What an odd statement. Google not primarily a hardware company? It seems to be their main focus for the past few years.

Also the pixel isn't a showcase phone, it was marketed as iPhone competitor.

The surface anaology is moot, as the OS is pretty much clean or cleanable no matter who makes the laptop.

If what you say about Google being happy no matter what a s other manufacturers use Android is true, which I don't believe, it's not a great business strategy long term. Success pinned to the popularity of another brand who could use that to produce an OS of their own.

Ultimately I am not interested in companys desires, I am interested in my own as a consumer. I won't be told what I should have, I will define that based on my needs. Not a sheep to any manufacturer, OS or device. Will be interesting to see price points of the new pixels, with some reports of multiple devices. Who knows.

Sounds like Google's choice irritates you. My point was not 'odd' as I rationalised it sensibly, and if you think Google's primary focus of late has been hardware then you honestly need to do more research - Google has always treated hardware as an experiment. In fact, look at Google Glass - pure experiment that they never even bothered to push as a commercial product. All of Google's hardware is designed and sold primarily to push the software. Google makes its money from the number of Android sales alone, and it's better to fight against the premium (low volume high profit) sector than to fight the high volume low profit sector, because Google wants service users more than it wants phone sales.

I think I'm done with this now though but it was nice talking to you. Don't expect a cheap Pixel this year though as it won't happen. Just buy a Nokia
shareef
10 Aug 17 #40
...to provide customers what they want obviously. No other manufacturer makes a vanilla android. There is a real demand for it.
misterleoni to shareef
10 Aug 17 #41
The real demand is what will lead people to buy the Pixel.
shareef to misterleoni
10 Aug 17 #42
Well no, as I didn't buy one and by the sales figures, nor did most people.
misterleoni to shareef
12 Aug 17 #45
Google knows you will buy a different phone and use their services anyway, so they'll make their money regardless. The Pixel doesn't need to sell well as its main purpose isn't to sell well: Google has a unique place in the market whereby they make money no matter who makes their phones. In the present climate it's quite feasible that if they entered the low or mid range market it could lead to those manufacturers losing buyers and even exiting the market altogether - and Google makes money from these sales. Making too many SKUs per years also makes it more of a pain to roll out updates in a timely manner. Google is not primarily a hardware company...also how many people moan at Microsoft for making their Surface products primarily premium - focused? They made a cheap(er) Surface a while back but quickly gave up on it.

The solution really is to just like it or lump it

I agree with everything you've said.

Obvs not nice pricing but completely understandable. Will most likly buy a pixel once my Nexus 6 dies. Hope it never does lol.

too little, too late I feel.

was a huge nexus fan. Iterations past nexus 5 have just become progressively more expensive. Really wanted this handset 2 months ago but could not justify spending £750. Spent £475 (bad enough) on a Huawei mate 9 pro 128gb and been flying.

Are Google happy with their current pricing model, I know I'm not.
misterleoni to shareef
10 Aug 17 #28
Not true. The Nexus 4 and 5 were the only really cheap ones and that was because LG produced them for a heavily subsidised price to get themselves a better reputation in the Android space. The three iterations before it were expensive - for example my Nexus S 16GB in 2010 cost £549 (which is only £50 less than the 32GB Pixel) and the Galaxy Nexus after that was the same price, if not more. The first Nexus had to be imported from the US - and I happily did this as I loved the idea of stock Android with fast updates.

There have only been two really cheap Nexus devices out of 8 - though the LG made Nexus 5X was also fairly cheap.

People tend to have selective memories about Nexus pricing but I’ve been buying them since the very first device and I think the Nexus 4 was a very poor device. The Nexus 5 wasn’t much better in my opinion. I prefer paying premium prices for things if I know they’re going to raise the game and the Pixel is the first Google device that someone could say has the best smartphone camera (without everyone laughing). It’s a nice device, and I’m glad the days of cost-cutting Google devices is over - there are plenty of cheap options on the market now, where there wasn’t much in the cheap end of the market that wasn’t completely useless when the Nexus 4 came out. Google had their reasons to make the Nexus 4 and 5 at the time, and that reason doesn’t exist anymore thanks to Motorola and the like.
shareef to misterleoni
10 Aug 17 #30
Interesting but I disagree. I do not think that the time is over for Nexus. Their devices were not market leaders but provided a decent hardware configuration with a very clean OS. That is what I want. I do not wish to spend £750 on a device which may not be well supported in a couple of years time. By all means produce a market leading device for the people who wish to spend that much money. However there is still a very strong market, perhaps bigger market in flagships around the £450 price point. Why do you think the Oneplus does so well? I would have preferred Nexus continue that market with their bloat free OS and updates.
misterleoni to shareef
10 Aug 17 #33
Google has no need to produce a device that is mindful of budget. There is literally no reason for them to do it, for exactly the reason highlighted: that Oneplus etc now fill that gap.

