From what I recall this used to cost something like £1.50 for a reminder text. I see now that you can register online and get a free reminder email. This should come in handy to those who forget like myself as I've done this in the past!

Yes you can put reminders in your phone/email/work calendar etc but things happen throughout the year and you may change a phone/work etc whereas if you've got a permanent email then this is another reminder method. It's always better to be safe than sorry especially with something like this.

All you need is the registration of your car and your email address (you will need to confirm the email they send you after registering).

You’ll then get an reminder email a month before your MOT is due and again 2 weeks later if you don’t have your MOT yet.

The Check MOT Service that is linked on the right (LINK) is also very good for checking out the history of a car you are thinking of buying. I've used it in the past and it's good to see the reaction of the owner when you ask them questions about stuff that was an advisory on the last (or previous MOT)

Thanks for this @MackemLad (haway the lads!). Really useful for me, but it also informed me that the MOT on the 20 year old car I just bought actually runs about 2 months longer than I thought it did. Result!

A friend of mine has been driving the length and breadth of the UK since March without and MOT. His car is a 14 reg due its first MOT on the 1st of March this year. He argues that no one has told him to take an MOT test. I have corrected him but he has chosen to ignore my advice and carries on using the car. Isn't it amazing that the police do not stop cars without MOT routinely. If the car was not taxed or not insured they would. I googled this and for not having an MOT you would probably get away with a warning. The law does not seem to worry as much for not having a current MOT.

Me too for being 6 weeks past my MOT.... flagged up on the police ANPR system when I drove past them
MackemLad to Ralph888
30 Aug 17 #15
Yes you may get a fine (up to £1000) but is he really that stupid or is he trying to save a few quid and will 'play dumb' if pulled over? For starters there's ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) that the Police use commonly so he will no doubt get caught eventually given his mileage.

Regardless of that does he realise that if he is in accident that his insurance claim may not be as simple either depending on the wording of his policy. It may say that the car needs to be in a roadworthy condition and this probably means having a valid MOT. Yes a car can pass the MOT and as soon as you drive away it could then be unroadworthy 100 metres down the road (yet the MOT is still a year) but even so it's not worth the risk!
Ralph888 to MackemLad
30 Aug 17 #46
My thoughts entirely, just call him stupid and ignorant, despite his professional status and University education it beggar's belief the way he is acting! He's wealthy so would pay and keep quiet about it if anything happened.
cowsmoooo to Ralph888
30 Aug 17 #16
He may as well have no insurance than either.
fireman1 to cowsmoooo
30 Aug 17 #21
And he probably would have saved 5 grand by the time he was stopped and fined 200 quid.
MackemLad to fireman1
30 Aug 17 #24
Or he could end up losing £1,000's if his insurance doesn't cover all costs in the event of an accident.
masekwm to cowsmoooo
30 Aug 17 #30
Why's that then? No MOT doesn't mean no insurance
Lonyo to masekwm
30 Aug 17 #35
The insurer might tell him to take a hike if he tries to make a claim. He may have insurance, but it could be worthless if they require an MOT for cover to be valid. If it isn't they might not pay him anything.

The ANPR will kick in one year after I think, there's a pretty big grace period. Since it doesn't flag up as expired it pretty much won't flag up it will just show as unrecorded. Personally the biggest problem is that his insurance is invalid without it.

It varies with the Police, one of the previous years I was 2 days overdue and a police who happened to tail me pulled me over £60, it flags on their screen automatically.
Babbler to Ralph888
30 Aug 17 #37
I didn't think you could tax a car without an mot
Ralph888 to Babbler
30 Aug 17 #45
You're correct, he purchased the car beginning of January and got 12 m tax before the Mot was due. Car was registered 1st March 2014 hence the need to MOT it. It just amazes me he hasn't been stopped. He's travelled 10,000 miles since March all over the country, seems as though this isn't checked by the ANPS on gantries and Police cars. Crazy system.
Helgrr to Babbler
31 Aug 17 #117
You can't but you can tax for next year upt to 28 days in advance and then let your MOT run out, if you are an idiot
SmashDealer to Ralph888
30 Aug 17 #49
Try to reason with him that it's not for his own safety, it's for everyones. Like the restrictions on Drink Driving.

If his car tires burst, he spins off and takes out a family SUV. It's not just his own life he's risking, It's potentially a bunch of people a lot more innocent and worthy of life. Maybe a couple little kids, a wife, a hard working dad.

Also he could die too, if he cares, but some people just don't understand the dangers they're causing to others too I think.

It's not smart to avoid the MOT, because it exists for a reason, it's just, thoughtless. And if the dangers to others are understood, then selfish too.

Ralph888 to parabolica
31 Aug 17 #77
In Birmingham you see slot of cars without number plates, if they are followed they just floor it and run, Police don't give chase as pursuit in built up areas is to dangerous. Crazy world.
dineshonline to Ralph888
31 Aug 17 #87
Your friend could have saved the insurance money too, because he is essentially driving uninsured. Insurers/Police only check these when there has been an incident. Imagine a 3rd party claim of 1M £, how will he pay that or the legal fees?

policyexpert.co.uk/ins…ot/

The bottom line is that if your MOT is out of date and you’re involved in a crash, in nearly all cases your insurer will declare your cover to be invalid, no matter how much you’ve paid for it.

ukscoob1 to Ralph888
31 Aug 17 #88
For the sake of £30-£40 he's invalidated his car insurance. Good one.
Jackmaster to Ralph888
31 Aug 17 #97
Sensible post. Of course with ANPR they could do this. And if the car doesn't have a valid MOT then nothing else will be valid.

