you get a free latte)

Still a good deal thou, just pointing out a lot of people think most pods are recyclable when they aren’t.
4810510 to mattturner756

Nespresso will give you a postage free bag to recycle genuine capsules.
Rickardo to mattturner756
21 Aug 17 #31
I can't speak for this brand, but as someone else has said, original Nespresso pods are recyclable if you use their own service. I used to buy Lidl's own compatible Nespresso pods, which were plastic and recyclable by my council, once I had stripped the foil off the top and emptied the grounds. I now use Percol's compostable Nespresso compatible pods.

I was trying to work out what it reminded me of.

Like many of these capsule machines you pay relatively modest amounts for the machines and then pay through the nose for the consumables.

Bear in mind this machine is a couple of years old now and Hotpoint not having a very long history of making coffee machines you might be better off with a more mainstream coffee machine, the machine looks like its not being sold by very many other retailers.

Got one on Groupon for £24.99 a few months ago. They come with at least 20 pods probably about as much worth as the machine cost. It's under the sink now, the refillable pods on eBay are garbage and the pods you get with them are impossible to reuse. Total white elephant and the original very very very expensive pods are nothing to write home about.

I own this, AMAZING coffee... but you can buy the reusable pods on AliExpress. You can then use your own coffee.

The Pods are worth it. I buy the Black ones as they taste amazing.

Well worth it!
peterkay11 to Walgeon
20 Aug 17 #22
Looked at one of these m.aliexpress.com/s/i…tml rather expensive though didn't think the cost was worth the risk. Got some plastic ones off eBay which kept leaking, think they're are purposely designed so you cannot mimic the original pods. The dolce gusto reusable pods and Nespresso work so much better and a lot cheaper.

For anyone who tries this you have to experiment with the coarseness of the grind to make the reusable pods work but when you get the grind right and correct amount in the pod it opens up so much more choice and cost effectiveness to these pod machines.

If you can't be bothered to grind, the best coffee to use is the lavazza quality Rossa it works a treat with the reusable pods.

Hope this helps anyone who is thinking of buying.
Walgeon to peterkay11
21 Aug 17 #25
I didn't get this. They sell plastic ones. Different colours have different uses. Black I think is for expresso but the red and brown make faster cups. They do sell plastic ones or they did...
peterkay11 to Walgeon
21 Aug 17 #33
Think the different colours represent what type of coffee is in the pod. They do not represent any difference in how the coffee is dispensed.
The pods are glued shut and very hard to open. In fact I wouldn't even try as you will end up slicing the ends of your fingers off.

The plastic ones you can buy on eBay and Ali express are just a replica of the pod in which you can take the lid off, it has a rubber seal. The problem is; they leak as they do not properly seal. The design has made the pods impossible to use again.
Walgeon to peterkay11
23 Aug 17 #51
They do in some way. They have different size holes so the water comes out differently. You will notice it with the pods you buy also. Different colours have different water useage.
Walgeon to peterkay11
23 Aug 17 #52
i am sorry, but you're very wrong here. The pods you buy, and that I own, are very different from the normal ones. I have used them hundreds of times and have 0 issues.
peterkay11 to Walgeon
23 Aug 17 #53
Which pods are you talking about? The illy pods for this machine? They were identical except from them being different colours.

They did not have different sized holes and the coffee came out exactly the same. BS

We used to have a pod machine (Tassimo, in our case; but they're all much of a muchness). Got sick of the waste in packaging and mediocre coffee. Saved up for a while and bought the bottom end DeLonghi bean-to-cup machine instead. They're frequently around £250 on sale and the cheap ones have the same guts as the expensive ones. The cheap ones are just a bit less pretty, and don't froth your milk automagically. It's then your choice whether to spend a similar amount to the pods for *really excellent* coffee (Red Brick from Square Mile is beyond heaven, but something like £30/kg), or save a whole lot of cash and still buy coffee that's better than what's in the pods in the £10/kg range.

21 Aug 17 #38
If you plan on having a coffee machine for a few years then a bean to cup machine has to make sense financially. Capsule machines make decent coffee but not as good as fresh ground imho.

Working on an approximate cost of 8p a shot for a £250 budget btc machine it would pay for itself after less than a thousand cups, about 18 months use at two cups a day compared to this machine. And you get better coffee !
peterkay11 to wobster
21 Aug 17 #39
Bean to cup do make sense unless they decide to die on you just after the warranty period. Another costly paperweight!
Chasloyal to peterkay11
21 Aug 17 #42
Can't get my head round the fact how anyone could come to the conclusion these pod machines make financial sense.

Yeah bean to cup machines are not cheap to buy but we must go through half a dozen cups daily minimum, sometimes two or three times that, so even over the course of a month at 25 pence a pod or whatever they are it would be astronomical money never mind over the course of a year or two

I love the anti-pod brigade. If you're happy to go bean to cup and you use those coffee beans up before they go stale (which doesn't take long at all!) then fair enough.

I've owned a bean to cup from delonghi. I've owned a Gaggia Classic with a dosing burr grinder. I've owned a Rancilio Sylvia. None of them gave the results I was getting with a 3 group Rancilio machine at work.

Every one had the disadvantage of the beans going stale before I'd finished them. So many people seem happy to drink stale coffee.

I was was utterly sceptical about pod machines (especially after trying wretched Tassimo and Dolce Gusto coffees) but I'm so glad I gave Nespresso a chance.

The drawback is that Nespresso's coffees aren't that interesting. They're all a bit safe However they're consistent and the coffee stays fresh for much longer. I'm happy to pay the price for a coffee that I don't have to use up in a week or two before it goes stale.

If I want better, more distinctive coffees, I buy pods from Colonna.

Any wannabe coffee snobs would do well to read Maxwell Colonna Dashwood's thoughts on pod coffee. He's a true coffee expert and he doesn't have to snort at pod machines to try and prove it..!

Worth a punt at this price, voted hot. Main machine is a bean to cup but this might be handy for the man cave.
SlightlyFoxed
25 Aug 17 #59
I didn't saw there wasn't a flaw in their machines that contributed to the problem - clearly enough to warrant the expense they are undertaking, there's more recalls/retro-active modifications than fear of litigation - but the fact is it ONLY becomes an issue when the machine aren't cleaned as often as stated.

No, you're not knowledgeable, so perhaps you should keep your mouth shut.
4810510
29 Aug 17 #60
@SlightlyFoxed you said there was only a problem when the machines were 'seriously neglected' which is either an ill-informed opinion or absolute nonsense. Whilst I'm sure you're not one of those service engineers who appear on Watchdog you clearly are the type who blame consumers. Hotpoint have a terrible attitude to consumer safety and that isnt up for debate.
SlightlyFoxed
31 Aug 17 #61
Hmm "isn't up for debate" and ad hominem attacks.

It's funny, every time I hear that kind of crap, it's usually an attempt to defend a weak argument. Right up there with "End of!" and "Period!"

Good day.
4810510
31 Aug 17 #62
Let's be honest you have a vested interested in people buying rubbish appliances that require servicing. You offer no substantive information, you just offer personal insults. You try to peddle this rubbish that Hotpoint machines it's just the customers seriously neglect them. Of course that's completely false and is a contradiction of the evidence. Hotpoint aren't sending letters to people saying please don't neglect your machine - they are sending engineers to modify them.

Your point about Grenfell supposes that you know facts when you very clearly don't.
