I'm looking at buying a guitar for a 6 year old. Can anyone advise me which is best between acoustic and electric? Obviously would need to be a child's sized one, but not overly heavy. I also don't want to spend a fortune as she is only 6 & tends to break things but happy to spend £60 to £70. She likes the electric ones but they seem rather heavy. Any thoughts?

I'd want to check it out before giving one to an aspiring young guitarist. At this price it's hard to imagine there isn't a lot of lemons out there. I'd never even heard of Linden or Catalpa in relation to a guitar. These could be crap and off putting to a potential future musical genius like.. Liam Gallagher.

Cheap guitars are much better than they used to be. But even expensive ones played by musicians take a bit of work to get them precisely how they like them.

Fixing the action on this style of guitar would usually involve some filing or replacement of bridge piece, but the reason they often come set high is because of inconsistencies in neck straightness and evenness of the levels of the frets.

I've found that the cheap guitars, as an introduction to the type of music that these guitars are suited to are not too bad these days. And this type of guitar is a Spanish/Classical styles with nylon EBG. A very different animal from a steel stringed acoustic - so some kids might be frustrated if they want to rock out. But the classical style is often taught in schools.

Tuning stability, down to the rigidity of the guitar, quality of the tuners and the strings. The latter easy to replace. But, tuning a guitar and training the ear is a very useful skill so it's a good thing if a student is required to do it a bit more often.

It was suggested to me an easy to play ie nylon string guitar is helpful.

You must always look at an instrument before buying it some of them are unplayable. I have seen instruments that are 1000,s of pounds and are unplayable. You need to check that the neck is straight that is crucial if it is not it is unplayable. Each guitar will have its own sound even ones that come off factory production lines in their millions.

There are also £200 plus guitars that are hard to play and may be useful to put you off trying.

Also dont cheap guitars tend to have the strings too far away from the fretboard, making playing difficult?

I think a 6 year old might struggle with this. It's a full size guitar.

Since these are for 6Years+ and at that price then I think these are for children to just have a play around on.

I wouldn't bother with these. It will put you off learning. They don't stay in tune and don't sound that great. If you are serious about learning pay more for a Yamaha etc.

Does anyone know how this is this going to compare to the £20 argos one?