Google doesn’t need to worry about massive volume sales on these devices - the Pixel brand has always been about the premium Google experience, right back to the original Google Pixel Chromebook a few years back. You can argue till you’re blue in the face about whether or not the Pixel is as good as an S8 or a G6 but in the end it doesn’t matter: Google wants stock Google to be the ultimate Google; it doesn’t want to compete with Oneplus in the mid-tier or Lenovo in the lower-tier; it doesn’t want people to think ‘oh look how much of a bargain basement brand Google is’. They don’t give a hoot about making people scurry off happily with a £200 Pixel - other manufactures do that, and do it well - something that simply wasn’t the case when the Nexus 4 launched. The Nexus 4 and 5 fixed that hole, made other manufacturers up their game in the budget sector. No need to do it now.

It’s all a branding exercise, and you can buy it or you can not buy it - whichever you do, it won’t make them produce cheap products anymore. If they bow out of producing their own premium devices they will bow out of the entire sector in my opinion.

So people can dream happy dreams about those two cheap Nexus devices of yore but thems days is over now, guys.
barmrest to misterleoni
10 Aug 17 #34
Oneplus don't do stock Google though, nor do Lenovo, that's the main point here. I'm pretty sure Motorola are your best bet if you want something budget and almost stock, most of their phones are decent value imo, you will end up paying a bit more than you would with some of these Chinese phones, but the build quality is a bit better and the close-to-stock experience is something people clearly value.
misterleoni to barmrest
10 Aug 17 #37
Desire for close to stock is exactly what makes the Pixel a desirable phone. If they did a mid tier or budget device it would take away from some of that lustre. Google are never going to compete with Samsung when it comes to manufacturing prowess but they evidently want to keep the Pixel line as the best that Google can do. There’s never been a cheap Pixel product since the introduction of the Chromebook Pixel.
shareef to misterleoni
10 Aug 17 #35
Disagree again.
Why do you assume they only need to produce one product line? As mentioned already, the other manufacturers, no matter how slim the OS is not vanilla android. These products are attempts and draw market from those consumers who want this. No one is referring to a "£200" scruffy device.

Also, the trend of manufacturers is to provide a device which is also more palatable cost wise. Apple, who were very much the leaders of expensive tech have introduced cheaper alternatives. Its what the market wants.

You are right when you say Google dont need to do anything... but who HAS to do anything? Pixel sales numbers are not amazing at all. Depends on what Google want I imagine. A great handset that only a handful of people use? Or a line or products that will bring more people to Android and a solid range of products.
misterleoni to shareef
10 Aug 17 #36
Again, Google don’t need to do the same as other manufacturers. Why try and compete with the manufacturers who are already making cheap - excellent - devices. Google isn’t a typical handset manufacturer - they make Android; they make a premium device to show it off. They aren’t in it just to fill as many niches as possible. Apple doesn’t have other manufacturers making cheaper versions of the same product that run iOS so they have had to make a cheaper (albeit not *cheap* ) handset.

The Pixel brand says all it needs to - it is, and always was, about premium hardware to run Android at its best. I stand by my opinion that there is no need for them to make different price tiers for their devices because as far as consumer foothold goes the other manufacturers are already doing the legwork for them, so they just need to concern themselves with making one flagship device to demo the platform at its purest.

I don’t work for Google so this is just my opinion but I don’t honestly see what the problem is - want the latest stock Android device? Buy a Pixel. It’s simple. If you don’t think it’s worth it then you will buy something else.
shareef to misterleoni
10 Aug 17 #38
What you say makes no sense.

There is absolutely no reason to not want Google to have a broader range.
misterleoni to shareef
10 Aug 17 #39
If you read my sentence there is. Explain why a company like Google with hundreds of manufacturers paying them licensing fees needs to make anything other than a flagship device to show off the best of stock Android. I think you’re just caught up in the fact that you want a cheap stock Android device and aren’t looking at the bigger picture. Just my opinion though and as I’ve already stated others may disagree.

Shame its OOS now. Brilliant device, might have been tempted to bite for the bigger battery as I have the small Pixel but then again, its still a long of wonga for a 32GB phablet. I can just about manage with the smaller Pixel. Nobody has it in the blue colour either aside from EE which really vexes me especially when they lock all their devices.

misterleoni has it about right. I would've liked your comment if you hadn't committed blasphemy in criticising the Nexus 4. I think one of the main reasons Google ditched the Nexus brand is because of this false idea people got about it being a budget brand. Only the Nexus 4 and 5 count, 5X was clearly a mid-range budget phone so can't be compared. I do think the Pixel phones could stand to be a bit cheaper but the price is not absurd. I'll most likely be getting the XL 2 on contract on release.
