The phone is unlocked SIM wise. So it'll work with any UK network.

Requesting the unlock code for the bootloader is so you can load a custom ROM on it. If you don't want to do that that's cool, this phone doesn't need it per se.

If you receive a open box, or not shrink wrapped, maybe check it hasn't had a non official miui ROM on it. Some sellers do this and it has spyware on it.

You can normally tell with the version number. Google official miui versions and check before you do anything else.

If you have a shrink wrapped phone no worries needed.

You only need to unlock your bootloader if you want to risk loading custom ROMs to your phone.

The vast majority of people won't want to do that, and shouldn't do this.

Heya!

I've created an account but I have no idea how to request for a SMS pin. And sorry this might be a really dumb question but isn't the phone unlocked anyway?

I'm so lost on all this tech stuff. How do I even load the bootloader?
Snuffpig
23 Sep 17 #128
Go to en.miui.com/unl…ck/ to sign up and request permission to unlock. You might have to go through a china VPN to authorise your SMS PIN (look for the app Monkeyfanfan from Google Play to do that).

Once your bootloader is unlocked you need to install TWRP and Super SU. Find guides in this forum:forum.xda-developers.com/red…e-4

Good luck!

Have received this phone, unlocked the bootloader, installed Lineage OS 14.1 and it's absolutely magic! The fingerprint reader is a game changer!

At this price point I could change phone every year for less than £10 a month.

Mine turned up 3 days ago, no custom charges and they had item price as $10 on mine, had my redmi note 4 case here but it is the wrong one, gonna use it till my new cover comes, there has been an update waiting to be downloaded since I got it but I'm not gonna update it yet as I read somewhere that the update messes up the gps, @sinjin_smythe can you let me know if the update has any problems like battery drain etc, as i updated my redmi note 3 a while back and it had battery drain that's why I bought this phone.

Got mine today, no customs charges here either, envelope marked at 20$ value and as a gift. Currently loading on the firmware upgrade from the miui site, I believe this fixes some issues with the phone heating up. Currently have a redmi 3 phone which has been brilliant. Bargain, thanks OP!

Mine got delivered today when I had just left home for a short time. Delivered by Royal Mail. Luckily a neighbour took it on my behalf and saved me a trip to the post office.

Still waiting for the case to be delivered which was ordered at the same time as the mobile.

Now to set it up.

Hmmm mine was left outside my front door as well & I was in all day too so not sure who actually delivered it but that's not a particularly good policy. Glad about the lack of customs charges, lots of comments from people on here seemed to suggest it was almost certain.

11 Sep 17 #120
This is the option I went for. Think the delivery driver opened up the package and stole the phone. The bag was sellotaped back together and the package was left in my front porch. I was in the house all day so and normally delivery drivers knock the door, i went to leave the house 5pm and found my package on the floor.

Have got in touch with Alice now, hopefully she can get me a replacement.

My wife's phone just arrived, paid extra £1 for faster British Post. It was sent by One World Express in London & was sealed, & no customs charge. On charge now so no problems here (yet). I was half expecting it to not turn up or there be something wrong with it so unexpectedly pleased right now. Shame others were less lucky.

Mine arrived in the UK and 2 days later, I had it in my mucky little paws!! From the time it was picked up by the carrier, to me receiving it, it took 7 days.

Timeline:

3 days from it leaving the supplier to leaving the country
2 days from it leaving China to arriving in the UK
2 days from it arriving in the UK to being delivered to me

Pretty impressive.

Had ordered the mobile on the 28th Aug. Just checked my GB account delivery tracking and noted that the mobile had arrived at Heathrow Worldwide DC on 07.09.2017.

Q1 How long does it take to clear customs
Q2 And how long for it to be delivered.
Thanks

Expected it here in approx 2 weeks and we are getting close to that

This thread is not about the 4GB 64GB version, it is about the 3GB 32GB version.
BUCKUM2
5 Sep 17 #107
I think its your logic is out firstly the 4GB 64GB version of the redmi note 4 is currently over £150 so vaderag is right it is about £40 dearer but you get dual 12Mpx camera with 2x optical zoom with HDR, corning gorilla glass screen and last but not least pure stock android with full google support. It amazes me that when you get a phone with pure android and full google support some people still want to root and flash, i can understand the 10% genuine geeks who like to tinker about but the other 90% just flash without really understanding anything about it. I myself am a miui fan because of the extras you get but each to their own i suppose
vaderag
5 Sep 17 #106
Negative captain - this phone is 3GB 32GB - i was comparing to the "equivalent" which is the larger model of this one... (hence that word there...)

It's pure android - i don't need some half ass support when google are supporting fully
BUCKUM2
5 Sep 17 #105
Yes but this comes with pure android so why would you want to root and flash another rom
Snuffpig
5 Sep 17 #104
Your logic is out. Firstly, the article says the new phone might retail for £181, this phone is £113.51, so that's an additional £67.49 not £40! That's a 60% price increase so clearly this not the same class of phone or price point! It would be fair if you said you're looking for a higher spec phone at a higher price point. But this isn't at the same price point so it's not a reasonable comparison.

Secondly it's 2 weeks to the the Indian release date, but who knows how many weeks/months it will really take for versions to be available for international shipping.

