interesting.. I've got a lifetime sub to VPN unlimited but if this is a freebie it'll be a handy spare I suppose - even if it's a limited offer

#edit

just signed up with the code and validated email and everything seems fine

I'm not very clued up on the whole VPN thing so forgive dumb question: Would this mean I can watch catch up when I'm in Greece for example?
Zebedee2017 to pickledtink
19 Aug 17 #6
in principle... YES - you would simply connect from eg Greece using the pretend UK address.

however, BBC iPlayer is more fussy than most, and depending on how cunning/secure the VPN is, the iPlayer page might suss you out as connecting from non-UK, and not allow it.
pickledtink to Zebedee2017

Thanks. I was thinking more channel 4 and now tv really. Reading the faqs it seems to say you can only do the UK IP address through the router not the PC. I use a 3 data card in a mifi when I'm in Greece. Would this work?

The official Windscribe android app was released a few weeks ago and this does work with free accounts.
The old version required use of an Android openvpn app and a premium account.

Just signed up for this. I’ve wanted to try a VPN for a while and this seems like a good way to try.

fast.com tells me I’m losing. 24Mbit passing through the UK VPN on my iPad but we’ll see how it goes.

19 Aug 17 #23
I use Windscribe coming from Cyberghost and it (Windscribe) is brilliant. It works for torrents, no restrictions on sites and speed is so quick I basically don't notice (which as a compliment is about as good as it gets). Never had connection problems (unlike Cyberghost where they blamed me), they have Windows, Chrome, iOS and Android apps/extensions and most importantly you can sign in on any number of machines at once - Cyberghost made me sign out each time and if I forgot I couldn't use it.

As someone else said, iPlayer seems to block any VPN so you really need to leave a PC running and setup your own proxy or similar is all I can think of.

I'm using the Pro version courtesy of Humble Bundle. I will test apps on it if people ask (e.g. Channel 4, iPlayer, etc) so at least you know before jumping in.

Unless it has android, I doubt it. If it can run android apps? Maybe.

You could configure your router - but I did this and you cannot use the default ones from BT/Virgin but need a proper one and hack it with a custom firmware which is not an simple task. Best would be to buy a cheap android box and install on there?

i currently pay for a vpn for use with torrent downloads, i am not interested in anything that affects my browser etc. Is it possible to set this up so it only hides the ip of my torrent client and nothing else? I have a static ip with Sky and as i run a video server so can watch movies and my cctv from another property i don't want anything to interfere with that.
jameshothothot
19 Aug 17 #61
I pay for torguard. That takes over your whole internet on your device, though I recently discovered the 'lan bypass' feature on the app which allows me to screen mirror with it on devices whereas it didn't before (one device won't connect to torguard with this feature on)

You might just need to find a separate device for downloading and install it only on that? An old netbook like I do?

The fastest VPN I found so far - after trying some of the big ones - is AirVPN. If your computer CPU can handle 200mbit encrypted connection over OpenVPN, just try AirVPN's Netherland servers.

19 Aug 17 #64
Why is it "free"? Usually, if you're not paying for a product, you are the product, and a VPN that collects data defeats the object.
jameshothothot
19 Aug 17 #65
Free is normally 10gb / month and only 8 countries

pro is unlimited and more countries

so I guess it's to get you used to the idea and get you to upgrade?

but yeah maybe they are tracking - but who isn't?

hukd must be!

i use setupvpn great free lifetime vpn for streaming, doesn't restrict my speed and no bandwith limits. I use the chrome for windows browser one, gives me a choice of 17 different locations. No configuration required. All you need to do is download it, set up an account, choose your location from drop down menu and you are done.

20 Aug 17 #111
Yep, remember folks, if you're using this to download or stream pirate stuff, your IP address might be hidden from your ISP, but the company providing the VPN is most assuredly keeping a record of what you're doing.
worton
20 Aug 17 #112
I've heard from friends that having a VPN on your laptop does not really benefit when torrenting as you'll need it on your router? Ie, when youre on Vuza lets say and the torrent is downloading its not using your internet VPN anymore...
skydmarx
20 Aug 17 #113
Depends on the router, I think. I use an Asus and if you go into the settings and add the logon for your VPN, everything you connect via that router is protected by the VPN.
jameshothothot
20 Aug 17 #114
That doesn't seem right to me!

Internet -> Your ISP -> Your router -> Your devices (e.g. phone, tablet, laptop, desktop)

If you put a VPN on one of your devices - say laptop - then only its data will be encrypted.

The other devices will not be affected in anyway.

But ALL data sent from the laptop should be encrypted? That's the whole point of a VPN?

So I disagree with what your friends say...
Limitless.