Problem is, as has been clearly portrayed on here, most people "get away with it", and even if they maim or kill someone whilst driving illegally, the penalties are absolutely minimal.

Sadly I know of people who have not had a licence and therefore any other legal requirement like insurance, tax, MOT, have been off their heads, killed numerous people and have walked away with a "community order" and 3 year driving ban.

It's a blooody JOKE!!!
othen to Jackmaster
31 Aug 17 #104
... are you sure that they have killed numerous people whilst driving and still only got a driving ban? That sounds (to me) a bit implausible as there would be an issue of manslaughter, particularly if by 'off their heads' you mean drunk or having taken drugs.

s24adm to Ralph888
1 Sep 17 #121
Any passing police car with ANPR system will flag him up instantly - I had an instance about 6 years ago, I got one of my motors MOT'd on a Tuesday and drove it to work on the Wednesday morning. Halfway to work, a police car flew up behind me, lights on. Apparently my car showed as "no mot" as it sometimes takes up to 48hours for their database to update - a quick flash of the MOT doc which was thankfully still IN the car and I was on my merry way.

So the police definitely DO bother about expired MOTs.

MackemLad to ahenners
30 Aug 17 #18
Not that I've seen but if you do it online and pay via Direct Debit then it does automatically renew so there's no messing about come tax renewal time. I just pay mine monthly via Direct Debit and this is what it said at the end of my last email when I taxed a vehicle in June this year.

Your vehicle tax will automatically renew unless you notify us of any changes. We will send a new payment schedule at the time of renewal.

You'd be surprised just how many people can't or don't do this! If you set up a calendar reminder on a PC/Laptop/phone etc then you may end up changing that device over the year and may forget or not be able transfer the calendar to a new device (if replaced at all). Even this email option isn't fail safe but it's another option
ahenners to MackemLad

Time flies, and all that sh*t. I'm pretty good with keeping up on things but this post made me realise my MOT is pretty-much out of date.

Insurance = Reminder (notification from insurance company)
Road Tax (Excise, whatever you wanna call it) = Reminder (with a good period of notice)
MOT = Nothing

Good for you if you are so organised, I'm happy for you. For those of us who enjoy a gentle (free) reminder every now an again, I'd say this is great.

If you don't need any help with reminders for bills, give your gas, electricity, water and mortgage provider a shout that they can rest easy with the letters and all that jazz.....you got it all in hand.

I was always amazed at non mechanic types stating "modern cars these days don't need serviced like the old ones" and then they convince themselves it'll be ok ... months later the cars needing a serious repair or its had it and all because they never bothered getting the annual service done and all because they want to save a few quid....

Do think its partly correct if do the oil and filter and change cam belt when needed the engine will be ok
Dont need any tuning or adjustments like old cars did just leave well alone as long as MIL light out
Yes brakes suspension need checking for safety
Servicing has always been bit of a money earner for car dealers
I am not non mechanic type either (time served mechanic ) not worked as mechanic for long time though(wages crap )

A bloke in my road has a renault van and the mot and tax ran out march 2016!!! He drives it daily and goes past a ANPR camera near our town . How does he get away with it? No thanks, it's quite ok where it is actually, and it doesn't beg any questions really. If (and I said if) the facts are as stated, then that guy, and every other idiot who thinks it clever not to have an MOT, are morons that are potentially lethal on the road, FACT.

Obviously if you have a legitimate MOT then you need to contact them but it does say give them 5 days in the link below the MOT status result.

Incorrect MOT status?
If the MOT status is incorrect it can take up to 5 days for your status to update.
If the MOT status is still incorrect after 5 days contact DVSA

31 Aug 17 #84
Yes you are correct if you mean an email reminder option for MOT isn't new as there's been 3rd party providers that have offered this. The GOV website is the new service that's just been opened up very recently.

mattersoftesting.blog.gov.uk/wer…ce/

If you look at the top when you click the link you will see this

BETA This is a new service – your feedback will help us to improve it.

Even if there are other ways as there are many , if not millions of people who miss their MOT test dates for one reason or another. This article on Kwik-Fit is rehashing data (and sensationalising it given technology back then restricting reminder options) from way back in 2009. You'd like to think many of those are now using a reminder method in one way or another.

kwik-fit.com/pre…mot

This will help forgetful people or at least push them into creating a reminder that bests suits them. It's amazing that people still do knowingly drive with an MOT, tax, insurance or all 3 yet they do. Yes you may just get a fine for no MOT but you'd still have to declare the offence for insurance purposes for the next 5 years so will cost you even more in the long run.

I never get Road Tax reminder for some reason plus now that it's all gone online and no longer a paper disc, the onus is on the owner to ensure that they renew the road tax etc. The more reminders the better in my opinion plus post sometimes has a habit of going astray.
MackemLad to westernise
31 Aug 17 #94
If you pay for tax online via Direct Debit then you now get a tax reminder email. Plus you won't have to do anything as the reminder will tell you how much it will be over the next however long and just keep taking the money every month. So really you should never run out of tax unless your bank details change or the Direct Debit fails. Hopefully you will get some sort of warning message if this does happen. This is what it said at the end of my last email when I taxed a vehicle in June this year.

Your vehicle tax will automatically renew unless you notify us of any changes. We will send a new payment schedule at the time of renewal.

31 Aug 17 #112
No it's not a deal as it's a freebie and has been posted in the freebies :nerd:

As for the calendar thing, not everyone has that option or maybe they do they want to use that method. Given the fact that 100,000's of people (probably still millions) miss their MOT even though various reminder options have been around for many years then having another simple option for free is probably why it's been voted hot.

Another simple method would be to print a label and stick it on your windscreen internally, or buy/make one like this
