My wife is a Coeliac and has been tempted to join Coeliac UK, but they charge £24 a year. I was looking for places to eat on an upcoming trip and found Coeliac sanctuary where you can search for free

You're very welcome
I'm sorry, though, I only eat fish, rice, & vegetables (due to my own gluten/lactose intolerances, & my personal/life-choice of Pescetarianism), & regularly eat the same selection of dishes from a local Chinese Restaurant/Take-away.
However, given that some supermarkets sell gluten-free sweet'n'sour sauce, & other Anglicised? variants of Chinese meals, I expect you could probably find a restaurant that could prepare such a dish in the same manner.
Perhaps you could contact those establishments (above, & any more you can find locally via TripAdvisor) that advertise gluten-free dishes, & ask what they can offer.
Good luck!

Thanks very much fanpages.
To be honest we've stopped even attempting Chinese as their dishes are usually mostly deep fried or contain soya sauce so my wife is yet again left with a variation of a plate of boiled fish and vegetables which is a plate of stir fried fish and vegetables.
Do those restaurants offer something more exotic than a stir fry?

Searched by post code got Sorry, we can't find what you're looking for!
Found Basildon and said there was 3 places in Basildon but one was Canvey island which is about 8 to 10 miles away for Basildon not very good if you only get buses because i don't drive.

This problem has been fixed we were getting it too, problem with Google but now sorted. I'll have a look at the Canvey Island one see it it will be better listing under somewhere else other than Basildon, when added it must have suggested Basildon as the nearest major town.

Completely agree with you - if you're using TripAdvisor and don't want to be stuck with a plate of boiled fish and vegetables (like my wife has been many times before) it's best to phone ahead. If the restaurant has no idea what you're talking about straight off the bat it's best to avoid.

Definitely always best to check, my worst nightmare is being stuck with one option and the staff not understanding that gluten can make you very ill. I hate having no choice.

Thanks for posting. I am the owner of Coeliac Sanctuary. We have been going now for 3 years.
We aren't trying to replace Coeliac UK, they are a charity and I agree you should pay if you can, they can offer much more than I can, I am basically a one man band, so yes join, even I am a member.
As for TripAdvisor, yes you get filters now, when Coeliac Sanctuary was started they didn't have gluten free filters, that was relatively new. I do double check places do gluten free and having looked though trip advisor myself many times as a Coeliac I know a lot of places that say gluten free but do not cater for Coeliacs, some even didn't do gluten free at all, I remember talking to one who said on Trip Advisor that they did gluten free to be greeted with "what's gluten", a very reassuring start.
Our where to eat guide is made up by fellow Coeliacs suggesting places to eat out plus my own experiences, Coeliac UK do check all there's more thoroughly than me, but from personal experience I know it includes more nationwide chain restaurants than independent outlets, our guide highlights the independent eateries but we do rely on Coeliacs or the eateries conveying the information.
We do have a variety of other things on the site from recipes to now selling travel cards and wristbands to help aid Coeliacs when abroad or just generally eating out. However I do thoroughly recommend you join Coeliac UK, it is beneficial.

Nice idea but it's reinventing the wheel - TripAdvisor has a Dietary Restrictions filter that covers Gluten Free Options and, obviously, comes with restaurant reviews.
In Kent for example TripAdvisor has 836 restaurants with Gluten Free Options listed vs this sites 20...
My wife was diagnosed with Coeliac disease a few years ago and generally anywhere but Chinese restaurants cater for her without too much of an issue.

Are you struggling to find Kent-based Chinese Restaurants that offer Gluten-Free options, or just struggling with them once you arrive?
Here are two that I am aware of (that obviously may not be that suitable depending on your location in Kent)...
It's frustrating that they want to charge people for this information anyway. It's not like people have made an active lifestyle choice to become a Coeliac, like a Vegetarian...and yet everywhere advertises Vegetarian meals as some kind of bonus for eating there.
Heat just out of principle, I have a few friends who would greatly appreciate this.

Great, heat added, can't help thinking it will be mainly downloaded by people who need a gluten free diet because they felt a bit I'll after eating 43 sandwiches at a buffet though!

Great site (voted hot) but I would just like to say that Coeliac UK is a charity and they do an awful lot to make the lives of people with Coeliac disease easier. If you are Coeliac and you can afford it I really think you should join. If it wasn't for their efforts we wouldn't have the current proliferation of gluten free offerings in restaurants.