Thanks that helped as far as ipleak.net is concerned: that leak has gone, but according to whoer.net I'm stil only 40% anonymous! 20 Aug 17 #123
A point well made. If you're using a VPN to conceal some form of illicit activity, the company behind the VPN has a VERY valuable database for all sorts of reasons. Imagine if it were hacked......or sold......
Zebedee2017
20 Aug 17 #124
fyi, i usually use CyberGhost!
i take onboard the slow performance comments, but i guess that largely depends on what you up to?
eg
- if using pirate pages, and BitTorrent/Bigly etc, then Windscribe does apparently have a decent level of security
- if trying to watch eg live footie streaming, then from exp. Windscribe *defo* not so good!!

hey ho... can't win 'em all?

Zebedee2017
20 Aug 17 #127
without getting too "techie" about it, a VPN is a means of pretending you're logging on from a different place/country.
in practice, that *may* include accessing eg Netflix from "the U.S." to see the latest episodes (i've NO idea if that still works???), or accessing sites such as eg Pirate Bay that are currently banned, and blocked in UK (and other).

The pricing page says you need to pay for openvpn configs, however on Arch Linux they seem to be in /etc/windscribe once you've connected with their cli utility once. I haven't done anything with them because using the cli utility works fine for what I need this for.

Quick update. Installed, only decent speed is with French where I was getting 40mbs down 12 mbps up.
Upgrade for 30 quid for the year and get access to 17 other countries.

Tempting but will try this for a few weeks first

Also check out NordVPN, they've got a 3 day free trial and offering $80 for two years which works out around £32 a year.

Anybody with a decent router running this?

I've got an old TPLINK TL-WDR3600 running DDWRT but when trying out IvacyVPN it basically killed my network speed and left the router in a bit of a tiss needing a reboot to stabilize it.

This could be the VPN Provider so was hesitant about using another one and have been on-call since so haven't had chance to try Windscribe.

Was thinking of dropping some cash on a RT-AC88U or possibly a RT-AC5300 as I have a lot more on my network then 5yr ago!

Anybody running 150+ speeds through any VPN on their router?

;edit; Scratch all that, looks like pfsense is the way to go for anything over 50mbs - restoreprivacy.com/vpn…rs/

Germany faster than France for me now.
jameshothothot
24 Aug 17 #161
I had a very old router and installed ddwrt on it and then torguard. It was very slow around 2mbs but on a pc I get.... 40mbs plus. So I presumed it was the encryption and the router couldn't handle it but never gone back to it to try lower or even zero encryption.

Have you tried changing your encryption?
jameshothothot
24 Aug 17 #162
It mentions raspberry pi router but has slow cpu. How easy is it to create a wifi hotspot in linux or windows and get that pc connected to a network via a vpn and therefore get it to share its vpn? I used to do lots of things like that with bt fon. I had unlimited access to bt fon but not all devices eg ps3 could access it so I used old pcs to just connect to bt fon and act as a hotspot.

I got the same wdr3600 with dd-wrt, and it does connect but at some point later it just drops off and won't reconnect itself unless you reboot it or disable vpn then re-enable. a bit of a hassle. i just gave up with it and configured my torrent client to use socks 5 instead.
IAmTheDude
26 Aug 17 #165
I find this using Windows 10 native VPN as well, didn't know if it was the VPN or windows doing it. Was looking into Powershell scripts to check and reconnect etc. Then put it on the router and was slow and did the same, symptoms were pages taking ages to load and then timing out. Speedtest was abysmal!

This was for Ivacy mind, I haven't had the chance to try Windscribe yet (on call work sucks when it relys on the internet!)
IAmTheDude
26 Aug 17 #166
The plan was to have the whole network fully encrypted with some advanced routing with iptables and dnsomatic for DDNS and remote access (RDP & VNC) as well as having downloads and browsing for all devices encrypted.

Doing some research I've found that for me on a 200 connection, having the entire network run through a separate PC running pfsense would probably only get me 50-60% of the speed.

May have to rethink how Im going to do this...
jameshothothot
26 Aug 17 #167
50pc of 200mb a very fast 100mb!
IAmTheDude
26 Aug 17 #168
Yeah but the cost of building a separate PC with the power decrypt it all real-time, the decent NIC cards to throw the data around, add in the decent WiFi card to handle the wireless side, configuring pfsense (not a simple task) and the time to get to that for only half over my speed.

Not as easy as and cost effective as using client based VPN but losing half the network protection!

If I went the powerful router way (top end ASUS) and a separate router running the VPN its still £300ish which I may as well throw into a separate PC.

Could also go to the commercial low end firewall/router route but still looking low end of £500.

Its all or nothing for me lol

Just got round to setting it up. Speedtest could barely read it, it managed DL at less than 2mbps but couldn't complete UL. I went to NordVPN for their 3 day trial to check it isn't me or BT and that's 35mbps and 8mbps.

Anyone any ideas. I like what I read about windscribe but those speeds are no good.
THanks

Indeed it does, so thanks.

Been very impressed with it, apart from it liking to turn itself on occasionally, it doesn't support Linux and I can't get it work with US Netflix as they can detect the proxy server. However, UK Netflix is way better than it use to be.

Anyone had success and good performance when installing it on a router?