Thirdly, the Note 4 has a huge userbase for Lineage OS installations (stats.lineageos.org/ look for the MIDO build), which means it's very well supported for people like me rooting and putting their own firmware on. The new phone will have 0 installations and will take 6 months+ to be picked up. That might not be relevant for you personally, but the installation stats show it is relevant for others.

Cheapest on AliExpress (for the black one) at the moment = $179.99/£141.14. But if you go through TCB/Quidco, you can get around £7-£8 back on that, making it £133 delivered. You just have to keep checking daily on AliExpress - they do these flash discounts regularly, which is how I got mine for £130 delivered (after TCB). Great phone and I'm glad I got the 64Gb version, for less than £20 more.

You will be thoroughly disappointing - at the price you paid for the M8 (if bought new as I did £280 Halloween sale) and wonder why your Mi costs considerably less and has exactly the same build quality and feel plus the paint doesnt chip and scratch despite my M8 being in a case and looked after, you will not go back trust me, the only thing you will miss is the front speakers on the M8 which were awesome but none of the premium phones even have that.

Don't get those coloured border ones, they are rubbish and dust gets trapped in them within a week if you carry your phone in your pockets.

Stick with the smaller tempered glass protector and live with the halo effect (hardly noticeable after a week, you get used to it). Or get a flexible plastic screen protector wrap which will cover the whole face.

Chinese Note 4 is Mediatek. Note 4 Global Version and Note 4X are Snapdragon. The housing was updated when going from Mediatek to Snapdragon. This Note 4 Global Version would share the same housing as Note 4X. Looking for "Note 4" accessories will almost all be for the original Mediatek housing whereas Note 4X = Snapdragon fitment, which is why you should look for Note 4X instead. Some listings< will specify both Note 4 Global Version and Note 4X.
dreadzone101
28 Aug 17 #59
The first Gearbest listing I came across which will fit: gearbest.com/scr…tml However, the thing with screen protectors for this phone is that due to the 2.5d curved edge, clear screen protectors won't cover the entire front face otherwise you'll get screen protector 'halo' effect. Therefore a lot of them will look more like this<. To avoid that, you could get ones with a coloured border like this: gearbest.com/scr…tml

so you use your non-contactless credit card for every purchase, including when popping down to the corner shop for a 50p loaf of bread? get real. the large majority of people use contactless cards nowadays, which require no authentication for transactions up to £30 (with plans to raise this to £50). if lost/stolen, anyone could easily use your card for multiple transactions of up to £30/£50 before reported lost and blocked.

with android pay etc, a layer of security (biometric, pin, etc) lessens the chance of this from happening. even if you don't actually lose your contactless card, there are many ways in which rfid skimmers operate to take money out of contactless cards.

I didn't face any problems with GPS but I disliked like the battery drain on standby and a few other things on the 8.5.4 global final.
You can install developers ROM (global edition, currently 7.8.24 which is actually newer than 8.5.4) without the need of the bootloader being unlocked, a much better ROM and a proper android 7.0.

I was using Xiaomitool by Franceso Tescari from this web en.miui.com/thr…tml and the installation of the developer ROM was a breeze

with zero security? android pay's security combined with convenience is what is so great about it. i currently almost never take my wallet when i go out, just my phone. i can travel and shop with just a wave of my phone, while staying secure.

once you try android pay, it's very difficult to go back to cards/cash/wallets.

Those prices are usually only for white/gold option though. AliExpress listings tend to have a price range with multiple options and selecting black or grey will increase the price compared to what is shown in your screenshot. It's something that was mentioned in the first few comments. So this Gearbest deal would be the cheapest for black, whereas AliExpress would be slightly cheaper if you didn't mind white/gold colour.

Brilliant phone, I have one, but watch out for the Nougat update to Miui version 8.5.4.0. There's a confirmed bug which means many people (me included!) are no longer able to get a GPS location fix 90% of the time. Be sure what you are getting, the 4x is an phone built for the Asian market, the seller downloads the global rom to the phone before dispatch, therefore the phone will have been opened. The Note 4 has the global rom factory installed, therefore a sealed box. I think there are other differences too, have a look at previous note 4 deals more knowable people explain the difference.
I got a gold note 4 in July, £113, it took 3 weeks to arrive, it is very good, no problems. I have ordered another for the wife, no gold left so got grey for £122. Yet to arrive.

dreadzone101 to ansonuk
28 Aug 17 #40

@raf35y1 is probably referring to NOTE 4X's differences compared to Note 4 Global Version, whereas @ansonuk is talking about the smaller Redmi 4X.

Redmi NOTE 4X = Non B20 China equivalent of RN4 Global Version. Redmi 4X on the other hand is called Redmi 4X for both Global Version and China Version, so a Global Version Redmi 4X = B20 sealed with Global ROM, whereas Redmi NOTE 4X indicates China Version therefore no B20 and will be unboxed with Global ROM installed by seller.

How easy is it to take the phone out of the case? I like to be able to take my phone out of the case when I know I'm (probably) not going to drop it, at home etc.

I got one called nillkin (sparkle) in black. Really well made. BUT, make sure you get the right one for this model. You may have to do some research. Btw, it's not really sparkly, at least in black.

Did not have any code to use at Aliexpress - fantacy. There is a sale but it seems no discount on black - standard price.
